External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday condemned the disruption of global oil supplies through sanctions and maritime chokepoints, calling deliberate attacks on energy trade and infrastructure a "calculated strategy to hold prices hostage."“Emphasised that continuous distortions of energy markets through obstacles, sanctions & chokepoints are happening with increasing frequency, greater complexity & wider impact,” Jaishankar mentioned in a post on X about his speech at the G20 Plenary. Jaishankar said the world faces an energy crisis defined by unpredictability and disruption, with unaffordable costs and difficulty getting supplies. Earlier in September, US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which threatened tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and backed out of it within a month. Jaishankar urged the G20 to show understanding and leadership to keep energy markets "open and predictable." He also stressed that India needs reliable LPG supplies for clean cooking. On critical minerals, he reiterated India's National Mission, which covers exploration and recycling. He also spoke about a proposed G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative. The comments add to India's wider pushback against unilateral trade measures. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has argued that tariffs imposed unilaterally must follow World Trade Organisation rules, as India faces a 10% US "forced labour" tariff and an American probe into alleged excess capacity.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday urged G20 counterparts, including Russia's Sergei Lavrov, to work together to address geopolitical crises, warning that the world is at a decisive moment as conflicts in Ukraine and Iran deepen divisions among member countries. A traditional group photograph scheduled for Friday morning was cancelled shortly before the two-day meeting began after some European officials objected to appearing alongside Lavrov. European leaders have also refused to participate in photographs with Russian delegations at previous G20 meetings this year, as fighting continues following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. A US official said the photograph was cancelled because of the controversy and to prevent a ceremonial photo opportunity from becoming a diplomatic distraction. The foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, is taking place just days before the US midterm elections. It also comes as global energy prices have surged following the US war on Iran. The gathering will set the stage for a December G20 leaders' summit in Miami at President Donald Trump's Doral resort. However, despite Washington's efforts to prioritise economic growth, trade imbalances and supply chain challenges, including energy and critical minerals, major breakthroughs are not expected. A diplomatic source said the meeting would likely end with a chair summary drafted by the United States rather than a final declaration. Addressing the opening plenary on Friday, Rubio said the world was facing a critical ‘moment of choosing’ as it dealt with interconnected economic and geopolitical crises. He called on the Group of 20 economies, which include China, India, Russia, Japan, Germany and France, to cooperate in tackling threats to global energy and food supply chains, as well as protecting freedom of navigation. Also Read: Putin's war warning shakes Europe: NATO builds war bunkers, Britain stockpiles food | Gravitas
'No normality' with Russia
Russia has remained isolated by most Western countries since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, while Lavrov continues to face international sanctions. Kallas said Russia's actions continued to contradict any claims that it was willing to pursue peace talks. "Even if they would have said this in words, their deeds tell something else," she said. “July, August, and September have been the deadliest months for civilians in Ukraine.” "They should show with their deeds that they are ready to negotiate, but they are clearly, clearly not," she added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who is in India to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting, hit out at Western countries on Thursday (March 2) by saying that the West is isolating itself now. Addressing a press conference, Lavrov said the West represents itself as the beacon of democracy but keeps on bullying others. "....We do not feel isolated. The West is isolating itself now. If the West is so democratic then why can't they apply democratic principles internationally?" Lavrov said. The Russian foreign minister's remark came after Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia for its offensive in Ukraine, which recently marked one year.
