The study examined data from over 30,000 adults aged 45 and older, tracked for 11 years.&nbsp;

As part of the study, they were asked to complete questionnaires about their diet and were categorised into four groups based on their consumption of processed foods. These groups ranged from people who ate the most and the least processed foods.&nbsp;

By the study's end, 1,108 participants had suffered a stroke, and 768 had been diagnosed with cognitive impairment, an early sign of dementia. Researchers found that the risk of dementia was 16 per cent higher in people who consumed the highest amounts of ultra-processed foods.

The risk of stroke also rose by eight per cent with increased consumption of these foods, regardless of overall calorie intake. These results were adjusted for other dementia and stroke risk factors, including age, sex, and high blood pressure.

The study suggested&nbsp;that not only were some risk factors more common in ethnic minorities, but they also had&nbsp;a greater impact on their risk of developing the disease compared with White people.&nbsp;

The study showed that 12.6% of the study population developed dementia—16% of White people, 8.6% of South Asian people, 12.1% of Black people, and 9.7% of those from other ethnic groups.

"The impact of hypertension, obesity, diabetes, low HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and sleep disorders on dementia risk was increased in South Asian people compared to White people. The impact of hypertension was greater in Black compared to White people," the study said.

"Analyses using hypertension diagnosed prior to age 60, 55 and 50 all gave the same results as hypertension diagnosed before age 65," it added.

The study pointed out that dementia prevention efforts should be targeted towards people from minority ethnic groups and tailored to risk factors of particular importance.

Scientists have now revealed 11 risk factors for dementia that can help you predict if someone will develop the condition in the coming years.

This comes as experts have forecast that almost triple to 153 million people by 2050 will be living with dementia globally. However, according to them, almost 40 per cent of cases can be reversed if they target key factors including lifestyle changes like losing weight, reduced alcohol consumption and smoking, the Guardian reported.&nbsp;

The findings were published in the journal BMJ Mental Health. The new dementia score drew 11 factors that could identify people who are at risk or are on the verge of developing it during mid-life. The study was led by the Univeristy of Oxford, which examined people aged 50 to 73 taking part in two long-term British studies — the UK Biobank Study and the Whitehall II study.&nbsp;

For the UK Biobank study, 220,762 people around the age&nbsp;of 60 were examined to develop the risk assessment tool while some 2,934 people&nbsp;aged&nbsp;57 helped to validate the Whiteball II study.&nbsp;

The researchers then compiled a list of 28 unknown factors linked to dementia risk and identified the strongest predictors. They produced 11 predictive factors or the UK Biobank Dementia Risk Score (UKBDRS) tool. These 11 factors are age, education, a history of diabetes, a history of depression, a history of stroke, parental history of dementia, levels of deprivation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, living alone and gender.

The scientist also examined a specific gene alongside these risk factors called the APOE gene. They found that UBDRS-APOE produced the highest predictive score of dementia.&nbsp;

They also identified those at risk, and how they can use preventive measures for people to avoid the illness.&nbsp;

Lead scientist, Raihaan Patel said, "The UKBDRS may best be used as an initial screening tool to stratify people into risk groups, and those identified as high risk could then benefit from the more time-intensive follow-up assessments described above for more detailed characterisation."

Furthermore, co-lead and associate professor Sana Suri said, "It’s important to remember that this risk score only tells us about our chances of developing dementia; it doesn’t represent a definitive outcome. The importance of each risk factor varies and given that some of the factors included in the score can be modified or treated, there are things we can all do to help reduce our risk of dementia."

This study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH/FHI) analysed the marital status of people aged 44 to 68 years over a 24-year period. They found that a person's marital status impacts their chances of clinical diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment after the age of 70.

Among their subjects, they found that divorced and single people had a high incidence of decline in cognitive abilities.

Vegard Skirbekk, one of the researchers behind the study, says that this link between dementia and a person's marital status could be about having someone to help you cope with life and its stresses.

Skirbekk says that being married means we are not alone in the face of stress and have someone to talk to and share our burdens with.

This, as per him, helps "you cope better with adversity and as a result, you’re less subject to stress. A partner represents a security that provides a buffer."

Without the "buffer," we leave our brains open to an inflammatory stress hormone called cortisol, which can lead to brain damage over time.

But apparently, this is not the only way a marriage helps you avoid the risk of brain-related diseases. Living with a partner generally helps you develop healthy patterns. As Skirbekk puts it, if a doctor tells you that you're overweight, you can replace them, but "it's not as easy to change your spouse."

SCMP reports that, as per the researcher, "men are probably the greatest beneficiaries of a marital arrangement."

"Since we now know that dementia can begin in the brain decades before diagnosis, it’s important that we learn more about how your habits in middle age can affect your risk of dementia in old age," said Pamela Rist, an associate epidemiologist in the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. "The good news is that making healthy lifestyle choices in middle age may lead to a decreased risk of dementia later in life."

"It can be empowering for people to know that by taking steps such as exercising for half an hour a day or keeping their blood pressure under control, they can reduce their risk of dementia," added Rist.

The number of people living with dementia, which is one of the world’s biggest health threats,&nbsp;is forecast to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050. According to experts, it presents a major threat to future health and social care systems in almost every community and country.

Some Chinese researchers presented similar findings last month and suggested that a combination of healthy lifestyle choices such as eating well, regularly exercising, playing cards and socialising at least twice a week may help slow the rate of memory decline and reduce the risk of dementia.

The US study was conducted among 13,720 women, who were in their fifties. After more than two decades of follow-up, researchers examined the health data and identified those diagnosed with dementia. A total of 1,771 women, which equals 13% of those who participated in the study, developed the health condition.

Susan Mitchell, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, also shared her views about the findings. She said that the study added to the overwhelming evidence that by exercising and eating healthily during middle age, people can reduce the risk of dementia in later life. "Beyond being active and looking after our heart, getting a good night’s sleep, challenging our brain and keeping connected to the people around us can all help reduce our chances of developing dementia," she added.
