It is alleged that the amount obtained by selling these gifts illegally was converted into cash into the ex-president's patrimony by avoiding the formal banking system so that the money could not be traced back to him. The supreme court judge authorised the investigation against Brazil's ex-president, Jair Bolsonaro, on Monday (July 8). Bolsonaro's alleged ties with a criminal group came into the limelight after he was defeated during the 2022 elections against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The gifts sold illegally include a special edition Rolex Watch worth about $ 74,000, a pair of earrings valued at more than $126,000 and a Chopard rollerball pen worth $ 20,000. The rightist politician had spent a considerable amount of time building his image as a law-abiding citizen despite always being allegedly linked to corruption. The evidence collected by the police has proved his link to criminal activities. Bolsonarao said that he was happy to subject himself to a live, two-hour grilling session 'about anything' by the media at a conference in Brazil held over the weekend.
