Norway, Ireland, and Spain have formally recognized the state of Palestine, joining over 140 of the 193 UN member countries. Norway’s Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, told our Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, “It is the right thing to do at the right time.” Eide highlighted that India had recognized Palestine in the 1980s, a move Norway emulated last week. US military is temporarily removing the humanitarian aid pier off Gaza's coast after the structure broke off, as per a statement by the Pentagon on Tuesday (May 28).

This comes as a section of the pier had detached and repairs to the pier are necessary before Washington continues to deliver the critical aid to Gazans.

"Over the next 48 hours, US forces will remove the pier from its anchored position on the coast and tow it back to the Israeli coastal city of Ashdod to begin repairs," Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said.

This floating pier, part of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) operation, was first announced on March 8 after President Joe Biden tasked the military with leading a temporary humanitarian aid mission.

It became operational on May 17 and costs an estimated $320 million for the first 90 days and involves about 1,000 US service members.

Pentagon spokesperson Singh outlined the repair timeline saying, "Centcom anticipates repairs to the pier to take approximately one week."

Vessels ran aground

The necessity for repairs arose after rough seas on May 25 caused three of the four vessels associated with the pier to run aground. In addition to this, the harsh sea conditions and a North African weather system caused part of the trident pier to detach from its anchored position.

However, Singh highlighted the pier's importance in aid delivery during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

"The pier proved highly valuable in delivering aid to the people of Gaza. Thus, upon completion of the pier repair and reassembly, the intention is to re-anchor the temporary pier to the coast of Gaza and resume humanitarian aid to the people who need it most," she said.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry at least 45 people, including 23 women, children and elderly were killed and 249 others were wounded after the Israeli strike. However, Israel has said that the attack was aimed at a Hamas compound and the army regretted any harm to non-combatants.

“We're looking into this,” said Israeli government spokesman Avi Hyman speaking about the strike in Rafah, adding that it was “definitely grave.”

He added, “Any loss of life, civilian life, is grave and is awful. We seek to go after Hamas and limit civilian casualties...This is an unfolding story.”

Israel War Cabinet's member Benny Gantz hinted that the military of the country is not likely to change its course in the Rafah invasion even after the top UN court on Friday (May 24 ) gave the order to halt the widening offensive.

Israel War Cabinet's member Benny Gantz hinted that the military of the country is not likely to change its course in the Rafah invasion even after the top UN court on Friday (May 24 ) gave the order to halt the widening offensive. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to immediately stop the ongoing military offensive in Rafah, which is located in southern Gaza. However, it did not order a complete ceasefire. Even though Israel is not likely to comply with the court's order, it will increase the pressure on the country. The comments were made by Gantz after the top UN court gave an order to halt the Rafah offensive as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained silent over the entire issue. Gantz said that Israel “set out on a just and necessary campaign following the brutal massacre of its citizens". Also Read: World court orders Israel to 'immediately halt' offensive in Rafah “We will continue operating in accordance with international law wherever we might operate, while safeguarding to the best extent possible the civilian population. Not because of the ICJ, but because of who we are and the values we stand for," he added. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has said that accusations made about Tel Aviv carrying out a genocide in Gaza are “false, outrageous and morally repugnant.” “Israel has not and will not conduct military actions in the Rafah area which may inflict on the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” said Netanyahu’s government on Friday (May 24). The ICJ does not have a police force which can help them in ensuring that their orders are enforced. Israel was also asked by the court to reopen the Rafah border crossing. However, it abstained from ordering a complete cease-fire across Gaza. US, Egypt agree to send aid through Kerem Shalom crossing in Gaza US President Joe Biden appreciated the commitment expressed by Egypt in permitting the flow of UN-provided humanitarian aid into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing on a temporary basis, said the White House. Watch: Israel-Hamas War: ICJ orders Israel to halt military operation in Rafah "President Biden welcomed the commitment from President al-Sisi to permit the flow of UN-provided humanitarian assistance from Egypt through the Karem Shalom crossing on a provisional basis for onward distribution throughout Gaza.
