The military instructors from France who are training soldiers in Ukraine would be a lawful target for Russian strikes, Moscow said on Tuesday (June 4).

Russia’s statement came amid reports that France could send trainers to Ukraine. However, France does not officially have military personnel assisting Ukraine at the moment, but Kyiv stated recently, it was in talks with Paris on the issue.

"Whoever they are labelled as, whether they are members of the French armed forces or are just mercenaries, they are an absolutely legitimate target for our armed forces," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a news conference.

When questioned about targeting foreign instructors in Ukraine, the Kremlin offered no assurances.

"Any trainers who are engaged in training the Ukrainian regime will not have any immunity and It does not matter whether they are French or not," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Last week, Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrsky announced that French military instructors would arrive soon in the country, however, Ukraine's defence ministry retracted the claim.

Notably, posters were seen on a bus stop outside the French embassy in Moscow on Tuesday, that read, "French, do not repeat the mistakes of your ancestors."

The poster featured a black-and-white photo of a soldier in a beret with a French tricolour on his arm, and claimed it represented a Frenchman who had fought "against Russia on the side of the Nazis".

Moscow has repeatedly made baseless claims that the regime in Kyiv is neo-Nazi, asserting that it is fighting to liberate Ukraine from fascism. These narratives are rejected by both Kyiv and the West.

It is worth mentioning that French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to rule out deploying troops to Ukraine despite unwillingness from other NATO members and condemnation from Moscow.

Russia has warned against such a move, arguing it would dramatically escalate the conflict.

Russia has repeatedly vowed to destroy Western military hardware sent to the country.

Ukrainian forces on Monday (June 3) stated that they have successfully struck a Russian S-300 missile system with the help of Western-supplied weapons in the Russian territory.

“It burns beautifully. It’s a Russian S-300. On Russian territory. The first days after permission to use Western weapons on enemy territory,” Ukrainian government minister Iryna Vereshchuk wrote on Facebook while sharing the picture which showed the strike.

The Ukrainian strikes took place days after United States President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to carry out limited strikes while making use of US weapons in Russian territory near Kharkiv.

Notably, posters were seen on a bus stop outside the French embassy in Moscow on Tuesday, that read, "French, do not repeat the mistakes of your ancestors." The poster featured a black-and-white photo of a soldier in a beret with a French tricolour on his arm, and claimed it represented a Frenchman who had fought "against Russia on the side of the Nazis". Ukraine strikes Russia with Western weapons Ukrainian forces on Monday (June 3) stated that they have successfully struck a Russian S-300 missile system with the help of Western-supplied weapons in the Russian territory. France is investigating suspected Russian interference after five full-sized coffins covered with the French tricolour were found at the Eiffel Tower over the weekend. Three people were arrested on Monday (Jun 3) after the coffins with the words “French soldiers from Ukraine” written on them were found near the Eiffel Tower.

What we know about the incident

Three men were seen arriving in a van near the Eiffel Tower around 9:00 am (local time) on Saturday (Jun 1). The police later found coffins allegedly placed by them containing sacks of plaster.

The three men were formally put under investigation on Monday. Each of the coffins, as per reports, was inscribed with the words “French soldiers in the Ukraine”.

It is believed that the inscription is referring to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement who raised the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia. Moscow has since called the suggestion “dangerous”. Media reports citing sources suggested that Paris will soon send military trainers to Kyiv.

The French police quickly arrested the driver allegedly involved in the incident who said that he had been paid around $44 by two others to transport the coffins. He told the police he had arrived in Paris only the day before from Bulgaria.

The two others were later found at Bercy coach station in central Paris where they were reportedly planning to take a bus to Berlin.

The duo reportedly told the police that they had been paid around $436 to leave the coffins. The two suspects – a German and a Ukrainian – had travelled to France separately.

A report by French newspaper Le Monde citing a memo from the French domestic intelligence service, the DGSE, suggested the operation was coordinated by the Russian intelligence agency, FSB.

Le Monde citing security sources also said that the three men had been in contact with a man suspected of having sprayed red hands on the Paris Shoah Memorial, a Holocaust museum, last month.

Zelensky’s visit

The incident near the Eiffel Tower took place days before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was due in France for the 80th anniversary of D-day which will take place on June 6, when Allied soldiers landed in Normandy to drive out Nazi German forces during World War Two.

The two leaders are expected to hold talks in Paris the next day. Last week, Ukraine’s top commander said he signed paperwork allowing French military instructors to visit Ukrainian training centres soon.

Kylian Mbappe will not be representing France at the Paris Olympics as head coach Thierry Henry named the preliminary 25-man squad without the forward's name in it. Henry revealed that he wanted Mbappe in the squad but Real Madrid made it clear that they will not release their 'soon-to-be-announced' star player for the tournament.

The 25-year-old is widely expected to join the Spanish giants in the coming days following his high-profile departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

"Real Madrid were really straightforward about the Olympics. The last time I received so many rejections was at the university. There have not even been negotiations. You go, you ask, they say no and you leave," said Henry in a press conference on Monday (Jun 3).

Notably, the participation of players in the Olympics depends on the policy of the respective clubs that the footballer plays for.

Teams in the men's competition are restricted to players aged 23 and under, but they can name a maximum of three overaged players in the squad, which means 25-year-old Mbappe could have been included in the squad.

Macron on Mbappe

Previously, French President Emmanuel Macron had hoped that Mbappe's club would allow him to play for the French men's football team in the quadrennial event.

"We are going to do everything (to have a competitive team). I have confidence in the French and European clubs, if I may say so if you see what I mean. We have the Euro before, that's the problem. I think the clubs have to play their part if we want to have a great show," said Macron.

"I have not yet spoken to him [Mbappe] about that, but I hope that his club, in particular, allows it. And the other clubs too," he added.

Mbappe had also expressed his wish to play for the Les Blues but acknowledged that the decision ultimately lay with his 'employers'.

“It's my employer who decides," he had said. "It will be a pleasure to play in them, but if my employer doesn't want to, I will support that decision. I don't think it will take much time to think about it.”

The opening ceremony of Paris Olympics takes place on July 26 when over 300,000 people are expected to watch a flotilla of boats carrying national teams down the Seine River.

France and Germany have said that Ukraine should be permitted to use their weaponry against targets inside Russia from which Moscow attacks Ukraine.

While addressing the media, alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday (May 28), French President Emmanuel Macron outlined that French weapons supplied to Ukraine, including long-range missiles, were permitted to strike targets within Russia.

“Since Ukrainian soil is being attacked from bases in Russia, how can we explain to the Ukrainians that we need to protect these towns and everything we’re seeing around Kharkiv currently,” Macron said.

“We believe that we should allow them to neutralise the military sites from which the missiles are fired and, basically, the military sites from which Ukraine is attacked,” Macron continued.

However, Macron emphasised that "we must not allow them to strike other targets in Russia," including civilian or additional military sites.

Echoing Macron’s comments, Germany’s Scholz said that Ukraine was permitted to defend itself provided it adhered to the conditions set by the countries supplying the weapons - including the United States - and international law.

“Ukraine has every possibility under international law for what it is doing. That has to be said clearly,” Scholz said. “I find it odd when some people disagree that it should not be allowed to defend itself and take measures that are suitable for this.”

Western allies of Ukraine have maintained a long-standing policy that donated weapons should be strictly used within Ukrainian territory.

The issue is a controversial one, with fears from Western leaders that if their weaponry is used to strike inside Russia, it would escalate the violence and trigger a wider war involving NATO.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repetitively asked permission from his allies to expand the usage of the provided weapons to strike inside Russia.

The United States, the largest arms supplier to Ukraine, has previously prohibited Kyiv from firing its weapons inside Russian territory over escalation concerns.

However, in recent remarks that come into view as a hint -the possibility of a policy change, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday (May 29) that the US would continue to “adapt and adjust” its support for Ukraine.

“Another seal of our support for Ukraine over the last two years has been to adapt as the conditions have changed. Battlefields change. As what Russia does has changed in terms of how it is pursuing its aggression escalation, we’ve adapted and adjusted too. And I am confident we will continue to do that,” he said when asked about the possibility of allowing Ukraine to strike Russian soil.

“"We have neither encouraged nor enabled strikes beyond Ukraine's borders. As I have previously stated, Ukraine must independently determine the most effective strategies for its defense. Our commitment is to ensure that Ukraine possesses the necessary equipment to achieve this objective," Secretary Blinken asserted.

When asked about his remarks about adjusting and adapting, he added, “We’re always listening. We’re always learning to make sure that Ukraine can effectively continue to defend itself.”
