As part of a wider justice reform bill, the French lawmakers in the National Assembly passed a bill Wednesday that lets police surveil suspects by remotely activating cameras, microphones and GPS location systems on their phones and other devices.&nbsp;

A few caveats, however, have been added to stop the government from becoming a full-blown&nbsp;authoritarian state. To surveil any suspect, a judge will have to approve the use of special powers and the total duration of surveillance cannot exceed six months. Moreover, the said powers cannot be used against journalists, lawyers, MPs and other "sensitive professions".&nbsp;

Notably, the Senate had green-lit the provisions of the justice bill last month. However, after the new amendments were introduced on Wednesday, the proposal will be sent back for approval before it can become law.&nbsp;

Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti shot down comparisons with the Orwell novel saying the law was aimed at saving people's lives.&nbsp;

"We're far away from the totalitarianism of '1984'," said&nbsp;Dupond-Moretti adding,&nbsp;"People's lives will be saved by the law."

Although the minister claims that the law and its provision will only be applied to a 'dozen cases a year', the opposition parties and rights groups are wary that the Macron government is setting up a smokescreen for a 'surveillance state'.&nbsp;

Calling the proposal part of a "slide into heavy-handed security",&nbsp;digital rights group La Quadrature du Net said the provisions&nbsp;"raise serious concerns over infringements of fundamental liberties".&nbsp;

The group argued that police will be utilising the security vulnerabilities to target the dissidents. Moreover, it might use security holes to its advantage, instead of telling manufacturers how to patch those holes.&nbsp;

The timing of the passing of the bill could not have been worse, experts argue. Currently, the entire country is facing a sea of protests after a 17-year-old was shot by police in a Paris suburb.&nbsp;

Russian troops are driving mobile propaganda vans with large-screen televisions at the captured Mariupol city of Ukraine in a bid to change their perception of the war and Moscow. Videos shared by the TASS news agency showed the vans, dubbed “mobile information complexes”, playing state TV news segments and political chat shows where experts speak highly of the invasion in a city which lacks electricity and running water and has been one of the victims of the worst shelling of the Ukraine war, which began on February 24. Three mobile complexes for informing the population are deployed in Mariupol, reported TASS.

According to the Guardian, these mobile screen vans have been deployed to places where Mariupol residents are receiving humanitarian aid, Russian documents, and at points in the city where drinking water is available.

“The practice of ‘there is nothing to eat, so feed them lies’ is gaining momentum,” wrote Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian mayor of Mariupol.

He called it “cynicism of the highest level”.

The press service of Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations told TASS that the vans were deployed in the city because, for nearly three months, the "residents of Mariupol were in an information vacuum due to a lack of power supply."

Such an Orwellian move by Russia is an attempt to pacify and integrate captured cities like Mariupol despite earlier assurances by Vladimir Putin that Russia did not seek to occupy new territory in Ukraine, The Guardian reports.

A B.Ed. college situated in the town serving as the district headquarters for East Champaran district has showcased, inside its premises, nearly a score of mementoes received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which went under the hammer earlier this year.

Among the mementoes on display here is a cutout of the map of India, gifted by Bardoli MP Parbhubhai Vasava on which one finds a photograph of PM Modi along with depictions of his endeavours such as the Swachh Bharat Yojana, the Ujjwala scheme and the Start-Up India initiative.

Another notable exhibit is a memento, designed like a Buddhist Stupa, which was presented to the prime minister by the Maharashtra government upon commencement of construction of a memorial of B R Ambedkar.

"It is a matter of pride for us that we happen to be the only ones in Bihar to have won some of the over 1,000 mementoes in the auction.

"The funds thus generated were meant to be diverted for the Namami Gange project which would, again, be of benefit of our state since the holy river flows here," says Yamuna Sekaria who heads the 'Radha Krishna Seva Sansthan', the name by which the college is better known.

The son of Shambhu Nath Sekaria, a well-known social and environmental activist from Motihari, Yamuna Sekaria calls himself an ardent admirer of Modi, greatly impressed by his tireless energy and his passion to serve the nation.

Sekaria, however, declines to divulge the prices at which the items were sold at the auction, saying, all the participants had been requested to keep it a secret, since "it was not a sell-off meant for commercial purposes".

PM Modi had visited the town in April last year when he inaugurated a railway station named 'Bapudham' highlighting the town's association with the Champaran Satyagraha, which Mahatma Gandhi had launched for oppressed indigo planters.

A certificate of appreciation issued by the National Gallery of Modern Arts issued to those who had spent their time and efforts in participating in the auction of the prime minister's mementoes is also proudly displayed at the college.&nbsp;
