Bangladesh witnessed a sea of people joining the funeral of the popular figure of the July 2024 uprising, Sharif Osman Hadi, in a state mourning on Saturday.

Hundreds of thousands of people joined the funeral of slain political activist and aspirant of Dhaka-8 constituency of the February 2026 election, held before the national parliament in Dhaka.

Hadi, 32, was laid to rest near the Dhaka University Central Mosque, next to the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, whose writings inspired an uprising.

Seven people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, the interim government announced on Saturday (December 20, 2025).

The funeral prayer will be held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building, Government imposed ban on flying in and around the Parliament.

Violent protest erupted in Bangladesh on Friday after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadin. Late night on Thursday, protesters took to streets and attacked several media houses, and political residences. Several journalists were rescued from the angry mob. The protesters attacked the offices of Bangla newspaper Prothom Alo’s office and the nearby Daily Star at the capital's Karwan Bazar, near the Shahbagh intersection.

The death of a 32-year-old, Sharif Osman Hadi, Bangladesh's youth leader, has ignited fresh protests in the country. Hundreds of Hadi's supporters gathered in a square in the capital city to protest with some vandalising the offices of the Bangladeshi newspapers 'Prothom Alo' and 'The Daily Star'. 

It began with an attack on the Bengali-language daily newspaper Prothom Alo, where the crowd had gone chanting slogans before setting the building on fire around midnight.
