French writer Gilles Perrault, whose "Le Pull-Over Rouge" novel helped spark debate over capital punishment in France, has died, his family said on Thursday. He was 92.

"I can confirm that he died at 92 last night on August 3 from cardiac arrest", a source in his family told AFP.

Born as Jacques Peyroles, he worked for several years as a lawyer before becoming a journalist and then a novelist, writing under the pseudonym Gilles Perrault.&nbsp;

In 1978, he published "Le Pull-Over Rouge" (The Red Sweater), which called into question the conviction of a man, Christian Ranucci, who had been put to death by beheading two years prior for the abduction and killing of an eight-year-old girl in 1974.

The book, which sold some one million copies, sparked vivid debate about the death penalty, which France eventually abolished in 1981.

Perrault was twice convicted of defamation of police over the case, once during an interview and then over material in another book on the case.

He spent years trying to get Ranucci's case reopened, without success.

"It's not a sprint, it's a marathon," he told AFP in 2006, still hoping for an eventual re-examination.

In another critically acclaimed work, he published in 1990 "Notre Ami Le Roi" (Our Friend the King), which shone a critical light on the 30-year reign of Morocco's Hassan II. &nbsp;

"The books of Gilles Perrault are markers for my generation," said Pierre Haski, president of Reporters Without Borders.

Henri Vernes, the prolific Belgian author of popular French-language adventure and science fiction novels, has died at the age of 102, his publisher announced Monday.

The creator of the French adventurer Bob Morane who featured in 200 novels that sold 40 million copies worldwide died on Sunday, his publisher Lombard said.&nbsp;

"I would love to write a hundred more books, woo a few women and leave the rest to chance," Vernes told Belgium's French-language broadcaster RTBF for his 100th birthday.

Jacky Legge, curator at the Folklore Museum in Tournai which set up a permanent exhibition after his 100th birthday, said he was amazed at Verne's powerful memory, grasp of detail and passion for telling stories.

"It was what surprised me each time I saw him," said Legge, who added that Vernes died as a result of general decline.

While a journalist in Paris in the years after World War II, Vernes was asked in 1953 by publishing house Marabout to write a book series for young people.

Thus was born the steely-eyed Bob Morane, a 33-year-old multi-lingual Frenchman, specialist in martial arts and former war hero who took on pirates, space monsters, Miss Ylang-Ylang and the "Yellow Shadow."

He also created his sidekick, a giant red-haired Scotsman and whisky lover named Bill Ballantine.

Starting in the 1960s, the author adapted his own novels into comic books series illustrated by fellow Belgian Gerald Forton. His work was also translated into other languages including Russian and Japanese.

The French rock group Indochine paid tribute to Bob Morane in its 1982 hit "L'Aventurier."&nbsp;

He was born Charles-Henri Dewisme on October 16, 1918 in Ath, in the French-speaking region of Wallonia.&nbsp;

At 18 years, he avoided study with the jesuits in Tournai and travelled the world, including China.

Upon returning to Europe, he worked for the Belgian and British secret services during the war years before becoming a journalist in Paris.

"I hung out in Saint-Germain-des-Pres and I danced with (singer and actress) Juliette Greco. It didn't go any further than that," he said jokingly.
