McLaren driver Lando Norris on Saturday claimed pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix, pipping local favourite Max Verstappen into second in a thrilling qualifying session.

Norris's McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri will start in third place on the grid on Sunday, ahead of George Russell from Mercedes in fourth.

"We lacked a bit of pace. I'm still happy to be on the front row. It's tricky out there with the wind," said Verstappen.

"I'm happy with second. I think after yesterday, this was a good result," added the 26-year-old.

Verstappen will be competing in his 200th Grand Prix on Sunday but things did not all go his way at his home Grand Prix.

He has never been beaten in the three races held in the Netherlands since it was re-established on the circuit in 2021 and always started in pole position.

But he trailed in fifth during practice, complaining his Red Bull was lacking speed, with no clear path to improving performance.

After winning 19 races on a cruise to the 2023 world championship, Verstappen took seven of the first 10 in 2024, leaving many fearing a similar procession this year.

But he has suffered a lean spell by his own standards, without a win in the last four races -- his longest winless stretch since 2020.

He nevertheless enjoys a 78-point lead in the drivers' championship over closest rival Norris, who has admitted he faces an uphill climb to overhaul the Dutchman.

"I'm not expecting anything easy that's for sure," Norris told reporters after the qualifying.

Verstappen, 25, seeking to match Sebastian Vettel's record of nine consecutive wins on Sunday, was just under fourth tenths of a second quicker than George Russell for Mercedes, with Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull in third.

Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin, and Lewis Hamilton in the other Mercedes completed the top five.

The well-positioned crane, already called into action to remove the cars of Ricciardo, Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg on Friday, extricated Magnussen's stricken vehicle with the action resuming.

It didn't last long though with Zhou Guanyu the next driver to stop the session, his Alfa Romeo coming to rest in safety gravel at turn 13.

"I'm beached guys, it as really wet there," the Chinese driver told his team.

The third red flag of the session came when Alpha Tauri's reserve driver Liam Lawson, called up to replace the injured Ricciardo, ended up facing the wrong way after a spin but the New Zealander did well to just brush the barrier to keep his car going to return to the pits for a mechanical medical.

The green light came on with eight minutes to go,&nbsp;drivers emerging just as the rain relented as the times tumbled and Verstappen rose to the top.

Max Verstappen began his home Dutch Grand Prix weekend in familiar fashion, topping the times in Friday's first practice at Zandvoort. The Red Bull double world champion and runaway series leader is on a quest to draw level with Sebastian Vettel's record of nine straight wins and he was fastest by almost three hundredths of a second from Fernando Alonso's upgraded Aston Martin.

The Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton came next as a trio of champions dominated at the tricky, twisty circuit carved out of coastal dunes near Amsterdam. The old-school track punishes the slightest error and caught out Nico Hulkenberg, 24 hours after the German had signed a new deal to keep him at Haas in 2024.

His accident triggered the first red flag of the weekend as Formula One returned after its summer break for this 13th round of a championship utterly dominated by Red Bull and Verstappen. Kevin Magnussen, also celebrating a contract extension with Haas for next season, was first to set a time.

But the Dane was soon bettered by Verstappen, the home hero reeling off a series of quickest laps. The last one to venture out on the track was Lance Stroll, who missed Thursday's media day with an infection.

But his spin didn't last long with his Aston Martin engineer telling him to "abort, box" on the team radio - his session over before it had even begun. "I heard a funny noise," came back the down-to-earth reply from the Canadian in the cockpit.

Stroll's teammate and elder, Spanish veteran Alonso, found himself in the gravel after a minor lock up. At the midway stage of the hour-long session American rookie Logan Sargeant lifted his Williams to the top of the timesheets briefly.

His more-experienced teammate, Alex Albon, then put in a smart lap to go only eight thousands of a second behind new leader Sergio Perez, both having switched to soft tyres. Perez needs a strong second half to the season after struggling to keep up with his runaway Red Bull teammate.

McLaren approach the second half of the season full of optimism after upgrades lifted Lando Norris to back-to-back runners-up spots at Silverstone and Hungary and rookie Oscar Piastri to a fine second in the sprint at Spa last time out.

Norris though spent a lot of this return from holiday in the pits. The yellow and then red flag came out with 18 minutes left on the clock when Hulkenberg crashed on the penultimate turn 13.

The German came to a stop facing the wrong way, his car craned away. Haas boss Gunther Steiner reported: "It looks like the front wing was damaged, and it was the new front wing and we don't have many of them.&nbsp;

Verstappen took command again, Alonso nipping in to second past Hamilton after a session which left Verstappen's legion of fans expectant that he can win for the third straight time at home on Sunday. Perez ended up fourth ahead of Albon, Norris, Sargeant, Piastri, with Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) and Esteban Ocon (Alpine) rounding out the top 10.

Ferrari reserve driver Robert Shwartzman replaced Carlos Sainz for the first practice staged in muggy overcast conditions, posting the slowest time.

Max Verstappen's home Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort will stay on the Formula One calendar until 2025 after a contract extension was announced on Thursday. The sport returned to the seaside circuit in 2021 on an initial three-year deal but Verstappen's huge local popularity has made it a sell-out event. The 25-year-old Red Bull driver this year became a double world champion and won in front of his home crowd in 2021 and 2022.

Next year will see two Dutch drivers on the grid, with rookie Nyck de Vries set to debut for the Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri team.

"The sold-out events in the last two years have raised the bar in terms of organisation, entertainment, and sustainability, and we are delighted to extend our relationship with them.

"There is a huge demand to host F1 races so it is a testament to what the team have done to cement Zandvoort on the calendar until 2025, and we can’t wait to return next summer."

Tickets for the Aug. 27 race have already sold out.

The Dutch Grand Prix's sustainability efforts mean 99% of general admission ticket holders access the circuit via public transport, bicycle, or on foot.

"It is unique that we are on the calendar with world cities like Las Vegas, Monaco, and São Paulo," said Dutch Grand Prix sporting director Jan Lammers.

"We need and want to put on the F1 event of the future, which is not necessarily bigger but better, more engaging, more innovative, more sustainable, and more inclusive."

Home favourite Max Verstappen snatched the world championship lead from Lewis Hamilton on Sunday as the Red Bull driver claimed a dominant victory at the first Dutch Grand Prix since 1985.

A week after the farcical washout in Belgium, pole-sitter Verstappen controlled the race from the start in bright sunshine at the beach resort of Zandvoort.

His seventh win in 13 races this season turned a three-point deficit into a three-point lead over seven-time world champion Hamilton ahead of Monza next weekend.

Hamilton settled for second, setting the fastest lap on the final lap to earn a consolation bonus point, with Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas a distant third.

Russian rookie Nikita Mazepin accused Haas teammate Mick Schumacher of "cheeky" behaviour at the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday and said the German had shown his true nature by breaking an agreement. 
 
Schumacher, son of Ferrari great and seven-times world champion Michael, suggested the Russian was making a drama out of nothing and he had been cleared to pass Mazepin before his final run. 
 
The spat was another headache for team boss Guenther Steiner, with Haas bottom of the standings and yet to score a point this season. 
 
Schumacher is a protege of engine partner Ferrari while Mazepin`s billionaire businessman father is the team`s title sponsor. 
 
Both drivers were summoned to stewards after qualifying for blocking Aston Martin`s Sebastian Vettel in the first phase, and were eventually cleared of wrongdoing. 
 
Mazepin had already publicly blamed his teammate by then, however. 
 
"He overtook, backed me up, and put me into Seb. I`ll have a word with the team to see why that happened," he told Sky Sports television. 
 
Speaking to reporters later, the Russian felt Schumacher had overturned a team agreement and wrecked his qualifying lap "on purpose". 
 
"I know my place in the team. I`ve got a team boss and I am more than happy to follow the rules because I think it`s very important to be a team. One day the rules will play towards you, one day the rules will play against you," he said. 
 
"What I don`t like with people is when they are cheeky, fighting for P19 (19th place). I think it just shows their true nature and I don`t tolerate that." 
 
Schumacher, speaking separately to reporters, recognised Mazepin was "quite vocal about things in the press." 
 
Steiner said it would not be the last time the drivers disagreed. 
 
"It`s difficult, especially this year with fighting at the back. Your only fight is with your teammate, in our case at the moment. 
 
"So obviously it is a little bit more heated, because the only thing you can win is the team mates` battle."

Max Verstappen put Red Bull on pole position for his home Dutch Grand Prix in front of 70,000 ecstatic fans on Saturday, with Formula One rival and championship leader Lewis Hamilton alongside.

Hamilton, three points clear in the standings after 12 races, was 0.038 seconds slower for Mercedes than Verstappen's best effort of one minute 08.885 seconds around the seaside circuit.

The Briton's team mate Valtteri Bottas qualified third with Frenchman Pierre Gasly fourth for Red Bull's sister team AlphaTauri.

The pole was the sixth in the last seven races for Verstappen, and the 10th of his career.

"It's an amazing feeling of course to get pole position here," said Verstappen as his Orange Army let off flares and celebrated.

"The crowd is incredible and today was also very enjoyable. The car was really nice to drive and this track in qualifying, once the fuel comes out, is really cool."

"He did a fantastic lap and deserves the pole," said seven times world champion Hamilton, as some boos could be heard from the crowd.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz qualified fifth and sixth with Antonio Giovinazzi standing out in seventh for Alfa Romeo.

Alpine's Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso will line up eighth and ninth and Daniel Ricciardo qualified 10th for McLaren.

Williams drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi both crashed in the second phase of qualifying and brought out red flags.

Russell, who started on the front row at the previous race in Belgium last weekend after an astonishing qualifying lap, hit the barriers backwards but managed to keep the car running and returned to the pitlane with nearly four minutes remaining.

The Briton took no further part in qualifying and will start 11th, and when the track action re-started Latifi then lost control and smashed into the barriers in a much heavier impact.

"My tyres were going and I was pushing too hard," said Russell. "I just attacked that corner too much and lost the rear. I'm sorry to the team."

The second stoppage, with a minute and 38 seconds to go, meant McLaren's Lando Norris failed to get in a quick enough lap to go through to the top 10 shootout.

Verstappen's Mexican team mate Sergio Perez and Aston Martin's four times world champion Sebastian Vettel were the big casualties of the first phase.

Vettel, who will start in 17th place, was blocked by dawdling Haas drivers Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher, and the three were summoned to see stewards after the session.

Mazepin blamed Schumacher in comments to Sky Sports television.

"He overtook, backed me up, and put me into Seb. I'll have a word with the team to see why that happened," said the Russian rookie.

The Dutch Grand Prix was set to return to the calendar year of the championship for the first time since 1985. The race was supposed to take place in Zandvoort circuit on May 1-3, followed by the Spanish Grand Prix.&nbsp;

Monaco Grand Prix has been cancelled as the organisers said that the situation was "no longer tenable".

A statement from the race organisers, Automobile Club de Monaco read: "The current situation concerning the worldwide pandemic and its unknown path of evolution, the lack of understanding as to the impact on the FIA F1 World Championship 2020, the uncertainty with regards to the participation of the teams, the consequences with regards to the differing measures of confinement as taken by various governments worldwide, the multi-border restrictions for accessing the Principality of Monaco, the pressure on all implicated businesses, their dedicated staff who are unable to undertake the necessary installations, the availability of the indispensable workforce and volunteers (more than 1500) required for the success of the event means that the situation is no longer tenable.

They went on to apologise to the fans, spectators and partners for cancelling the much-awaited race of the year.&nbsp;

They said: "To all the fans, spectators, partners and our members, the Board of Directors wishes to express its sincere regrets that these two events cannot be postponed and under no circumstances, will it be possible to organize these events later this year."

If the global contagion continues to spread, it could lead to cancelling of the complete championship.
