Netherlands and France played out a draw in the ongoing Euro 2024 on Thursday (June 21) but the Dutch coach Ronald Koeman wasn't happy with a goal being disallowed.

The goal in question had happed in second-half, thanks to a strike from Xavi Simons. It was eventually deemed offside and hence disallowed after Denzel Dumfries was seen standing next to French goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

"The position of Dumfries is offside, that's true. But he isn't disturbing the goalkeeper. And when that does not happen then it's a legal goal in my opinion," the Dutch coach said during at the post-match presentation.

"Did they need five minutes to check it because it's so difficult? I don't understand this. He's not disturbing the goalkeeper," he added.

The game ended in a goalless draw but the Dutch coach wasn't much bothered about it instead rather satisfied with the result.

"Although I think that the goal should have stood, my takeaway from this is it is a fair result.

"I can accept this, although there were times during the game where we weren't up to scratch and that's probably due to the fact that we were up against a great opponent in France.

"But we have four points from two games and played against the big favourites. I would have signed up for that beforehand. I'm happy, I don't know about you (reporters)," he said.

"Maybe you'll say the Dutch were boring and defensive, and that is allowed. But I had the feeling France were happy to leave the field with a point too."

Netherlands had won their first game against Poland 2-1 and now with a draw against France, they have four points from two games.

Netherlands play their last group game against Austria on June 25. A win or a draw will all but confirm a place for them in Round of 16.

Two teenage French boys were charged with sexual assault of a 12-year-old Jewish girl they reportedly described as "dirty jew" in a stark cast from the past of the country's anti-jew record during the second world war. The incident spark widespread outrage across France and Jewish groups took to the streets to protest rising antisemitism.

President Emmanuel consequently acknowledged that schools in France are being threatened by the "scourge of antisemitism" as the police said that the incident was indeed a hate crime. The French president, currently campaigning for the snap polls announced in response to his party's trouncing in European Parliament elections, tasked his education minister Nicole Belloubet with ensuring sensitisation in schools about antisemitism.

"The horror has no limits. Rape, antisemitism: Everything is abominable in this crime committed in Courbevoie against a 12-year-old girl," Belloubet wrote on X, formerly Twitter. She added, "Justice, School, Republic: a single response against barbarism."

France: Emmanuel Macron faces transphobia accusations

With the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, the world already witnessed how fault lines that existed for a long time between different power blocs bore prominence and continued to shape and reshape. Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, wary of the ever-spreading NATO, announced the ‘liberation’ of Donetsk and Luhansk, two regions in Ukraine bordering Russia.

Further, NATO’s hug to Finland as well as the recent adventurism by the Wagner Group amidst an all-out war, manifested in the coup attempt have only exacerbated Putin’s invincibility in Russia. However, the Wagner crisis seems to be averted for now but whether it will last long or not is yet to be answered.

Albeit the cold shoulder to Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, at the recent 2-day NATO summit, the regular and covert support to Ukraine coming straight from the US and its allies has kept Russians dwindling for a final solution in Ukraine.

In the meantime, the biggest likely gainers are China and, to some extent, India. The pertinent query is whether India decides to yield the space open for China to manoeuvre things or compete with China to consolidate its own position in evolving international affairs.

China arrives with a bang but will the world even whimper?

Beijing has already upped the ante as it has embarked upon several diplomatic actions aimed at toppling the United States from the role of the global peacemaker or the diktat issuer. The signs are worrisome not only for the USA or its allies but also for India which has, though lately, decided to get over its meagre regional credentials and assume a global role.

Saudi-Iran deal: How did China snatch the pivotal position of US?

China recently brought two conventional belligerents - Saudi Arabia and Iran to a negotiation table and catalysed a deal sending worrying signs to the US, a key player in the Middle East. Previously, under Donald Trump’s presidency, the US unilaterally decided to pull out of the JCPOA- Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action- a deal between P5 (five permanent members of UNSC) plus Germany and Iran. It left Tehran with no option but to side with Beijing in the long run.

The Saudi Arabian story also has got the US at its genesis. Before coming to the helm of affairs, Joe Biden vowed to act against the killers of Jamal Khashoggi, a fierce critic of Mohammad bin Salman, the Saudi Arabian prince, and the prospective ruler. Reports allege the involvement of MBS in Khashoggi’s assassination and thus Biden’s election plank seems to have taken Saudi-US relations to a new low. Preying on the evolving equations, Beijing stitched the two Islamic nations with the common thread of anti-Americanism.

Russia- Ukraine conflict: China’s peacemaker moment

Major world powers expect Beijing to rein in Vladimir Putin so that the devastation in Europe gets arrested. In the backdrop of the West galvanising against Russian interests, Chinese influence, buoyed by the humongous economy, appears decisive in breaking the logjam and is likely to play as a saviour of Russian causes. Sanctioned by almost all the advanced economies, Moscow’s markets seek refuge in China’s deep pockets and Beijing in return gets Russia to play the unconventional second fiddle in the Sino-Russia relations.

France snubs US, China ends up with the last laugh

A disappointing end to the France-Australia submarine deal coupled with the formation of AUKUS has contributed negatively to the US-France relations. As the ties between Paris and Washington undergo restructuring, Paris has openly called off ‘USA’s leadership’ in geopolitics. French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China in April this year and his ‘America’s followers’ statement, not resonating well in the US, is a clear-cut sign that France under his watch might not toe the Pentagon’s line and may pursue a foreign policy with an unprecedented sense of autonomy.

India, the only silver lining for the developed and developing world

Well, perhaps the only country in the global south, which has remained committed to its longstanding abhorrence of taking sides is India. With few abstentions in the UN appearing pro-Russian, New Delhi smartly tried to turn the optics in its favour and smoothen its position by providing relief materials to Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Modi’s ‘not the era of war’ remark to Putin resonated well in the Western media giving credibility and contributing to the legitimacy of India’s role as a peacemaker. Nonetheless, Russia too has identified India along with China as its ‘main’ allies in foreign policy strategy.

In China vs Europe, India takes the cake

As China flexes its might in the South China Sea violating the UNCLOS and preying upon regions like Hong Kong and Taiwan; sitting upon the crucial information pertaining to the origin of Covid; unleashing its debt-trap juggernaut to subjugate nations, Beijing falls behind New Delhi in getting perceived with the same degree of trust as India in Western Capitals.
Also, the recent visit to the US by PM Modi and the grand treatment India got prefaces the big game the world is seeking to play with India taking the lead position.

Is India ready to play the leading role?

In order to play the protagonist in the big game of geopolitics, India will have to start from its backyard itself. New Delhi must ameliorate its efforts to become a more reliable partner for its neighbours by sending friendly signals to neighbouring capitals and undoing the strained ties.

The world takes note of India due to its cultural robustness and vibrant cosmopolitanism. Taking India’s acceptance upwards, virtues as such are nowhere to be found in the Chinese discourse. However, along with keeping the heterogeneity of the society and tolerance intact, India needs to consolidate its democratic credentials further.

Despite China’s economic prowess, New Delhi stands out as the ultimate pacifier in the global south. It has a role to bridge the ever-expanding gap between the global South and the global North in the transitioning geopolitics. The strategic balance is well-poised between India and China in the choppy waters of international politics and the world must meticulously choose its navigator.

French film star Anouk Aimée, a popular leading lady for several of Europe's most influential directors, has died aged 92. Aimée appeared in dozens of films across her eight-decade career, including starring in Claude Lelouch's A Man and a Woman, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

Kylian Mbappe could be out until the quarter-final stage of the ongoing Euro 2024 after suffering a nasty nose injury during the opening fixture against Austria on Monday (Jun 17), a report in The Guardian has claimed. France have two more matches in the group stage but Mbappe's absence would mean that Les Bleus will have to dig deep and find solutions elsewhere.

While Mbappe might aim for a quick return to action, the French Football Federation (FFF) is busy sourcing a tailor-made mask for their star player after a surgery was ruled out at the current stage.

“Concerning his participation in the rest of the tournament, it is a bit premature to decide that. The news coming from the doctors is more positive than not and luckily he doesn’t need surgery which would rule him out completely for the rest of the tournament," said FFF president Philippe Diallo on Tuesday.

Mbappe broke his nose after a hefty collision with Austria and Lens defender defender Kevin Danso, deep into the second half with the French side leading 1-0.

After the accident, Mbappe was rushed to the hospital where results showed that his condition was not too serious but might require a significant recovery period.

The newly-announced Real Madrid player looked in high spirits when he took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to look at the funny side of things.

Mbappe jokingly asked his fans for suggestions for what type of mask he should wear the next time he takes the field.

He wrote: "Any ideas for masks?"

Roy Keane slams Mbappe

While fans sympathised with Mbappe for the injury, former Manchester United player-turned-pundit, Roy Keane, was not overly impressed by the French striker's antics.

Notably, after being attended by the medics on the pitch, Mbappe went out briefly as the game continued with 10-men France defending their slender side.

However, a few moments later, Mbappe returned to the pitch and instantly sat down, bringing the game to a halt.

The referee ran to Mbappe and showed him a yellow-card for attempting to slow down the proceedings.

"He gets an injury, obviously it’s frustrating he’s gone back on the pitch. Whether he’s trying to stop the play... but he’s gone on to sit on the pitch. I don’t like to see this, this is out of order. Listen, whether he’s been instructed by the manager to go back, he’s obviously had treatment, he’s come off," said Keane on ITV.

"I don’t mind he’s gone back on the pitch, I know players can make mistakes. But to go back on and sit on the pitch, he deserved that yellow card. I don’t like to see it. No, it’s not (good gamesmanship)," he added.

A Bank of America's survey reveals a concerning trend for France. The fallout from president Macron's decision to call a snap election has made french stocks the least favoured in Europe.

Bank's latest poll of fund managers reveals that French equities are likely to be 'underweight' than any other stock in Europe in the next 1 year. This comes in stark contrast to May, when french stocks were the most popular.

World leaders gathered for the two-day Ukraine peace summit at a Swiss Alpine resort over the weekend slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin and the terms he recently set out to stop the war. Kyiv has sought to use the second day of the major summit to pursue a broad consensus on condemning the Russian invasion and underscoring concerns about the human cost of the ongoing war.

Leaders and representatives from more than 90 countries gathered at the Burgenstock resort in a show of support for Kyiv, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sought to rally support for an international agreement around a proposal to end the war that he could present to Russia.

Ahead of the summit on Friday (Jun 14), Putin slammed the West and accused it of undermining global strategic stability.

He also said that Russia would be ready for ceasefire talks “tomorrow” if Ukrainian troops withdrew from the four regions claimed by Moscow, and Kyiv gave up its plans to join NATO.

“So far, the West has been ignoring our interests. While they forbid Kyiv to negotiate, they hypocritically call on us to start some sort of negotiations. It just looks idiotic,” said the Russian president.

The proposal was swiftly rejected by Kyiv and its allies.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the Russian president’s plan “propaganda” that effectively suggested that Ukraine “must withdraw from Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called it “dictatorial peace.”

The United States, represented by Vice President Kamala Harris – a decision that had riled Kyiv – said that Putin is essentially calling for surrender.

She added, “Let nothing about the end of this war be decided without Ukraine.”

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, on Saturday, said Putin “made a mistake” by not attending the summit considering half of the United Nations was present.

“And the fact that Putin yesterday came out with this silly peace proposal shows you that he is clearly panicking. So that’s good news,” Rutte told reporters.

Kyiv seeks broad consensus

Most countries gathered have voiced strong support for Ukraine and demanded peace, while others have criticised Russia’s exclusion from the summit and warned Kyiv that it might need to compromise if it wanted to end the war.

The summit, which did not see participation from China and was called a waste of time by Russia, comes as Ukrainian forces have faced a series of setbacks on the frontline and the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza has diverted the world’s attention from Kyiv.

A draft of the final summit declaration seen by Reuters refers to the Russian invasion as “war,” a label that Moscow has rejected, and calls for Ukraine’s control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and its Azov Sea ports to be restored.

The talks on Sunday (Jun 16), will be focused on pursuing a joint position on the need for nuclear and food security, and the return of prisoners of war and children removed from Ukraine amid the war.

The draft communique, dated June 13, calls for all illegally deported children sent to Russia and Russian-occupied territory to be returned. It remains to be seen how many countries will back a final joint declaration.

Lionel Messi has clapped back at Kylian Mbappe's recent comments that the European Championship was tougher to win than Copa America. The former Paris Saint-Germain teammates have had contrasting views about the continental championships with Mbappe being a vocal critic of South American football in general. Speaking to ESPN in an interview, Messi gently reminded Mbappe that multiple times World Cup winners were from South America and were not playing Euros. "Well, everybody prioritises their tournament," Messi said. "Obviously, the Euro is very important and has the best teams, but he's leaving out three-time champion Argentina, five-time champion Brazil, two-time champion Uruguay. There are a lot of world champions left off to say that it's the most difficult tournament. "The best teams play in the World Cup, which generally includes all the world champions. There's a reason everybody wants to be champion," he added. Ahead of the Euros that start on June 14, Mbappe stirred up controversy by comparing the competitive nature of the tournament with Copa America. “I consider the Euros more complicated than the World Cup, more complicated to win. If we talk about level, the Euros is more difficult because we are so used to play against each other. Tactically, it is similar football," said Mbappe. Mbappe's previous statement Notably, it wasn't the first instance that Mbappe had taken a dig at South American football for being 'inferior'. In the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Mbappe made similar comments but was made to eat the humble pie by Messi's Argentina in the final. "Argentina haven't played games of great quality to reach the World Cup. In South America football isn't as advanced as Europe. That's why if you look at the last World Cups it's always the Europeans that win," Mbappe had said at the time. Also read | 'He doesn't know enough about football': Emiliano Martinez about Kylian Mbappe ahead of the final Mbappe was slammed even then for his statement with players like Lautaro Martinez and former Brazil coach Tite gently reminding the Frenchman to not make such unfair comparisons when conditions and opposition were starkly different. Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper and hero of the World Cup final said Mbappe did not know enough about South American football to comment. “He doesn’t know enough about football. He never played in South America. When you don’t have this experience, it may be better not to talk about it. But it doesn’t matter. We are a great team, recognised as such," Martinez said.
