Jammu and Kashmir's separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, 91, died at his residence on Wednesday night.

Geelani was suffering from kidney disease for over two decades. Reports say the Internet was shut by authorities to prevent confusion and rumours surrounding Geelani's death.

Reports claim he was buried in &nbsp;Srinagar’s Hyderpora area on Thursday morning.

Geelani was a three-time MLA from Sopore winning assembly elections in 1972, 1977 and 1987. He was the founder member of the Hurriyat Conference in Jammu and Kashmir and later formed the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat&nbsp;in 2003 as he broke away from Hurriyat.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan expressed condolences over Geelani's death. Sajad Lone, who had once accused Geelani of instigating statements leading to his father Abdul Gani Lone's killing also expressed his condolences.&nbsp;

Geelani was born in 1929 in Bandipora district and completed his education from Oriental College in Lahore. He worked as a teacher for few years before joining Jamaat-e-Islami. Geelani's passport was seized in 1981 and never returned except in 2006 in order to allow him to complete Hajj pilgrimage.

Authorities imposed restrictions as a precautionary measure with heavy security around Geelani's residence. The roads leading up to his residence was sealed.

The Income-Tax Department has attached a house of hardline Kashmiri separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani located in Delhi in connection with an over Rs 3.62 crore tax evasion case against him.

The flat is located in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area and the Tax Recovery Officer (TRO) of the department has sealed the house for allegedly "failing" to pay Rs 3,62,62,160 income tax for assessment years 1996-97 to 2001-02, as per an order accessed by PTI.

The department has undertaken the action under section 222 of the I-T Act (assessee deemed in default of tax payment) and it has "prohibited and restrained" the Hurriyat Conference leader from transferring the asset.

The TRO is an enforcement action taking arm of the tax department and it deals with cases of wilful defaulters. The authority is empowered to attach an asset and subsequently auction it to realise the tax dues.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), last month, had levied a penalty of Rs 14.40 lakh on Geelani in a 17-year-old case of illegal possession of USD 10,000 in alleged contravention of the foreign exchange law, officials said Friday.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has summoned separatist Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Nadeem Geelani, son of another separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for questioning on Monday in Delhi in a terror funding case, officials said.

The move comes amidst the government crackdown on separatist leaders in Kashmir in the aftermath of Pulwama terror attack.

About a week ago, the NIA carried out searches at seven locations of separatists in the Kashmir valley, including that of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in connection with a terror funding case.

The agency claimed to have recovered several incriminating documents, including letterheads of different terrorist organisations as well as high-end communication systems, during the raid.

“High tech internet communication set up was also recovered from the residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq," the premier probe agency for terror crimes had said.

"Teams recovered incriminating documents including property papers, financial transactions receipts and bank account details. Significantly, letterheads of different terrorist organisations, as well as documents relating to recommendations for the visa for admission in Pakistan Educational Institutions, were found," the NIA statement had added.

During the searches, the teams also recovered electronic devices including laptops, e-tablets, mobile phones, pen drives, communication system and DVRs.&nbsp;

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday called up hard-line Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, in yet another provocative act on the eve of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/pm-modi-to-visit-jammu-and-kashmir-on-february-3-ram-madhav-191632">Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir</a>.

Significantly, Qureshi`s phone call to Geelani came just a day ahead of the prime minister`s visit to the state.

Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai was today elected chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, replacing Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Geelani held the post for 15 years since the party was formed following a split in the Hurriyat Conference in 2003.

Sehrai was elected chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat unanimously at a meeting of its executive committee after Geelani decided to step down.

Addressing the meeting, Geelani said due to his continuous house arrest for the past eight years, he had not been able to practically contribute to the cause, which was an &quot;injustice&quot; not only with the post but his conscience as well.

&quot;So, I wilfully step-down from the chairmanship and advise the &#39;shoora&#39; (council) to arrange an alternative at the earliest,&quot; the hardliner said.

Geelani will, however, continue to head the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference of which Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is a constituent, sources said.

Political observers here believe that Sehrai will ultimately succeed 88-year-old Geelani as the head of the Hurriyat Conference as well.

A spokesman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat said Sehrai has been appointed as interim chairman of the party till organisational elections were held later this year.

On Tuesday 9th January 2018, the Army and Kashmir Police received an input about 3-4 terrorists lodged in a village in Anantnag. Immediately, the army moved for an operation. As a procedure, the terrorists were told to surrender and given adequate time.&nbsp;

However, when they started firing over the security forces, they retaliated which resulted in the killing of one of the terrorists named Farhan Wani. The boy was just 18-year-old at the time of his death.&nbsp;

Farhan Wani came from a peaceful village of Khudgami in Kulgam District of Kashmir. The 18-year old represents the new breed of Kashmiri militants who are not very experienced or mature. They are young immature boys who are brainwashed and lured into the deep gorges of terrorism on the pretext of Islamic Jihad or Freedom of Kashmir.

Over last three decades, the militancy in Kashmir has taken many turns. In the earlier times, we saw the mercenaries from Pakistan, Afghanistan and even from other countries coming to Kashmir to participate in the so-called Jihad. Pakistan soon realised that it is being branded as a perpetrator of terrorism in the global community. So, the strategy changed once again.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

This time, Pakistan recruited the poor, unemployed and distressed youth of the valley after radicalising and brainwashing them through false propaganda. The goal was to claim state-sponsored terrorism as a people&rsquo;s movement.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Farhan Wani was one of the many victims of this dirty game of Pakistan. He was a student of class XI when he left one day in June 2017 and never returned.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

On a sunny afternoon, Farhan Wani, apparently, left for Physics tuition but joined the ranks of Hijbul Mujahidin, a terrorist group supported and nurtured by Pakistan. Son of a school Teacher, Mr Ghulam Mohammad Wani, Farhan was a very bright student and got a CGPA of 9.6 on his 10th Board exam.

&nbsp;

There are many Farhan Wani in the ranks and cadres of these groups. Some have joined Lashkar-e Taiyyaba, Some Jaish-e-Muhammad and some Hijbul Mujahidin. But one thing is common among all of them. These young terrorists, barely in their late teens,&nbsp; are radicalised by Pakistan-sponsored religious teachers and recruiters who are working in the disguise of common Kashmiri citizens.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Who is responsible for the death of this young soul? Is it the Armed Forces? No.

&nbsp;

&nbsp;It is the duty of the Indian military forces to fight the armed mercenaries. They tried their best to get him back. Defence sources even confirm that it was assured to the father of Farhan that if he comes back, no cases will be registered against him since he is not involved in any of the criminal activity and Army will provide the best of its help to settle him down.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The social leaders and his father urged him to come back. The emotional post on his Facebook profile is very touching. Mr Ghulam Mohammad thought that, like Majid, who returned last year from Lashkar-e-Taiyyaba, his son will also return some day.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Ghulam Mohammad was only partially right. Farhan returned but in the form of a lifeless body.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Every time I see a death in Kashmir, there is a very pertinent question that knocks in my mind. Among all the Kashmiri boys who turned militant, I always see a pattern. Having spent a considerable time in Kashmir, I have failed to see even a single militant from the influential families of the so-called Hurriyat leaders or religious teachers who are, otherwise, radicalising these innocent youths and luring them into the trap of Death. Most of the young men who turned into terrorists are people are from local communities. Sons of common people, such as teachers, farmers or even daily workers.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

&nbsp;Just check where the families of these leaders reside? They are enjoying in some foreign country or Delhi or in some other metro at the cost of the lives of poor innocent Kashmiri boys.

These so-called leaders of Kashmiri People who are not even thinking twice before sending these innocent boys to a never-ending death trap of terrorism are the real conspirators of Farhan&rsquo;s Death and every Kashmiri should understand that.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

I heard today that at the time when Farhan was being cremated, Syed Ali Shah Geelani addressed the public through phone and said that the uprising in Kashmir will not die. Many Farhan will now take up arms to fight the Forces and the fire of this struggle will not die.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

My suggestion to Mr Geelani is simple, why don&rsquo;t you send your own family members to join these groups. Your grandson Izhaar is a&nbsp; pilot with a known private airlines. Another grandson Anees is working with J&amp;K State government in a senior position, there are other grandsons who are studying in various schools of India and are of the same age as Farhan was. Why don&rsquo;t you tell them to join these terrorist groups? they can lead the struggle of your so-called Kashmiri Jihad. They can effectively replace him in the group. Instead of making so much of fuss in front of the public, call them and let them join.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

By the way, is there even a single person from your own family who joined this so-called Jihad? The answer is a clear no.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Not only Geelani, if I ask how many family members of the so-called religious teachers, who are busy radicalising the many Farhan&rsquo;s of the Kashmir valley, have joined the ranks of the Mujahidin&rsquo;s? The answer is NIL. Actually, they are only bidding to the dictate of their masters who are sitting abroad and paying them huge sums of money to lure innocent youth into the trap of terrorism.

It is high time for the common people of Kashmir to realise what they want? Do they want the leaders like Geelani and Yasin Malik and Mirvaiz Umar Farooq who want to use the common Kashmiri in the name of aazadi or do they want a prosperous atmosphere where every Kashmiri is able to grow and live without fear?&nbsp;

I think any wise Kashmiri will be able to make a choice.&nbsp;

Opinion: The story of many Farhan Wani's of Kashmir

Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been asked to explain possession of thousands of US dollars that India suspects to be for fomenting trouble in Jammu and Kashmir.

India&#39;s Enforcement Directorate (ED) confirmed on Twitter that the 87-year-old Hurriyat leader was charged with a show cause notice for possessing $10,000.

The charge comes days after a sting operation allegedly caught Hurriyat leader, Naeem Khan, saying that Pakistan was funding their separatist cause.
