German biotech firm BioNTech has secured $325 million in a private financing round to boost its cancer immunotherapies pipeline, the company said on Tuesday.

Two-thirds of the money raised came from new investors, BioNTech said in a statement, adding that it would use the funds for research and development as well as its manufacturing infrastructure.

Earlier this year, people close to the matter told Reuters the company had hired banks to prepare an initial public offering which could value it at $4 billion.

Asked about the impact of the fresh funds on its plans to potentially float the company, a company official said BioNTech was still examining various financing options, reiterating earlier statements by the company.

In a first financing round in January 2018, the company secured $270 million.

BioNTech specialises in so-called messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules that instruct human cells to produce therapeutic proteins that trigger an immune response against cancer or infectious diseases. It also works on gene therapies and nanoparticles for cancer immunotherapy.

The company said the Struengmann family, which sold its generic drugs business Hexal to Novartis in 2005 and is already invested in BioNTech, was also among the donors in the second round of financing. It added that the family remained the main shareholder.

Germany's biggest lender Deutsche Bank said Sunday it would cut 18,000 jobs by 2022, as the former leading light of the country's financial sector looks to escape years of turmoil.

The slashing of around one in five of its workforce, to 74,000 employees, is an unprecedented round of departures for Deutsche.

The bank said the layoffs would reduce annual costs by six billion euros ($6.7 billion) over the same period.

"Today we have announced the most fundamental transformation of Deutsche Bank in decades," chief executive Christian Sewing said, dubbing the scheme "a restart for Deutsche Bank".

The lender did not immediately make clear where the axe would fall.

But with executives looking to find synergies in the integration of subsidiary Postbank and central infrastructure roles, many jobs are likely to go in home country Germany.

The new round of job cuts comes on top of some 6,000 already carried out over the past year.

Bosses expect the restructuring plan to sap second-quarter results by some three billion euros this year, making for a net loss of 2.8 billion.

Over the whole year, Deutsche is likely to plunge back into the red after a brief flirtation with profitability in 2018.

The bank does not plan to pay out dividends this year or next.

Last chance

The restructuring could be the last chance for Deutsche after much-hyped merger talks with crosstown rival Commerzbank fell through earlier this year.

Negotiations collapsed despite the backing of the finance ministry in Berlin, which feared to see a vital link in the financing of the country's economy bought up from abroad.

Over the past four years, the firm's market capitalization has fallen by 75 percent, making it a potential target for takeovers by bigger fish.

As markets closed Friday, Deutsche was worth 15 billion euros ($17 billion), placing it firmly at the back of the pack in a European industry dominated by the likes of HSBC (165 billion euros), Spain's Banco Santander (69 billion) and France's BNP Paribas (54 billion).

"Deutsche plays in the first division and should lay the foundations for things to stay that way" over the weekend, urged economy minister Peter Altmaier in the tabloid-style Bild's Sunday edition.

Since he took the helm in early 2018, Sewing has attempted to refocus the sprawling group on stable revenue-generating business areas, including retail banking and so-called transaction banking for businesses.

Meanwhile, Deutsche's focus has shifted from its attempt to compete with US-based global giants back to its home turf of Germany and Europe.

Investment banking burned

In particular, tough cuts to the former flagship investment banking unit have been on the agenda since May.

Sunday's announcements target the once-proud division.

Deutsche will stop almost all share trading activity and is in talks with France's BNP Paribas to sell off some of its business and staff in the field.

On Friday, Garth Ritchie, the head of Deutsche's South African investment banking unit, was first out of the door.

The unit's business had fallen back by 20 percent in the first quarter of 2018 alone, and it was no longer bringing in the fat profits of former years.

Especially in the US, it was for years plagued by lawsuits and scandals, including some linked to the so-called "Panama Papers" leak of sensitive documents about offshore dealings.

On top of the rank-and-file cuts, Deutsche is also rebuilding its board, sending away compliance chief Sylvie Matherat and two other executives.

The group will also create a so-called "bad bank" unit to host some 74 billion euros of low-quality assets, notably those linked to derivatives transactions -- highly speculative financial products.

Deutsche's woes are a microcosm of a struggling German banking sector that was once widely envied.

Last year, more than 32,000 jobs were cut in the industry, or 5.4 percent of the total workforce of 565,000, according to Barkow Consulting figures.

Bosses complain that low interest rates in the eurozone, sluggish economic growth, and competition from new online platforms are sapping their performance.

Deutsche Bank to slash 18,000 jobs by 2022

The European Union said Monday it was "extremely concerned" by Iranian plans to breach the uranium enrichment cap set by the 2015 nuclear deal, calling on Tehran to reverse course.

Iran said Sunday it would breach the cap "in a few hours" and on Monday announced it had passed 4.5 percent enrichment well above the 3.7 percent limit.

It first announced its intention to reduce compliance with the deal in May, a year after US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the pact and reimposed crippling sanctions.

"We strongly urge Iran to stop and reverse all activities that are inconsistent with the commitments made under the JCPOA," EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told reporters.

The JCPOA or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action gave Iran relief from punishing sanctions in return for setting strict limits on its nuclear activities.

The remaining signatories Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and orld say the deal is the best way to stop Iran developing atomic weapons.

"We are extremely concerned by the announcement made over the weekend by Iran regarding the start of the uranium enrichment above the limit of 3.7 percent," Kocijancic said.

The EU will await a report from the UN's atomic energy authority and consult other signatories to the deal before deciding on future steps, Kocijancic said.

Britain, France, and Germany have sought to save the deal by creating a special mechanism called INSTEX to sidestep US sanctions so Iran can keep trading.

But the mechanism is still not operational six months after its launch and Tehran has grown increasingly frustrated at Europe's failure to act effectively.

Brussels officials see the latest announcements from Iran as a bid to pressure the West into doing more to help.

"The situation is extremely difficult for them domestically they are running out of humanitarian supplies," an EU source told AFP.

"They want to preserve the agreement, but they want the benefits they were promised."

The steps Iran has taken so far increasing enrichment and breaching a limit on uranium reserves can be reversed, the source said.

However, if Iran went above five percent of enrichment, the situation would be more serious, officials warn.

The Baloch Republican Party's (BRP) Germany unit has organised a demonstration here to highlight the incidents of enforced disappearances and human rights violations against Baloch people in Balochistan province in Pakistan.

The protest was aimed at highlighting the escalation of military operation against the Baloch people allegedly by the Pakistan Army in Balochistan.

The activists said that the Pakistani military establishment has been abducting and killing Baloch people who attempt to raise their voice against enforced disappearances and worsening human rights violations.

They held placards with slogans like -- '#CPEC is a map of destruction not development for Baloch people' and 'Baloch enforced disappearances, a crime against humanity'.

"We are here in Cologne to highlight Pakistan's inhumane behaviour in Balochistan. As we all know, there is a Baloch genocide going on in Pakistan which is being carried out by the Pakistan Army. Recently, the Pakistan Army has started a new game by releasing some abducted Baloch persons and abducting more people. They continue their military operations in different ports of Balochistan as well," Atta Baloch, social media manager, BRP Germany chapter said.

"In the name of CPEC and other projects, Pakistan has always looted Baloch resources along with China. When activists, doctors, teachers, lawyers or anyone tries to raise their voice against this genocide and (looting of) Baloch resources, they have been abducted or killed. We request the international community and human rights organisations to take note of Pakistan's inhumane behaviour in Balochistan," he added.

Echoing similar sentiments, another BRP activist named Muhammad Baloch also spoke about the enforced disappearances of Baloch people in Balochistan.

"We have gathered here to protest against the brutalities which Pakistan is carrying out in Balochistan. We have witnessed thousands of Baloch activists and students going missing and the numbers are increasing day by day. Unfortunately, Pakistan is carrying out abductions and the world is not questioning about it," he said.

Requesting the international community to intervene, the activist further said, "We request the world to intervene because Pakistan have started abducting women and children and the circumstances are getting even worse day by day. We request the international media and the UN to intervene as we are experiencing a genocide."

Muhammad Baloch hoped that the atrocities would come to an end and Baloch people would be allowed to live in peace.

Human rights activists from various Baloch organisations have been continuing their campaigns around the world to highlight the worsening human rights situation in Pakistan.

Pakistan's establishment has been long criticised over its practice of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings by International bodies and local human rights organisations that dare to speak out on the issue.

According to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, an entity established by the Pakistani government, about 5,000 cases of enforced disappearances have been registered since 2014. Most of them are still unresolved.

Independent local and international human rights organisations put the numbers much higher. Around 20,000 have reportedly been abducted only from Balochistan, out of which more than 2,500 have turned up dead as bullet-riddled dead bodies, bearing signs of extreme torture.

Before being elected as Prime Minister, Imran Khan had admitted in multiple interviews about the involvement of Pakistan's intelligence agencies in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings and vowed to resign if he was unable to put an end to the practice, holding those involved responsible.

Dozens of powerful Afghans resumed talks with the Taliban on Monday in Doha, where a possible ceasefire is on the table along with key issues such as women's rights.

Stakes are high for the talks which follow a week of US-Taliban negotiations with both sides eyeing a resolution to the bloody 18-year conflict.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted that the Afghan gathering "has been a long time coming" and praised the country's "government, civil society, women, and Taliban" for coming together.

Washington has said it wants to seal a political deal with the Taliban ahead of Afghan presidential polls due in September to allow foreign forces to begin to withdraw.

Around 70 delegates are attending the two-day gathering which has been organized by Germany and Qatar.

"History will remember those who were able to set their differences aside for the sake of the country," said Germany envoy Markus Potzel as he opened the gathering Sunday.

A German source confirmed the second day of talks got underway just before 0600 GMT.

Delegate Asila Wardak, a member of the High Peace Council established by former president Hamid Karzai to engage with Taliban elements, said: "everybody is emphasizing on a ceasefire" during Sunday's session.

The Taliban spoke about "women's role, economic development, (and) the role of minorities" in a future settlement, she added.

Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said on Twitter that he looked "forward to a constructive dialogue".

The so-called intra-Afghan meetings follow six days of direct US-Taliban talks that have been put on hold for the two-day Afghan conference and are set to resume Tuesday, according to both sides.

Most productive

US lead negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad said Saturday that the latest round of US-Taliban talks "have been the most productive of the rounds we've had with the Talibs".

The Taliban said they were "happy with progress".

The United States is not participating directly in the two-day Afghan summit, which is being attended by political heavyweights, government officials, and at least six women.

The Taliban, who have steadfastly refused to negotiate with the government of President Ashraf Ghani, have stressed that those attending are only doing so in a "personal capacity".

Ghani's administration, which the Taliban consider a puppet regime, has also been excluded from the direct US-Taliban talks.

Sunday and Monday's gathering is the third such meeting following landmark summits in Moscow in February and May.

An agreement with the Taliban is expected to have two main pillars -- a US withdrawal from Afghanistan and a commitment by the militants not to offer sanctuary to jihadists.

The Taliban's relationship with Al-Qaeda was the main reason for the US invasion nearly 18 years ago.

But the thorny issues of power-sharing with the Taliban, the role of regional powers including Pakistan and India, and the fate of Ghani's administration remain unresolved.

After Britain, Germany has reacted with alarm Sunday to Iran's announcement that it would enrich uranium beyond levels allowed in its 2015 nuclear deal, just over a year after US President Donald Trump pulled out of the pact.

"We strongly urge Iran to stop and reverse all activities inconsistent with its commitments," a German foreign office spokesman was quoted as saying, naming production of larger quantities of low-enriched uranium as well as enrichment to higher levels than allowed.

"We are in contact with the other JCPoA participants regarding the next steps," Berlin added, referring to the 2015 agreement between Iran and six world powers including Russia, Germany, Britain and France.

Iran made the threat earlier Sunday to breach the pact by starting uranium enrichment above the agreed limit unless a solution with the global signatories can be found in the next two months.

The move comes after the United States quit the deal last year and began to reimpose sanctions against the Islamic Republic, urging European allies to follow suit.

China, France, Germany and Russia are the other parties in the deal.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber needed to call upon all her cunning and experience to navigate her way 6-4, 6-3 through an awkward first-round encounter at Wimbledon with German compatriot Tatjana Maria on Tuesday.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has enjoyed mixed fortunes since beating Serena Williams in the final last year, dropping to fifth in the standings, and went out in the first round of the French Open last month.

It was with some nervous tension that she stepped out on Centre Court, opening the action on the second day of the tournament in a traditional fashion as the women's champion.

Maria's combination of slice and guile, rare on a circuit dominated by big-hitting power players, frustrated Kerber, especially in the first set.

"She's playing tricky on grass," Kerber said straight after leaving the court. "I was hoping to stay in the match because you never know what's going to happen with her. She really plays tricky with the slice on both sides."

The players exchanged breaks throughout the match and Kerber thumped shots long and into the net as she came to terms with her 65th-ranked opponent's subtler delivery, producing 12 unforced errors in the first set and 19 overall.

But the left-hander was able to match Maria's all-court game when it mattered, winning the first set with a perfectly judged lob, off-balance and on the run.

The pair served up skilled and entertaining tennis in the second set, Maria drawing gasps of admiration from the crowd for speed and deftness at the net.

Not to be left out, Kerber produced a running shot through her legs and, to earn match point, a smash from the baseline.

She really plays tricky with the slice on both sides." The players exchanged breaks throughout the match and Kerber thumped shots long and into the net as she came to terms with her 65th-ranked opponent's subtler delivery, producing 12 unforced errors in the first set and 19 overall. She finished the match with a thumping forehand that Maria could not handle. The pair, at 31 of the same generation of German tennis players, embraced warmly at the net. Kerber, with 29, has won more grasscourt matches than any other woman on the circuit over the last four years and last week reached the final of the Eastbourne tournament where she lost to powerful hitter Karolina Pliskova. She will play 96th-ranked Lauren Davis of the United States in the second round.

Germany has arrested a Bosnian man suspected of involvement in Islamic State attacks in Paris four years ago that killed 130 people, prosecutors in the eastern state of Saxony said on Thursday.

The 39-year-old suspect was arrested last week, prosecutors said, after an investigation into three Bosnians suspected of breaching Germany`s War Weapons Control Act, which regulates the manufacturing, sale, and transport of arms used in conflicts.

Belgium had issued a European arrest warrant for the arrested man on suspicion of supporting the militants who carried out the attacks in Paris in 2015 and in Belgium a year later.

The man is in custody prior to extradition, prosecutors said. They gave no details about when he would be extradited. Special police units found no weapons in his possession when he was arrested, the prosecutors said, German investigators were still looking into the activities of the two other Bosnian nationals with links to the arrested suspect.

The prime surviving suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last year in Belgium over a shootout with police in Brussels.

Abdeslam is in a French prison awaiting trial for his role in the attacks in Paris in November 2015. His trial may not start until late 2020.

US carmaker Ford said Thursday that it plans to slash a total of 12,000 jobs across Europe as part of a previously announced restructuring.

The overall figure includes 5,400 layoffs already announced in Germany and 1,700 in Wales.

The move comes as the company closes or sells six plants in Britain, France, Russia and Slovakia this year and next.

The job cuts will come "primarily through voluntary separation programmes", said Ford, which employs around 51,000 people and operates 24 factories around Europe.

As well as the factory closure in Wales, three sites in Russia, one in Slovakia and one in France will be shuttered.

Thursday is the first time Ford has publicly stated the jobs impact of its plans.

Group chief executive Jim Hackett announced last autumn a massive restructuring of the American firm, aiming to save $11 billion and turn Ford into a more "agile" group with faster decision-making processes.

The company aims to catch up with the world leaders in the industry's transformation towards autonomous and electric-powered driving, as well as services like car-sharing and ride-sharing.

Ford says that "financial results in Europe are on track to significantly improve for the full year 2019", adding that in future it will refocus on electric mobility.

Its European operations will be reorganised into three divisions: commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, and imports.

"This could be the first step towards a complete or partial sale" of Ford's car business in Europe, industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer of the University of Duisburg-Essen's CAR institute told AFP.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen trembling once again during a ceremony in Berlin on Thursday, eight days after a similar incident. Video showed Merkel gripping her arms as her body was shaking on Thursday. After about two minutes, she looked steadier and shook hands with the new justice minister.

Germany's Angela Merkel seen shaking again in Berlin

At 3:50 pm on June 28, 1919 crowds erupted in joy and salvos of celebratory gunfire rang ou, the Treaty of Versailles had just been signed. World War I was finally over.

Signed at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris, the text set out 440 punishing articles that crippled Germany economically and morally.

Although the treaty was intended to leave the war's aggressor too weak to pose a new threat, its harsh terms eventually led the world into another global conflict just 20 years later.

Victors cheered

The fountains at France's former royal residence were in operation for the signing ceremony for the first time since war broke out in 1914.

The crowd of soldiers and civilians gathered outside the vast palace cheered the leaders of the victor nations as they arrived, France's Georges Clemenceau, Britain's David Lloyd George and America's Thomas Woodrow Wilson.

The Big Three had dominated the peace talks that opened in Paris in January, two months after Germany capitulated and signed an armistice in November 1918.

The negotiations had been difficult, with Clemenceau less open than his US and British allies to compromise and insisting, "Germany will pay."

Berlin was not invited, informed only in May of the harsh terms of a settlement that blamed Germany for a conflict that had bled Europe dry.

On June 17 the Allies gave Germany five days to agree or face renewed fighting. Chancellor Philipp Scheidemann resigned in protest but the new government had to accept.

Business-like

The signing ceremony was in the palace's Hall of Mirrors, where the German Empire was proclaimed in 1871, on the defeat of France.

It was programmed for the exact same day five years previously that Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated -- the event that sparked World War I.

On entering the crowded room, Clemenceau went up to a group of French soldiers whose faces had been badly mutilated in the conflict.

"You have suffered a lot, but here is your reward," he reportedly said, gesturing towards the table in the centre of the room where the documents were waiting to be signed.

The event was "business-like" and over in 37 minutes, The New York Times reported.

After being opened, "there was merely a succession of delegates advancing to the table on which the conventions had been laid and signing their names."

There were 27 delegations representing 32 powers.

First to step forward to sign were the two German representatives, led by Foreign Minister Hermann Mueller.

"Mueller's face and neck were flushed crimson, and it was evident that both Germans felt keenly the position in which they were placed," the New York Times said.

The Allies followed, starting with Wilson.

"Hardly was the ink on the final signature dry when the old palace of Versailles ... shook from the concussion of the guns in the park outside that announced in salvos that the Germans had capitulated," the newspaper said.

Punishing terms

The terms were crippling for Germany, which had to accept a "war guilt" clause that made it responsible for paying out war damages.

The treaty redrew the map of Europe, Germany losing around 15 per cent of its territory and 10 per cent of its population along with all its colonies.

The country was split by the Danzig corridor, which fell under Polish rule, and the regions of Alsace and Lorraine were returned to France.

Its coal-rich Saarland, bordering France, was placed under an international mandate for 15 years. The adjoining Rhineland was demilitarised.

Military service was abolished and German ground troops were limited to 100,000 men, its navy also restricted and an air force forbidden.

The treaty also created the League of Nations -- the precursor to the United Nations -- although Germany was initially excluded.

Humiliation, anger

Germany was humiliated, the harshness of the treaty causing shock and anger among its people.

The reparations demanded by the Allies set in 1921, were around 132 billion German gold marks (more than $30 billion at the time), although this was later reduced.

But Germany struggled to pay and descended into economic chaos and hyperinflation.

The resentment fuelled nationalism and provided a breeding ground for the rising Nazis, whose leader Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 refusing to continue paying the reparations.

Europe would soon be at war again.

Huawei, the Chinese technology and telecoms group hit by US sanctions, said on Monday it was confident of meeting the security requirements that Germany is setting for its fifth-generation mobile networks.

The upbeat comment, by Huawei's Germany chief technology officer Werner Haas, comes as the country's telecoms and cyber watchdogs hone security criteria that vendors such as Huawei will have to fulfil to gain certification.

Germany has just completed a $7.4 billion auction of 5G spectrum that can, for example, run "smart" factories, setting the stage for Huawei and rivals Ericsson and Nokia to vie for billions in deals.

"We expect there to be good and pragmatic (security) solutions - and we have no doubt that we will fulfil them," Haas told reporters in Berlin.

US President Donald Trump's administration has targeted Huawei as part of his broader drive to rebalance trade with China, last month imposing export controls on the Shenzhen-based global networks market leader.

That measure has forced key Western suppliers, such as UK-based chip designer ARM, to curb deliveries and led Huawei's founder, Ren Zhengfei, to warn that revenue could take a $30 billion hit this year as a result.

In Germany, Europe's largest economy, the government and regulators have, after lengthy debate, spurned US calls to banish Huawei on national security grounds.

Instead, they have set a level playing field for all foreign vendors, requiring them to meet key technical criteria - such as strong encryption of sensitive information, or whether a network is robust enough to withstand sabotage.

These technical criteria, sketched out in March, are still being refined. A further requirement for vendors to be deemed "trustworthy" to win certification is also under discussion, and was raised by Economy Minister Peter Altmaier in China last week.

One concern in the West has been a Chinese intelligence law that requires citizens and companies to aid the state in espionage investigations. Huawei founder Ren has said that no law required his company to install so-called backdoors that could be used for spying.

Haas said Huawei, which has long-standing supplier relationships with Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica Deutschland, was already well known in Germany as a secure, safe and reliable partner.

He also pushed back against US assertions that backdoors in networks were an issue. Instead, he said, it was vital for vendors and operators to make sure that the billions of devices and sensors that will be connected to the so-called Internet of Things(IoT) are safe.

'No doubt' will be able to meet German 5G security standards: Huawei

Metro said that an unsolicited offer by two prominent investors to take over the German retailer substantially undervalues it and advised shareholders on Sunday to hold off on taking action until management comments further.

On Friday, EP Global Commerce, an acquisition vehicle owned by the Czech and Slovak investors, made the takeover offer, which valued the company at 5.8 billion euros ($6.6 billion).

The retailer, noting that the offer price was only 3% above the closing share price on Friday, said the bid "substantially undervalues the company and does not reflect its value creation plan".

Metro said management was continuing to transform the company. It said it would comment further once the full offer document was available and that shareholders should take no action in the meanwhile.

EP Global Commerce, which already held a stake of nearly 11% in Metro, said on Friday that its offer price of 16 euros for each ordinary share and 13.80 euros for each preferred share represented a 34.5% premium to when EP Global Commerce made its initial investment in August.

The firm, co-owned by Czech investor Daniel Kretinsky and Slovak partner Patrik Tkac, said the offer was "a compelling value and a unique opportunity" for shareholders given the difficult market and challenges facing Metro.

Once a sprawling retail conglomerate, Metro has in recent years been restructuring to focus on its core cash-and-carry business, selling off the Kaufhof department stores and then splitting from consumer electronics group Ceconomy.

It still operates in 26 countries with 771 stores and 150,000 employees, but it is trying to offload its loss-making Real hypermarkets chain, as well as its operations in China.

The Czech and Slovak bidders signalled that further changes were needed at Metro, though they said they would not close stores in Germany and its core markets, or cut jobs substantially.

"Metro needs to regain the capability to swiftly react," they said, adding that otherwise, it "would be exposed to significant risks due to stagnant or declining results." ($1 = 0.8798 euros)
