"This is done in order to RESHORE Generic Pharmaceutical Production into America, with a penalty to those Companies that decide not to build Plant and Equipment within the stated period of time given to them," Trump added. "The objective of this Policy is to protect the people of the United States."

The escalation poses a significant long-term challenge to foreign export hubs, particularly India. Notably, Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers supply roughly 40% of all generic drugs consumed in the United States by volume.<h2>"Pharmacy of the World"</h2>India is widely dubbed the "Pharmacy of the World," holding over 3,000 US FDA-approved manufacturing plants. This is the highest number of US FDA-compliant facilities located outside of the United States. Pharma giant Pfizer and UN-backed international public health group Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) on Tuesday struck a licensing agreement over Pfizer's&nbsp;COVID-19 pill. The agreement will allow MPP to grant sub-licenses to qualified generic drug manufacturers across the world to make their own versions of the Covid pill. Pfizer will sell the pills it manufactures under the brand name Paxlovid.

Pfizer already makes one of the most widely used COVID-19 vaccines. The company said that the Covid pill has cut the chance of hospitalisation or death for adults at risk of severe disease by 89% in its clinical trial. The drug will be used in combination with ritonavir, an HIV drug that is already available generically.

Pfizer's licensing deal follows a similar arrangement by rival Merck &amp; Co for generic manufacturing of its COVID-19 treatment. The deals are unusual arrangements that acknowledge the dire need for effective treatments as well as the pressure drugmakers are under to make their life-saving drugs accessible at very low costs.

The 95 countries in the license agreement cover around 53% of the world's population and include all low- and lower-middle-income countries and some upper-middle-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. They also include countries that have transitioned from lower-middle to upper-middle-income status in the past five years, Pfizer and the MPP said.

Pfizer will waive royalties on sales in low-income countries. It will also waive them in the other countries covered by the agreement as long as COVID-19 remains classified as a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization.

Pfizer's version of the drug will be in high demand. The company has said it expects to manufacture 180,000 treatment courses by the end of next month and at least 50 million courses by the end of 2022.

German biotech firm BioNTech has secured $325 million in a private financing round to boost its cancer immunotherapies pipeline, the company said on Tuesday.

Two-thirds of the money raised came from new investors, BioNTech said in a statement, adding that it would use the funds for research and development as well as its manufacturing infrastructure.

Earlier this year, people close to the matter told Reuters the company had hired banks to prepare an initial public offering which could value it at $4 billion.

Asked about the impact of the fresh funds on its plans to potentially float the company, a company official said BioNTech was still examining various financing options, reiterating earlier statements by the company.

In a first financing round in January 2018, the company secured $270 million.

BioNTech specialises in so-called messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules that instruct human cells to produce therapeutic proteins that trigger an immune response against cancer or infectious diseases. It also works on gene therapies and nanoparticles for cancer immunotherapy.

The company said the Struengmann family, which sold its generic drugs business Hexal to Novartis in 2005 and is already invested in BioNTech, was also among the donors in the second round of financing. It added that the family remained the main shareholder.
