The e-passports are now being distributed in the cities of Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi, and Delhi.&nbsp;
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that this is only the first phase of the nationwide launch. It is expected to be rolled out to all Passport Seva Kendras throughout India by mid-2025.&nbsp;

The newly launched e-passports have an antenna and a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip. This feature makes the passport easily distinguishable from usual passports. It also has a gold-colored symbol that is printed below the front cover.&nbsp;

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday unveiled the budget for fiscal 2022-23, which aims to boost growth amid continued disruption from COVID-19 and rising inflation.

Announcing the budget Sitharaman said that the "issuance of E-passports will be rolled out in 2022-23 to enhance convenience for citizens.".

It is expected that the next-generation passports will ensure the security of biometric data and facilitate smooth passage through immigration posts worldwide.&nbsp;

However, the idea of e-passports is not new, S Jaishankar, the former foreign affairs minister, announced the idea of the e-passport some time ago.

While India does not yet issue biometric passports for ordinary citizens, diplomatic and official passports have been biometrically secured since 2008, when then-President Pratibha Patil was issued the country's first e-passport.

The move will allow India to join some 150 countries that issue biometric passports, such as the UK, Germany, Bangladesh, etc.

The Indian government will start to issue e-passports embedded with electronic microprocessor chip from next year, a report on Thursday claimed.&nbsp;

According to the report by the Economic Times, the government had completed the trial of issuing 20,000 e-passports and now will issue such passports with the help of an agency that will be responsible for setting up IT infrastructure and providing solution regarding the project.&nbsp;

Currently, passports are issued on booklets and with the latest advancement, immigration formalities could be done in a rapid manner and will hit the business of fake passports.&nbsp;

A dedicated unit will be set up with systems in Delhi and Chennai for issuing 10,000-20,000 passports per hour.

The National Informatics Centre, which is working with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for the project has sent a Request for Proposal (RFP) on Wednesday for selection of an agency for setting up an IT infrastructure. &nbsp;

"It will require a completely dedicated set-up and processes for e-passport document issuance. The e-passport has international ramifications because of its usage as credible identity document issued by any sovereign country, it is absolutely necessary to keep track of any security and quality issues," the report added quoting RFP.
