The Golden Globes is the most lively, attention-grabbing and just plain fun gala ceremony in Hollywood's awards merry-go-round -- primarily because it's the only one where alcohol is served.

Tinseltown's elite are allowed to kick back in relaxed seating with a glass of champagne -- or six -- and reflect on a year's achievements.

In a pre-gala interview, hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg told The Hollywood Reporter that the "looser atmosphere" was part of the fun.

Box office hit music romance "A Star Is Born" is the frontrunner going into<a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/golden-globes-2019-lady-gaga-green-book-and-a-star-is-born-dominate-the-nomination-list-182012"> Sunday's Golden Globes</a>, the first Hollywood awards gala of the year -- and usually the sassiest of them all.

Tinseltown's A-listers will strut down the red carpet for the first time this awards season at the Beverly Hilton, in the run-up to the all-important Oscars on February 24.

Hosting the gala -- which begins at 5:00 pm (0100 GMT Monday) -- will be actress Sandra Oh and comedian Andy Samberg. As the only awards show where booze is served, the evening is usually more colourful than showbiz's other big nights.

"It's going to be great. I think people are ready and could use a little smile," Samberg said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Even though Dick Cheney biopic "Vice" leads the film nominations with six, "Star" -- and its power duo of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper -- is the movie with the most buzz heading into Sunday night, and most critics predict it will take home the coveted best drama film honours.

"We're expecting "A Star Is Born" to take it down in the end, solidifying its Oscar frontrunner status," industry trade publication Variety said in its predictions.

"'A Star is Born' has everything going for it including box office and critical success," Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at industry data firm ComScore, told AFP.

But he cautioned that the Globes -- which are handed out by the 90-odd members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association -- are notoriously unpredictable.

"This year's nominees across the major categories are all incredibly deserving so anything could happen," Dergarabedian said.

This year, the Globes come at the start of voting for Oscar nominations, and while they are not always a clear predictor of Academy Award success, they are a bellwether of momentum.

If there is a sure bet on Sunday night, it is that Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma," a cinematic ode to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City, will win for best foreign film. He is also up for best director.

Competing against the Mexican filmmaker for that prize are Spike Lee ("BlacKkKlansman"), Peter Farrelly ("Green Book"), Adam McKay ("Vice") and Cooper, who made his debut behind the camera with "Star," directing himself.

For the experts polled by awards prediction website Gold Derby, "A Star Is Born" is a lock for best drama film, and Cuaron will take home top director honours.

They show their silly and fun side in the recently released promos for the awards show. There’s even some talk of "the elephant in the room.” We wonder what they are referring to, or who!

After Oh invites viewers to tune in to see if they discuss the elephant, Samberg offers, "or if we've gotten it to leave before then."

Christian Bale's Dick Cheney biopic 'Vice' and Bradley Cooper's directorial debut 'A Star Is Born' dominated the Golden Globe Awards nominations announced on Thursday, kicking off annual awards season in the Hollywood which culminates with the much-awaited Academy Awards in February. 
 
Actors Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann, and Christian Slater unveiled the nominations for 25 categories of the 76th Golden Globes Awards. 
 
' Vice,' &nbsp;the biographical drama about former US vice president Dick Cheney amassed a total of six Golden Globe nominations, including best picture, best director for Adam McKay and best actor -musical or comedy for Bale. 
 
Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen-starrer 'Green Book', 'A Star is Born' and Yorgos Lanthimos' 'The Favourite', have all secured five nominations each. 
 
'Green Book', inspired by the true story about friendship between Dr Donald Shirley, an erudite African American pianist and his white chauffer Tony Lip, got nominated in best picture - musical or comedy, best director, best actor and best supporting actor categories. 
 
Cooper's 'A Star is Born' has earned the actor a nod for best director - drama. He has secured another nomination in best actor - drama category. His co-star, Lady Gaga has been nominated in best actress - drama segment. 
 
'The Favourite', Lanthimos' royal drama about Queen Anne and her two court favourites Abigail Hill and Sarah Churchill, have secured nods for the film's three lead stars -- Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone -- apart from being nominated in best picture - musical or comedy and best screenplay. 
 
Colman has been nominated in best actress - musical or comedy, while Stone and Weisz will be battling for best supporting actress award. 
 
Marvel's 'Black Panther' and Barry Jenkins' James Baldwin novel adaptation, 'If Beale Street Could Talk', have been nominated in best picture drama category of the awards. They are joined by Spike Lee's 'BlacKkKlansman', Rami Malek-starrer 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'A Star Is Born'. 
 
Alfonso Cuaron's ode to domestic workers of Mexico, 'Roma', has fetched the filmmaker nods in the best director and best screenplay categories. 
 
Though, the film was not nominated in best picture category, it is considered a strong contender in best foreign language category. The Mexican feature is joined by 'Shoplifters' (Japan), 'Never Look Away' (Germany), 'Girl' (Belgium) and 'Capernaum' (Lebanon). 
 
Wes Anderson's stop motion animated drama 'Isle of Dogs' has been nominated in the best animated feature category. The film is joined by Disney's 'Incredibles 2', 'Ralph Breaks the Internet', 'Maira' and Sony's 'Spider-man Into the Spider-verse'. 
 
In the best actor - drama category, Cooper is joined by Willem Dafoe for At Eternity's Gate; Lucas Hedges for 'Boy Erased'; Rami Malek for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and John David Washington for 'BlacKkKlansman'. 
 
While Gaga will be accompanied by Glenn Close for 'The Wife'; Nicole Kidman for 'Destroyer'; Melissa McCarthy for 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?'; and Rosamund Pike for 'A Private War' in the best actress - drama segment. 
 
Damian Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic 'First Man', a festival favourite, only managed two nominations -- best supporting actress for Claire Foy and best original score for Justin Hurwitz. The film's leading man, Ryan Gosling, failed to get nominated in best actor category. 
 
Actors Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will be the hosts of the ceremony to be held on January 6.
