WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREATER SUCTION

What’s a good vacuum cleaner without great suction power? A bad vacuum cleaner. This one comes with a more powerful 240AW motor which is big improvement from the more recent Dyson V15 Detect Slim. The machine is smart enough to do all the thinking for you. Depending on the level of dust and type of flooring, it switches between Eco, Auto and Boost mode.

As someone who relies on Eco mode to conserve battery, I found this feature very handy. For example, pieces of paper were quickly picked up on Eco Mode; sand from my son’s recent art project required a bit of Auto magic. And of course, those stubborn corners can be wiped clean with the powerful Boost Mode.

CHECK ALL STATS ON THE LCD

The LCD is to give us all a reality check about how clean our floors really are. It provides you real-time data about the size of dust particles, the amount of dust captured by the V15 Detect along with the battery status of your vacuum cleaner.

While you may not find this useful after multiple cleaning sessions, since cleaning is a very monotonous process, I suggest you give it a glance every now and then.

We all think our floors are clean. Some of us pride ourselves on maintaining a neat and tidy home. Unfortunately, there’s enough research to show that traditional cleaning methods — especially in South Asia — are unable to keep up with rising dust and pollution.

MORE PORTABLE, BIGGER BIN

My only grievance with Dyson products has been their weight and size. And of course, the price point! While Dyson has given a price bump to its recent offering, it has tried to make up for it in some solid engineering. At around 3 kilos, the V15 Detect is much lighter than the V11 Absolute Pro, the latter, according to me, being the gold standard for vacuum cleaners.

You also get a bigger bin so you don’t have to clean out the dust after a few sessions though I would recommend you eject the dust after every session to avoid that moldy smell that we all run away from!

The trigger button has always been my preferred option than the one-click button for switching on the vacuum cleaner. It’s like playing a video game, an instinctive one, where the cleaner follows the dust and you simply point and shoot!

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE ATTACHMENTS

You buy your first Dyson. You exhale in nervousness as you see the hefty price. You receive the big brown box. You open it and see the multiple attachments promising you the world. You get overwhelmed and shut the box and shove it in a closet.

Stop doing that. Yes, it can be overwhelming at first. But let me be frank, my four-year-old son has learnt how to attach and detach the different heads.

Dyson’s vacuum cleaners come with different heads for different surfaces. The V15 Detect comes with my favourite tool yet — the anti-tangle cleaner head. Its hair removal vanes direct all those strands of hair directly to the bin without you having to dirty your fingers. I used this multiple times and was impressed with the results each time!

The other heads and tools are similar to previous iterations. I find that people avoid using the other tools and mostly use the floor cleaner. I would suggest you give the other attachments a shot. You’ve paid more than Rs 60,000 for a vacuum cleaner after all!

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THE BATTERY

I am sad to report that the battery doesn’t get a major upgrade. Depending on your usage as well as the mode you clean in, your battery will take a hit. A single charge may give you an hour’s worth of cleaning which could definitely use some improvement especially if you don’t want to charge your gadget multiple times and are moving through different floors and surfaces.

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

A Dyson product isn’t for everyone. Let us start with the pricing. Many would balk at spending more than Rs 60,000 on a cleaning device no matter how fancy it looks.

Secondly, the superior technology may overwhelm several people who are comfortable sticking to traditional cleaning methods like using a mop or a dust cloth.

But increasingly, Dyson and other companies have tapped into the market of urban professionals who are perpetually short of time and want to maintain their homes nonetheless.

If you are the latter, Dyson’s V15 Detect checks all the boxes. If you’re willing to dole out the large sum, you will not be disappointed. This is possibly the most portable and effective vacuum cleaner in the market as of now. So if shiny floors at a high cost is your goal, go for it.

It comes with a LCD screen which provides you all-important details about fan speed, filter life, and of course the Air Quality Index or AQI inside the room. You'll be shocked to know that the air quality inside your bedroom isn't great either!

There is a power button to switch the purifier on or off on the body of the TP09 but I would suggest you make use of the sleek remote to operate the air purifier from a distance. Or better yet, sync the device with the Dyson Link mobile application which will help you control your device from anywhere in the house. This worked well for me especially with a toddler running around.&nbsp;

The Dyson Link App is a useful one, especially if you like to control your devices through a common platform. It senses any Dyson product which may be nearby and pairs with it easily in around 5 minutes. From that point on, you can use the app to increase the fan speed, switch your device on or off and even get a sense of the AQI inside your room over a period of time. This will give you an idea of how well the air purifier is working.

Pro tip: take all statistics with a pinch of salt since they may not be 100% accurate. This is the case for all air purifiers across segments.

Dyson's new air purifier uses the company's famous bladeless fan system and comes with a white body with silver accents.

The cylindrical base holds the crucial parts that is the air filters and also houses the display. Before you invest in this gadget, do note that the Hot+Cool comes with a larger 16A plug and you'll need to connect it to a bigger socket. You get a power button at the base and the hatch at the bottom can be easily removed to change air filters.

The display at the base is quite useful since you get to know all about indoor air quality in your bedroom or living area. You can see the fan speed but more significantly, the PM2.5, PM10, volatile organic compound and Nitrogen Dioxide levels. All these parameters are a testament to the grim reality of our times --- where even the indoor quality is not safe for breathing. At most points throughout the day, every time I switched on the air purifier, the air quality remained in the 'very poor' category.

The display also tells you about the remaining life of the air filter which should tell you when you need to change it.

The purifier comes with a matte silver remote which is magnetised and can be placed on top of the air purifier. So, you wouldn't have to worry about misplacing it! The remote can be used to control your air purifier from a distance and performs well. For everything else, I would recommend using the app.

Controlling an air purifier through an app may sound like too much of an inconvenience but in this case, it's quite the opposite. Once you have set up the device, the app offers you useful insight and also allows you to control multiple Dyson devices from one control centre. You can find detailed data about the air quality inside your house. You can also set the purifier to a schedule, activate night mode and even connect the air purifier to other smart devices in your home. With smart homes becoming a reality in urban centres, this functionality will go a long way.

The 'Hot+Cool' feature lets you make the purifier into a heater or a cooling agent. While it does warm up the room well, I wouldn't use this as an air conditioner substitute in the summer months. You can control the heating or cooling through the remote or the app.

With air quality outdoors and indoors deteriorating in winter months, allergies rise, respiratory troubles increase and watery eyes, itchy throats become the norm. So, the only way to test if an air purifier is doing its job is by finding out how effectively it can capture particulate matter and other harmful substances. All this should help you breathe easy.

I put the Dyson Hot+Cool in my bedroom a little before air pollution peaked in North India. My reasons were simple, my husband and I are both prone to seasonal allergies. On the other hand, my three-year-old son has stayed indoors in the pandemic and his exposure to poor air quality has been minimal.

Here's the good news, after placing the air purifier in a closed room, the air quality turned from "poor" to "good" levels in around 40 minutes. If you don't trust the data, here's a personal anecdote. After staying in a room with the air purifier for 4 hours, I stepped out, only to find myself coughing, sneezing with watery eyes.
