Modi said when the government invests in highway projects, ports, railways, optical fibre, and opens medical colleges, it gives strength to traders, small shopkeepers and industries. "Investment on infrastructure attracts more investment."

Developed at a cost of more than Rs 12,150 crore, this first completed section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will provide a major boost to the economic development of the entire region.

Modi said the new section will reduce the travel time between Jaipur and Delhi to half.

The PM said those who travel to Delhi for work can now come back to home in the evening after finishing their task. The PM said that rural 'haats' are being developed around the expressway where the local artisans can sell their articles.

He said the expressway will benefit the Sariska National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Ranthambore National Park as well as cities such as Jaipur and Ajmer.

Rajasthan is already known for its tourism sector and the attraction will increase further with the new infrastructure project, the prime minister said.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Union MoS V K Singh, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other leaders were present on the stage during the function.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar addressed the programme through a video link.

While Gehlot joined the programme from the chief minister's residence in Jaipur, Khattar addressed the event from a function in Nuh district.

Earlier, the PMO said Modi's emphasis on building excellent road infrastructure as an engine of growth, development and connectivity in "New India" is being realised by the construction of a number of ongoing world class expressways across the country.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be India's longest with a length of 1,386 km. It will reduce the travel distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 12 per cent, from 1,424 km to 1,242 km, while the travel time will be cut by 50 per cent, from the current 24 hours to 12 hours, it said.

The expressway will pass through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra and connect major cities like Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara and Surat.

It will also serve 93 PM Gati Shakti Economic Nodes, 13 ports, eight major airports and as many multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs) along with the new upcoming greenfield airports such as Jewar Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport and JNPT port.

It will have a catalytic impact in the developmental trajectory of all adjoining regions, thus contributing in a major way in the economic transformation of the country, the PMO said.

The inauguration was done on the 200th birth anniversary of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati. Its first stage of the expressway is expected to cut down travel time between the capital city and Jaipur to just 3.5 hours. Once the entire route is completed, the expressway will allow a travel time of just 12 hours between the two major cities.&nbsp;

1. The stretch between Sohna and Dausa is 246 km while the entire Delhi-Mumbai Expressway connecting the two major cities of India will stretch 1,380 km.

2. The Sohna-Dausa stretch will become an alternative to the busy Delhi-Jaipur Expressway.

3. The Sohna-Dausa stretch has been developed at a cost of more than ₹12,150 crores.

4. The Sohna-Dausa stretch will cover 160km in Haryana and pass through Gurugram, Palwal and Nuh districts. It will cover 11 villages in the Gurugram district, seven villages in Palwal and 47 villages in the Nuh district.

5. This stretch will be directly connected with the Mumbai-Delhi Expressway, from DND to Jaitpur, from Jaitpur to Ballabhgarh and from Ballabhgarh to Sohna.

This stretch, like the other parts of the expressway, is an eight-lane access-controlled expressway which can be expanded to 12 lanes in the future depending on traffic.

The total cost of constructing the ambitious expressway is more than Rs 1 lakh crore (approximately US$12 billion) and it will reportedly use 80 lakh tons of cement and 10 lakh tons of steel. Furthermore, the expressway is expected to cut at least 850 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and save more than 300 million litres of fuel every year. It will also have multiple animal overpasses making it the first in Asia and second in the world to include such a feature for the uninterrupted movement of wildlife. According to the ministry, over two million trees and shrubs will also be planted along the highway.&nbsp;

The expressway includes two iconic eight-lane tunnels one of which will pass through the Mukundra sanctuary in the Indian state of Rajasthan, while the other four kilometres will be tunnelling through an eco-sensitive zone in Maharashtra’s Matheran. Notably, the highway has also created tens of thousands of jobs for daily workers as well as trained civil engineers.

Recent developments

Last week, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that they will implement the Advance Traffic Management System (ATMS) on national highways and expressways which will include enforcement of speed limits and other regulations for better managing road accidents. Reportedly, the maximum speed on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be 120 km per hour.&nbsp;

The Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway has been constructed up to the Dausa area of Rajasthan, which is only 65 kilometres away from Jaipur. When finished, the route will link Delhi to Jaipur and other cities of the state. The Delhi-Mumbai expressway is 1350 kilometres long, out of which 375 kilometres of the road will pass through Rajasthan, linking seven districts of the state to Delhi and Mumbai. Interestingly, the expressway will also have a dedicated lane for electric vehicles. The road will have CCTV cameras installed every 500 metres and is being built with German technology.

No toll will be charged while entering the road. There will be tolls at the exits though. The toll will be calculated based on the number of kilometres driven. The toll on the Delhi-Vadodra Expressway will cost 0.65 paise per kilometre, significantly less than on other similar routes in the nation. Minibuses accessing the road will be charged Rs 1.05, buses and trucks Rs 2.20, heavy machinery like JCB Rs 3.45, and other heavy vehicles Rs 4.20 per kilometre.&nbsp;

The expressway will start in Haryana at Gurgaon and travel through Sawai Madhopur and Jaipur in Rajasthan.
