<p>He also told jurors to apply extra scrutiny to Cohen since he testified that he was directly involved in Trump’s alleged efforts to cover up the payment to Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Even if you find the testimony of Michael Cohen to be believable, you may not convict the defendant solely on that testimony unless you find it was corroborated by other evidence,” Merchan said.</p>

<p>The judge also reminded them that the burden of proof remains on the prosecutor and Trump cannot be held responsible for his decision to not testify in court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“You must set aside any personal opinions or bias you might have in favor of or against the defendant,” the judge reminded the jurors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To convict Trump, Merchan told the jury they would have to come to a unanimous decision. Therefore, even if just one juror refuses to join the others, the judge would have to declare a mistrial.</p>

<p>Steinglass also attempted&nbsp;to rebuff Trump's lawyer's efforts to discredit Cohen's testimony saying his&nbsp;past dishonesty should be taken into account but his anger is also&nbsp;understandable given that, “To date, he’s the only one that’s paid the price for his role in this conspiracy.”</p>

<p>The prosecutor also pointed to other testimonies reminding the jury that Cohen was not the one on trial and&nbsp;accused the defence of wanting to make this case all about Trump's former lawyer.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cohen testified that as Trump’s fixer, he handled the payment to Daniels and that Trump approved the cover-up.</p>

<p>If found guilty, the former president faces up to four years in prison. However, imprisonment is unlikely for a first-time felon convicted of such a crime.</p>

<p>Haley’s U-turn provoked a swift backlash. Sarah Longwell, a political strategist and publisher of the conservative Bulwark website, took to social media and&nbsp;tweeted, “So when Nikki Haley said ‘It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him.’ She really meant, he can treat me and my voters like garbage and I’ll still fall in line and support him.”</p>

<p>Joe Walsh, an ex-Republican congressman, added, “This isn’t complicated,&nbsp;Nikki Haley believes Trump is unfit. And she believes he should never be back in the White House. But if she said that publicly, her career as a Republican would be over. So, as expected, she decided to not be truthful. To keep her career as a Republican.”</p>
