IIT-D, AMU & DU websites hacked, displays 'Pakistan Zindabad'

<p>The Indian government Monday released a list of the country&#39;s best educational institutions.</p>

<p>Bangalore&#39;s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) topped the &quot;overall&quot; and &quot;universities&quot; category. Delhi University&#39;s Miranada House was adjudged the best college in the country.</p>

<p>Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) bagged the second position in the best universities category, up one place from last year&#39;s No 3. However, its overall rank is sixth.</p>

<p>India&#39;s Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar said the recognition to varsities such as JNU and Jadavpur University -- which was ranked at No 5 -- was purely for their research and good work.</p>

<p>&quot;JNU and Jadavpur University have not been awarded for their &#39;pro-Afzal Guru&#39; slogans or for keeping their Vice Chancellor under siege but for their academic credentials and excellent research,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Hyderabad University, which was at the fourth position last year, got the seventh rank this time.</p>

<p>Seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have also made it to the list of the top 10 educational institutions.</p>

<p>The institutions which fared well in the annual national rankings will be provided with more funding, enhanced autonomy and other benefits, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said.</p>

<p>&quot;The educational institutions performing well in the annual ranking will be awarded with more funding or grants, enhanced autonomy and freedom of functioning and various other benefits,&quot; he said at the release of the second domestic rankings under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).</p>

<p>&quot;Policy regarding the same will be announced soon to encourage the spirit of competition and ultimately enhance the quality of education being imparted by the institutions across the country,&quot; he said.</p>

JNU, IISc Bangalore, Miranda House among top 10 educational institutions in India: Report

<p>Delhi University&rsquo;s two hostels for girls have barred the boarders from stepping out on Holi, drawing sharp reactions from students who termed the move as &ldquo;arbitrary&rdquo;. DU&rsquo;s International Student House for Women (ISHW) has said the decision was taken &ldquo;in the best interest of residents&rdquo;.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Residents and female guests will not be allowed to leave or enter the premises from 9 pm&nbsp;on March 12 till 6 pm&nbsp;on March 13. No late night permission will be granted on March 12 and those desirous of playing Holi should go outside the residential block within the hostel premises,&rdquo; the ISHW notice read.</p>

<p>Similarly, Meghdoot Hostel has issued a notice, informing its boarders that &ldquo;the main gate will remain closed from 6 am&nbsp;to 5:30 pm&nbsp;on March 13&rdquo;.</p>

<p>It also barred the inmates from consuming &ldquo;any narcotic drugs in form of &lsquo;thandai&#39;.&quot;</p>

<p>It also advised the students not to return to the hostel late in the evening of March 12.</p>

<p>&lsquo;Pinjra Tod&rsquo;, a group of students who have been fighting against discriminatory rules for girls in university hostels, said, &ldquo;The rise in sexual violence and harassment that women experience on the streets around Holi is barely addressed and instead once again, women are locked up for their &lsquo;own safety&rsquo; and arbitrary restrictions are imposed on their mobility.&rdquo;</p>

<p>The group had last week protested outside the office of the Women and Child Development Ministry here, objecting to a statement by its minister Maneka Gandhi advocating hostel curfew for school and college students &mdash; both boys and girls &mdash; to protect them from their &ldquo;own hormonal outbursts&rdquo;.</p>

<p>Mumbai University is set to be the next flashpoint between the Left and Right aligned student groups, mainly the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi (ABVP) and the Students&#39; Federation of India (SFI) as politics over the upcoming students&#39; union polls hots up. The university on Monday rolled back an 11 pm curfew for women hostellers that the ABVP had agreed to in its negotiations for opening the library 24/7. &nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;Starting March 8, we will not be locked inside our hostels. We will not need the Rector&#39;s permission to go out of campus now. We merely have to fill a form informing our hostel authorities. Anyway, all students sign an undertaking while securing admission that says the university is responsible for their security inside campus, while they are themselves responsible outside,&quot; said Mumbai University research scholar Kavita Ware. Ware is also the joint secretary of SFI&#39;s Mumbai University chapter and a resident of Savitri Bai Phule hostel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ware said that the ABVP had tried to make inroads in the campus using the 24/7 library access issue, but failed to capitalise on it.</p>

<p>&quot;Right now all hostellers and progressives are against them. They are trying to change the culture of Mumbai University.&quot;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Universities based in India&#39;s western state, Maharashtra, are expected go to poll this year after a break of 22 years. The Maharashtra Public Universities Act make student unions and elections legitimate in the state from March 1. The dates for the respective student union poll are yet to be announced. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;ABVP had a settlement with the university for opening the library 24/7 under the condition that women hostellers won&#39;t be able to access it after 11 pm. They were supposed to convert their mess (dining area) into a reading room.</p>

<p>ABVP also proposed a committee comprising parents of women hostellers and professors to decide if women residents should be allowed out of hostels after 11 pm. Given the ABVP&#39;s ideology, it is not very surprising. We protested over the discriminatory rules. Women in all hostels were planning to come out in protest, but a university committee listened to our grievance&nbsp;and rolled back the decision,&quot; said Ware.</p>

<p>Mumbai University is perhaps one of the few&nbsp;universities in the country which does not have a night curfew for women. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the Congress-backed National Students&#39; Union of India (NSUI) wiped out in most campuses, much like its parent organisation, and the Aam Aadmi Party students&#39; union keeping curiously quiet, the Left and Right are fighting it out for control over campuses as evident in Jawaharlal Nehru University, Hyderabad University and more recently the Delhi University&#39;s Ramjas College.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ABVP plans to go whole-hog in ensuring that its candidates sweep the university polls and the efforts are being monitored right from the top ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The logistics are being managed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that leads the National Democratic Alliance that is currently in power in India.</p>

<p>Although the ABVP is hard-pressed to assert each time that it is not the students&#39; wing of &#39;big brother&#39; BJP, clearly being &#39;ideologically aligned&#39; has its perks. The BJP is helping enrollments by mobilising its considerable manpower on the ground.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Left groups, however, believe that it is their work in campuses that will speak for itself. &quot;We have a special focus on Mumbai this time, it being the state capital. Fifteen Left wing students&#39; groups have come together, including the Ambedkarites, to stop the spread of Right wing propaganda,&quot; said SFI&#39;s Maharashtra chapter vice-president Datta Chauvan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reverberations of the Ramjas College violence were felt at Pune University when activists of Left-wing groups and ABVP clashed over a protest organised against the strong-arm tactics of the latter.</p>

<p>&quot;Our five activists were beaten up by ABVP members on February 24. This was to prevent a protest on February 27 against the DU violence. They were even calling up our student activists and trying to scare them on phone. We have registered a case,&quot; said Chauvan.</p>

ABVP had last week objected to JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) student Umar Khalid being invited to a seminar in&nbsp;Ramjas&nbsp;College titled &#39;Cultures of Protest&#39; and then resorted to a violent attack on the seminar venue. They then proceeded to throw stones and threaten teachers even after Khalid and his JNU compatriot&nbsp;Shehla&nbsp;Rashid were disinvited by the college.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Right wing student's group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took out a protest march in Delhi University's north campus today, calling for a ban on "anti-nationals", even as students from around the campus continue their protest against the student body for its violent attacks. The agenda clearly was much beyond Delhi University or academics in its scope and the speakers at the march chose to direct their firepower at the Left wing groups. The protesters chanted 'Bharat Mata ki jai' and carried placards with photographs of the alleged killing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers in the southern state of Kerala. "We are finally witnessing the real face of the Left-wing. These Leftists rape our women in the name of Freedom of Expression in campuses. Take for example, Anmol Ratan (JNU student leader), who raped our women and justifies anti-national activities. We are taught to respect and ensure the safety of women in our society as per the moral values taught to us. But today the way some of our Leftist professors have reacted to the situation, you would wonder as to what influence it might have on our youth? I ask all our citizens and the students in our institution to stand up against these traitors and the ABVP is with you," said a speaker addressing the assembly of about 2,000 in the Arts Faculty quadrangle. Students from Delhi University's law department on Wednesday had approached the Delhi High Court for action against policemen who allegedly assaulted students and journalists at Ramjas College during a protest last week. ABVP had last week objected to JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) student Umar Khalid being invited to a seminar in Ramjas College titled 'Cultures of Protest' and then resorted to a violent attack on the seminar venue. They then proceeded to throw stones and threaten teachers even after Khalid and his JNU compatriot Shehla Rashid were disinvited by the college. A protest march was organised by DU students the next day against the violence in Ramjas College which was joined by Left wing students' groups and students from JNU. The march was disrupted by ABVP activists following which a violent confrontation took place between All India Students' Association (AISA) and the ABVP. Delhi Police had booked Umar Khalid for sedition last year for allegedly raising anti-national slogans in JNU. But they have not filed any chargesheet in the case so far. <p>&ldquo;We are protesting because our views weren&rsquo;t taken into consideration. They decided to go ahead with the decision without even consulting us or the teachers and the non-teaching staff. For the last few days we have been carrying out a peaceful protest. Today, about 300 students entered the Andrews court, breaking a rule that was put in place by our former principal Rev. <p>In its annual budget, the central government announced provisions for more autonomy for educational institutions across the nation and earlier this month the Delhi University formed a committee for its colleges which are seeking autonomy or university status.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Leading colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce, St Stephen&rsquo;s, Ramjas, Hansraj and the ones run by Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee had approached the university and HRD officials seeking greater autonomy and decision-making powers, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last week, the governing body of St Stephen&rsquo;s had called an emergency meeting to discuss the procedure for gaining autonomy, even as the Delhi University Teacher&rsquo;s Association called for a demonstration saying they are &ldquo;opposed to dismemberment and privatisation of DU&rdquo;.</p>

<p>The invitation was later withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the ABVP.</p>

The images of Delhi Police officers beating and misbehaving with women protesters are resonating across Delhi and India and have severely damaged the reputation of Delhi Police. It is a classic case of protectors turning abusers,&quot; said the notice issued to Joint CP, central Range.</p>

<p>&quot;Further, the Commission is aghast to read newspaper reports alleging that Delhi Police claims it does not know who ordered the lathi charge on the protesters. Such statements raise suspicions about politicisation of police and the matter needs to be investigated urgently,&quot; it added.</p>

<p>DCW Chief Swati Maliwal has pointed out in the notice that a similar &quot;manhandling&quot; of female students by policemen had happened last year when they were protesting in connection with the case of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed.</p>

<p>The commission has asked police to respond within a week with information on &quot;number of police officers (male and female separately) deployed in and around Ramjas College for the said protest, names and designations of the Police cops clearly identifiable in the videos and photographs,&nbsp;who were seen punching and manhandling women protesters&quot;.</p>

<p>The Delhi Police had admitted &quot;unprofessional&quot; conduct on the part of some of its personnel during the clashes and suspended three policemen.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Delhi University&rsquo;s Ramjas College had called off a seminar after members from the students&rsquo; union protested the participation of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid. Khalid was booked for sedition last year for allegedly raising anti-India slogans during an Afzal Guru event at the JNU campus.</p>
