But in recent years, the tech bro has proliferated on movie screens as Hollywood’s go-to bad guy. It’s a rise that has mirrored mounting fears over technology’s expanding reach into our lives and increasing skepticism for the not-always-altruistic motives of the men – and it is mostly men – who control today’s digital empires.

Some of these portrayals you could chalk up to Hollywood jealousy over the emergence of another California epicenter of innovation. But those worlds merged long ago. Many of the companies that released these movies are disrupters, themselves — none more than Netflix, distributor of Glass Onion. The streamer was cajoled into releasing Johnson’s sequel more widely in theaters than any previous Netflix release. Estimates suggested the film collected some $15 million over opening weekend, the old-fashioned way, but Netflix executives have said they don’t plan to make a habit of such theatrical rollouts.

And the distrust goes deeper than any Hollywood-Silicon Valley rivalry. A recent Quinnipiac poll found that 70% of Americans think social media companies do more harm than good. Tech leaders like Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg have at times been seen favorably by only 1 in 5 Americans.

As characters, tech bros — hoodie-wearing descendants of the mad scientist — have formed an archetype: Masters of the universe whose hubris leads to catastrophe, social media savants who can’t manage their personal relationships. Whether their visions of the future pan out or not, we end up living in their world, either way. They’re villains who see themselves as heroes.

“In my mind, he’s really the most dangerous human being around,” Rylance says of his Peter Isherwell. “He believes that we can dominate our way out of any problem that nature hands us. I think that’s the same kind of thinking that’s got us into the problem we’re in now, trying to dominate each other and dominate all the life we’re intimately connected to and dependent on.”

Glass Onion, nominated for best adapted screenplay, presents a new escalation in tech mogul mockery. Norton’s eminently punchable CEO, with a name so nearly “Bro,” is enormously rich, powerful, and, considering that he’s working on a volatile new energy source, dangerous. But Bron is also, as Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc eventually deduces, an idiot. “A vainglorious buffoon,” Blanc says.

In Johnson’s film, the tech bro/emperor bro truly has no clothes. He’s just skating by with lies, deceit, and a bunch of not-real words like “predefinite” and “inbreathiate.”

Even though Johnson wrote Glass Onion&nbsp;well before Elon Musk’s shambolic Twitter takeover, the movie’s release seemed almost preternaturally timed to coincide with it. The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive was only one of Johnson’s real-world inspirations, some took Bron as a direct Musk parody. In a widely read Twitter thread, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro said Johnson was dramatising Musk as “a bad and stupid man,” which he called “an incredibly stupid theory, since Musk is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in human history.” He added: “How many rockets has Johnson launched lately?”

Musk, himself, hasn’t publicly commented on Glass Onion, but he has previously had numerous gripes with Hollywood, including its depictions of guys like him. “Hollywood refuses to write even one story about an actual company startup where the CEO isn’t a dweeb and/or evil,” Musk tweeted last year.

Musk will soon enough get his own movie. The Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney on Monday announced his several months into work on Musk, which producers promise will offer a “definitive and unvarnished examination” of the tech entrepreneur.

At the same time as the tech bro’s supervillainy supremacy has emerged, some movies have sought not to lampoon Big Tech but to imbibe some of the digital world’s infinite expanse. Phil Lord, who with Christopher Miller has produced The Mitchells vs the Machines&nbsp;and the multiverse-splitting Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, says the internet has profoundly influenced their approach to film.

“We, legacy media, are responding in maybe subconscious ways to new media,” says Lord. “We’re all just trying to figure out how to live in the new world. It’s changing people’s behavior. It changes the way we find and experience love. It changes the way we live. Of course, the stories we tell and how we tell them are going to change as well and reflect that. Into the Spider-Verse certainly reflects having a lot of content from every era in your brain all at the same time.”

The best-picture favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once, too, is reflective of our multi-screen, media-bombarded lives. Writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, whose film is up for a leading 11 Oscars, say they wanted to channel the confusion and heartache of living in the everything-everywhere existence that tech moguls like Miles Bron helped create.

“The reason why we made the movie is because that’s what modern life feels like,” says Kwan.

So even though Miles Bron won’t go home with an Academy Award on Sunday, he still wins, in a way. It’s his world. We’re all just living in it.

Tech Bros: Hollywood's favorite villains

Written, directed and co-produced by Rian Johnson,&nbsp;'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' offers a glimpse into the shadowy past of&nbsp;Benoit Blanc, a private detective who receives an invitation from billionaire Miles Bron, co-founder of the technology company Alpha. Bron also invites five friends and hosts a murder mystery game at his mansion, the Glass Onion, on his private island in Greece.

In the 'Knives Out' sequel, viewers got a glimpse into Blanc’s personal life and surprisingly, we got to see Hugh Grant playing the detective’s husband named Philip. Speaking about his cameo appearance in the film, Grant said, "It is true, I’m married to James Bond."

The Hollywood star added, "It’s the tiniest little moment. I don’t really know why they wanted to do it but anyway, I thought Knives Out 1 was brilliant, and so yeah, I thought why not? I turn up for a few hours."

Here, Grant is referring to Craig's iconic character,&nbsp;the British secret service agent, James Bond.

Fans have expressed a desire for a prequel focusing on Blanc’s beginnings, but filmmaker Johnson has battled hard to keep his movies self-contained and has chosen to instead become inventive in presenting snippets of the detective’s private life.&nbsp;

"I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title,"&nbsp;Johnson told The Atlantic in an interview. "I want it to just be called Glass Onion."

He continued, "I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there’s a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling."

Due to Christie's presence being ubiquitous in mystery and detective fiction, it has been emulated more than one can count. So most of her whodunits do&nbsp;not have nearly the same impact now. Trust writer-director Rian Johnson to recreate that old magic — for this scribe anyway. His 2019 Christie pastiche 'Knives Out' was both a homage to the Dame and an update. Christie and her work are products of their time. Politically and socially, she was a staunch conservative as apparent in her writings.&nbsp;

At the end of the story, her characters like Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot caught the killer(s) and restored order, and the said order was a clearly-defined class system that underpinned British society. Johnson, through Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc, does not just solve the crime and catches the murderer. He disrupts the societal order. In both the first film and the sequel, we do not just find the identity of the one who committed the violent crime, but also their motivations. It's not just a whodunit, it is simultaneously a whydunit as well. There is also — &nbsp;and this is unique to Johnson — an interplay between characters with and without privilege and that affects the plot.

'Glass Onion', deriving its name from The Beatles song in which John Lennon intentionally wanted to confuse fans who read too much into the songs of the band. The onion, and here I am just theorising, has layers, and if one were to keep peeling it, there would be nothing at the centre at all. The solution to this particular case might be too obvious for even Blanc, who is good with metaphors, to solve.

There is Kathryn Hahn's Claire Debella, Connecticut Governor and aspiring senator, Kate Hudson's Birdie Jay, a big-name fashion designer, her assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick), Dave Bautista's Twitch streamer and men's rights campaigner Duke Cody, and his girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline). The co-founder of Bron's company and former partner Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe) also turns up, something the tech magnate did not see coming for the invitation was just a formality.

True to the title, Johnson builds an intricately structured and engaging mystery peppered with clues and misdirections and clues that are actually misdirections. Johnson also plays with audience expectations, and smartly subverts them at every turn.&nbsp;

The story slyly comments on things like know-it-all tech bro billionaires (similar to a certain someone who recently bought a social media site on a whim) and their unholy connections with politicians, online, misinformed influencers giving all the wrong ideas to the young ones, and son.

But even if one were uninterested in the underlying themes, the story offers a lot of the 'meat' that's present in such mystery stories. Nothing is what it seems. There are layers and layers to these characters and their motivations. Each character, as was true in most Christie&nbsp;stories, has at least one solid motive for the murder.

And among them all, Blanc, with Craig having refurbished the thick, funky Southern accent, observes everyone closely, staying several steps ahead of everyone, including the audience. But as mentioned, there is something so obvious, so profoundly stupid, about this case, similar to just the online murder mystery games a bored, in-between-cases, Blanc plays in the bath and loses every single time.

Unlike their miserable characters, the actors are clearly having a hell of a time playing such rich, vapid characters. The performances, particularly from Norton and Monáe, are unaffected and natural. Johnson is so good at squeezing a lot of drama, tension, and humour from his actors that one gets an idea that casting was very specific and careful, instead of netting the biggest stars the studio could afford as earlier seemed. Craig's Blanc should not work. The accent is badly done, the character is comical, too extra, and to somebody who does not know him, he is the opposite of a cool-minded, brilliant detective. And yet, the actor is an absolute delight to watch.

'Glass Onion' is a delicious murder mystery in which Johnson once again gives that cosy feeling of Christie's tales, and at the same time gives his own subversive touch.
