Just a day after the world's hottest day ever was recorded, Monday, July 22 marks the hottest day on record. The record was based on preliminary data from a European Union monitoring agency.

According to Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's Earth Observation Programme which has been tracking patterns since 1940, the global average surface air temperature has risen to 17.15 degrees Celsius, 0.06 degrees more than that of Sunday's.

The previous record was set in July 2023 when four consecutive days in a row recorded the hottest day. The global average surface air temperature stood at 17.08 degrees Celsius. Before that, August 2016 witnessed the hottest day on record.

"This past Monday might have set a new global record for warmest absolute global average temperature ever — by that I mean going back tens of thousands of years," said Karsten Haustein, a climate scientist at Leipzig University in Germany, as reported by Reuters.

Cities in Japan, Indonesia and China have witnessed record-breaking temperatures in recent days. Gulf countries are also experiencing stifling heat indexes and high humidity with mercury going over 60 degrees Celsius. Parts of Europe have recorded temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.

According to scientists, the reason for these records is climate change which is growing with the burning of fossil fuels. Last year's records were resultant of climate change combined with the El Nino climate pattern, which is the unusual warming of surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean. However, that is not the case this year.

Haustein believes it was "remarkable" that the record is still being broken even though the world is not experiencing the El Nino effect and is in a neutral state.

On Sunday, temperatures touched 37 degrees Celsius in the southwest regions on Sunday before the baking hot air spreads north early in the week.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has formed a crisis team to tackle the drought situation even as scores of villages are forced to rely on water trucks.

This acute water situation has forced state-run nuclear operator EDF to cut water supplies to nuclear power.

Last week, EDF cut its power output at a plant in southwestern France due to high river temperatures on the Garonne. It has also issued warnings for reactors along the Rhone river, reports Reuters news agency.

National weather agency Meteo France has warned that the drought was expected to worsen until at least the middle of the month. It is said that France is facing its worst drought since records began in 1958. On average, less than 1cm of rain fell across France in July.

The heatwave has also taken a massive toll on essential food crops like corn, whose harvest is expected to be 18.5 per cent lower this year compared with 2021, the agriculture ministry has said.

This is likely to accentuate the food crisis in France, which is already contending with higher food prices due to lower-than-normal grain exports from Russia and Ukraine.

Milk will also see a massive shortage in the months ahead as the National Federation of Farmers' Union has said that drought has caused a deficiency of fodder.

Meanwhile, France has imposed water restrictions on almost all of the mainland to conserve water.

The Place de l’Opera is one of many so-called “urban heat islands” in the French capital that lack the trees that can shade cities and cool them down, offering a crucial line of defence against the heatwaves that meteorologists warn are becoming more intense due to global warming.

Le Dantec’s thermometer registered 28 Celsius just a minute’s walk away, in the shade along the Boulevard des Italiens’ tree-lined path.

“Immediately, there’s a bit of a breeze ... You can breathe,’ Le Dantec, who founded Aux Arbres Citoyens, an action group opposed to tree felling.

Paris has a low percentage of green space compared to other major cities. The World Cities Culture Forum reports that only 10% of Paris is made up of green space, such as parks and gardens, compared to 33% in London and 68% in Oslo.

According to the national weather service Meteo France, last month was the warmest July on record in France. The scorching temperatures highlighted the need to improve the capital’s natural defences against climate change.

However, City Hall’s environmental goals have led to a number of demonstrations. Le Dantec and other environmental activists claim that numerous decades-old trees had been cut down by the local government to make place for garden areas.

In reshaping the city’s landscape, the authorities’ own goals are at odds with the removal of mature trees since new saplings are less effective at fending off heat radiation and are more susceptible to drought.

In order to fulfill Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s idea for a “green belt” around the city, Thomas Brail captured video of more than 70 trees being cut down in April on the city’s northern borders.

Paris cannot be remodelled to better combat climate change, according to urban planners at City’s Hall, without cutting down some trees, but Brail disagreed.

“These trees had a role to play (in fighting heat),” the activist said.
