Double Asian Games silver medallist Dutee Chand will challenge the four-year ban imposed on her by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing two out-of-competition dope tests for a banned substance.

The 27-year-old 100m national record holder was on Thursday served the ban after two samples taken in December last year were found to contain "other anabolic agents/SARMS", which is listed under "WADA's 2023 prohibited list of non-specified substances".

The samples were taken on December 5 and 26 respectively and both returned positive for almost identical substances.

SARMS, or selective androgen receptor modulators, are non-steroidal substances commonly used to treat osteoporosis, anaemia and wound healing in patients.

The ban on the celebrated Indian athlete&nbsp;will be effective from January 3 this year and all her competitive results will be scrapped from the date the first sample collection took place (December 5, 2022).

Dutee's counsel Parth Goswami told PTI on Friday that the sprinter had been a "clean athlete" all her professional career and it was a case of "unintentional consumption". The athlete had won silver medals in 100 and 200m at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and holds the national record of 11.17 sec in 100m (2021).

"For us, this is a clear case of unintentional consumption of a banned substance. We were clearly able to establish the source of the substance in the body, which is a substantial proof of lack of intent. The substance was never used to gain any sporting advantage," said Goswami.

"We are in process of filing an appeal. We are hopeful that we will be able to convince the appeal panel," he added.

"Dutee is the pride of India and is a clean athlete. She has had an illustrious career of over a decade. She has undergone hundreds of dope tests internationally and nationally and has always been clean in her long career," added Goswami.

Dutee and her counsel had also claimed before NADA's Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) that it was a case of "unintentional consumption".

"The athlete and her counsel had without refuting the findings of the NDTL (National Dope Testing Laboratory) report stated that the consumption of the said substance was unintentional and the ingestion of the same had been advised by the physiotherapist who was being regularly consulted by the athlete," said the ADDP order.

"The athlete and her counsels submitted that the said physiotherapist had been attached with the athlete from the Pullela Gopichand Academy where the athlete was training under special permission."

Dutee's counsel had submitted that the sprinter was "hyperandrogenic" owing to which she was having "severe groin pain" because of which the treatment was recommended.

ADDP said that the athlete had "delegated the task of purchasing the drugs to her friend", who was also a witness in the case.

"(The witness) before giving his deposition had submitted an affidavit where he stated that he himself went to the shop to buy the said supplement for hormonal disbalance but, on the contrary, during his cross-examination (the witness) denied buying the said supplement in person but rather re-delegating to his manager," ADDP noted.

"The admitted fact on the affidavit placed before the ADDP and the cross-examination of the witness highlights there are glaring contradictions in the fact put forth before the panel by the witnesses, thereby raising legitimate concerns regarding the reliability of the statements made by the witness," said ADDP order.

Dutee Chand to challenge four-year ban imposed by NADA for positive dope test

South African test cricketer Zubayr Hamza has been provisionally suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) under its anti-doping code after testing positive for a prohibited substance, the cricket governing body said on Friday.

Cricket South Africa said earlier this week that Hamza, who was left out of the squad for the series against Bangladesh, did not dispute the positive test and agreed to a voluntary suspension.

"Hamza has been charged with the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance following the detection of Furosemide in a sample collected out-of-competition on 17 January 2022," the ICC said.

The 26-year-old batter, who has played six tests for South Africa, is suspended pending the outcome of the disciplinary process.

"I am open to any counter analysis in a matter that surprises me, also because - at the moment - I have not received any official communication," Iannone, the winner of the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix, said.

"Over the years, and also this season, I have undergone continuous checks, obviously always proving to be negative, which is why I have every confidence in the positive conclusion of this affair."

Iannone, who joined the team last year, has struggled to match teammate Aleix Espargaro for the majority of the 2019 season.

He finished with 43 points to Espargaro's 63, and his best finish was sixth place at the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

Iannone's positive test marks the first official case of a potential doping offence in the Grand Prix paddock since 2012 when Moto2 rider Anthony West tested positive for methylhexanamine. West had his Moto2 results over an 18-month period voided retrospectively.

If found guilty of doping, a four-year ban on first-time offenders can be imposed on Bhamara.&nbsp;

So far, it is not known whether Bhamara opted for the analysis of his 'B' sample or not.

Bhamara, created history in 2015 when he was picked by Dallas Mavericks in the NBA draft. He did not play any game in the NBA, but went on to play in the National Basketball League of Canada after signing a deal with St John's Edge in September 2018.

Bhamara has also represented in India in major tournaments like Asian Games, 2018 Commonwealth Games, and 2019 World Cup Qualifiers.

The National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in New Delhi has been suspended for up to six months for not conforming to international standards, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said on Thursday.

The suspension, which took effect on Tuesday, prohibits the NDTL from carrying out any anti-doping activities, including all analyses of urine and blood samples.

Any samples not yet tested or undergoing a confirmation procedure will be moved to another WADA-accredited laboratory.

WADA said in a statement that it had found non-conformities with the International Standard for Laboratories during a site visit.

"I explained to them that you don't have discretion, you don't decide whether you'd follow the law or not. The law applies to all uniformly," he said. He made it clear that they could not make an exception for cricket.

Earlier, the BCCI had insisted&nbsp;on handling its doping analysis and sanctions in-house, rebuffing pressure from India's government and the World Anti-Doping Agency to come under the ambit of India's WADA-accredited national anti-doping body.&nbsp;

But the request has been turned down.&nbsp;

"NADA, as and when it wants to test, will carry out the tests like it does with all other athletes," Julaniya said.

"The WADA code gives the authority to the national anti-doping agency to carry out all testing in its territory, irrespective of the nationality of the athletes."

On the decision, BCCI's chief Johri, said, "We have to follow the law of the land &amp; BCCI is committed to follow the law that exists."

"We have raised quite a few issues which the sports secretary said will be addressed by them," he told reporters.

"We have agreed to bear the differential cost of high-quality testing," Johri added.&nbsp;

The BCCI is the world's richest cricket body and generates about 70 per cent of the sport's global revenues.

Earlier, the BCCI had insisted on handling its doping analysis and sanctions in-house, rebuffing pressure from India's government and the World Anti-Doping Agency to come under the ambit of India's WADA-accredited national anti-doping body. But the request has been turned down. "NADA, as and when it wants to test, will carry out the tests like it does with all other athletes," Julaniya said. "The WADA code gives the authority to the national anti-doping agency to carry out all testing in its territory, irrespective of the nationality of the athletes." On the decision, BCCI's chief Johri, said, "We have to follow the law of the land & BCCI is committed to follow the law that exists." "We have raised quite a few issues which the sports secretary said will be addressed by them," he told reporters. "We have agreed to bear the differential cost of high-quality testing," Johri added. The BCCI is the world's richest cricket body and generates about 70 per cent of the sport's global revenues.

BCCI now comes under the ambit of NADA

Indian all-rounder Yusuf Pathan was&nbsp;handed a five-month retrospective suspension for failing a dope test, a sanction which will end on January 14 after the BCCI accepted his plea that the violation was inadvertent.

"Mr Yusuf Pathan has been suspended for a doping violation. Mr Pathan had inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups," the BCCI said in a statement.

The 35-year-old Pathan had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI's anti-doping testing program during a domestic T20 match between his team Baroda and Tamil Nadu on March 16 last year. 
"His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In and Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances," the BCCI stated.

Pathan, on his part, said he was confident of being cleared of deliberate usage and vowed to be more careful in future.

"Competing for India and my home state Baroda has been a matter of immense pride and encouragement for me and I would never act in any manner to bring my motherland or Baroda, in any kind of disrepute," Pathan said in a statement.

"In hindsight, I should have been more careful and checked the status of the medications with BCCI's dedicated Anti-Doping Helpline," he added.

 
The all-rounder, who has played 57 ODIs and 22 T20 Internationals for India, was charged with the "commission of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the BCCI Anti- Doping Rules (ADR) Article 2.1 and provisionally suspended pending determination of the charge".

He has not played for India since 2012 but has been seen in the Indian Premier League, turning up for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

 
"Mr Pathan responded to the charge by admitting the ADRV and asserting that it was caused by his ingestion of a medication containing Terbutaline that had been mistakenly given to him instead of the medication prescribed for him, which did not contain any prohibited substance," the BCCI explained.

The BCCI said it is "satisfied" with Pathan's explanation that was using the medication to "treat an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) and not as a performance-enhancing drug".

"Having considered all of the evidence and taken expert external advice, the BCCI has accepted Mr Pathan's explanation of the cause of his ADRV, and on that basis has agreed that a period of ineligibility of five months should apply, together with the disqualification of certain results," the BCCI stated.

The governing body said Pathan had been provisionally suspended on October 28 last year and the Board has now decided to back-date the period of his final suspension from August 15.

"...There is discretion under BCCI ADR Article 10.10.2 to back-date the start date of the period of ineligibility still further on account of Mr Pathan's prompt admission of his ADRV upon being confronted with it by the BCCI, and under BCCI ADR Article 10.10.1 on account of the delays in the results management in this case that are not attributable to Mr Pathan.

"In all of the circumstances, the five-month period of ineligibility will be deemed to have started to run on 15 August 2017 and end at midnight on 14 January 2018," the Board stated. 
The development comes amid the BCCI's stoic opposition to allowing the National Anti-Doping Agency to test cricketers. The Board has refused to sign up with NADA despite repeated requests by the agency.

Just a few days after wrestlers Narshing Yadav and Sandeep Yadav were caught for doping, another athlete who qualified for the Rio Olympics, shot putter Inderjeet Singh, has failed a dope test. His &#39;A&#39; sample returned positive for a banned substance. 
 
Inderjeet, 28, the reigning Asian Champion, tested positive for a banned steroid and he has been informed by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). His out-of-competition test was done on June 22, sources said.

On Monday, the 26-year-old grappler, who bagged the quota with a bronze medal finish in last years World Championships, tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid on both his A and B samples. 
 
Earlier in the day, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh confirmed that they had named Praveen Rana as a replacement for Narsingh. 
 
However, India&#39;s sports minister Vijay Goel said that as per rules, no player in the Olympics squad can be substituted if he or she has been suspended for failing dope test. 
 
Meanwhile, Narsingh has cried conspiracy, claiming that his food had been spiked. Echoing similar views, the WFI chief had also backed Narsingh&#39;s claims of a conspiracy, after his sparring partner and roommate Sandeep&nbsp;Tulsi also tested positive for drugs. 
 
Narsingh was selected for the Rio Olympics in controversial circumstances as two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar had demanded for trials to determine who should go to the games. 
 
However, Narsingh was favoured for the same after fighting a lengthy legal battle with Sushil. He will appear before a NADA panel on Wednesday in New Delhi for the final hearing.

The global governing body for athletics on Wednesday stood behind its ban on Russia&#39;s track and field athletes competing at the Rio Olympics, effectively leaving all avenues explored in Moscow&#39;s attempts to get the team readmitted. 
 
The decision was discriminatory, amounted to a political campaign waged against Russian sports people and devalued any medals won in their absence, Russia&#39;s President Vladimir Putin said. 
 
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) imposed the ban in November in response to systematic state-sponsored doping by Russia. 
 
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), sport&#39;s highest court, upheld that decision last week. 
 
Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko wrote to the IAAF on Monday to get the ban overturned. But there were &quot;no grounds for further review&quot;, the organisation said on Wednesday. 
 
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected calls to impose a blanket ban on Russians competing at the Rio Games, which start on August 5, after the independent McLaren report found evidence of state-sponsored doping at the Sochi Olympics. 
 
The IOC passed the baton to each sport&#39;s world governing federation to clear individual Russian competitors for next month&#39;s Games, adding that the athletes must have a clean international record on drug testing to be eligible to compete. 
 
Maintaining its ban, the IAAF said the applications by 68 Russian athletes for eligibility to compete in Rio were assessed carefully and individually by its Doping Review Board.

IAAF confirms ban on 67 Russian athletes for Rio

A day after it was reported that India&#39;s Rio Olympics-bound wrestler Narsingh Yadav tested positive for a banned steroid, another Indian wrestler, Sandeep Tulsi Yadav, has failed a dope test conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). 
 
As per reports, Sandeep tested positive for the same substance as the Rio Olympics-bound wrestler. Sandeep Tulsi is Narsingh Yadav`s sparring partner and roommate at Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sonepat. 
 
He is a Greco-Roman wrestler and had won a bronze at the 2013 World Championship in the 66 kg category. 
 
Rio Olympics bound Narsingh tested positive for a banned steroid and is likely to miss the bus for the Summer Games. 
 
NADA conducted a random dope test on Narsingh on July 5 at the SAI&#39;s regional centre in Sonepat.The report of his &#39;A&#39; sample test came out positive. 
 
Later, he was called for his &#39;B&#39; sample test, which also returned positive.According to reports, he had returned positive for methandienone -- a banned anabolic steroid.

Sandeep Tulsi is Narsingh Yadav`s sparring partner and roommate at Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sonepat. He is a Greco-Roman wrestler and had won a bronze at the 2013 World Championship in the 66 kg category. Rio Olympics bound Narsingh tested positive for a banned steroid and is likely to miss the bus for the Summer Games. NADA conducted a random dope test on Narsingh on July 5 at the SAI's regional centre in Sonepat.The report of his 'A' sample test came out positive. Later, he was called for his 'B' sample test, which also returned positive.According to reports, he had returned positive for methandienone -- a banned anabolic steroid. (ANI)
