<p>In Navi Mumbai, a 20-year-old woman was fatally stabbed on Saturday, allegedly by her boyfriend due to relationship issues.</p>

<p>The police have filed a murder case against the accused, who is currently believed to be evading capture.</p>

<p>On July 23, a 24-year-old woman was killed in her PG accommodation in Koramangala, Bengaluru. The suspect, who had been on the run, was arrested in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.</p>

<p>A total of 1,204 rape incidents were reported last year too.</p>

<h2><strong>Crime against senior citizens</strong></h2>

<p>The NCRB data revealed that 2022 also saw an uptick in crimes against senior citizens in Delhi, with theft being the biggest risk.</p>

<p>In 2022, a total of 1,313 cases were reported against senior citizens, against 1,166 in 2021 and 906 in 2020.</p>

<p>There were 22 cases where senior citizens were murdered and 14 incidents of assault on elderly women with intent to outrage modesty.</p>

<p>According to police officials, most senior citizens who fell victim to theft were actually duped by their domestic help or someone else who worked in their house.</p>

<p>The NCRB data also painted a grim picture of the miseries of Indian farmers and daily-wage workers, with at least 154 of them committing suicide daily due to “family problems” and “illness”.</p>

<p>A majority of farmer suicides were reported in Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.</p>

<p>As per the NCRB data, at least 1,70,924 farmers ended life in 2022, in comparison to 1,64,033 farmers in 2021.</p>

<p>Cities and urban spaces, too, showed a consistent increase in suicides from 2019 to 2022. As per the data of 53 megacities, the numbers increased by 4.6 per cent, 6.5 per cent, 8.8 per cent, and 1.5 per cent in the respective years.</p>

<h2><strong>Safest City of India</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, India's Kolkata city emerged as the safest city for the third consecutive year, recording the least number of cognisable offences per lakh population among metropolises.</p>

<p>The eastern metropolis, which reported 86.5 cases of cognisable offences per lakh people in 2022, was followed by Pune (280.7) and Hyderabad (299.2), the NCRB data stated.</p>

The actress has dabbled in TV shows, has been part of blockbuster Bollywood films and has also worked in art-house cinema. In the last few years, with the advent of OTT in India, Shefali has appeared in some memorable roles and characters on the digital space- creating an impact with each of her outings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an exclusive chat with WION, Shefali Shah opened up about her process of working, her new web series ‘Human’ and how digital has been a boon for an actor like her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Produced by her husband, filmmaker Vipul Shah- who also serves as the co-director of the medical drama, ‘Human’ is a grim story of drug trials that are conducted on unsuspecting humans. Shefali plays Neuro-surgeon Gauri Nath head of a hospital chain in Bhopal. The show also features Kirti Kulhari, Ram Kapoor, Indraneil Sengupta and Vishal Jethwa in key roles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Known to play intense characters on screen, is it challenging to switch off from a character and take up something equally difficult in the next project, we ask. “Not difficult to switch off and on. The thing is I get obsessed with what I am doing. So when I am doing a project, I am completely submerged with it but at the same time when you are playing a character like Gauri Nath, you can't carry her back home with you. I can't disconnect as an actor. As a person I have to disconnect, I can’t carry these characters home.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>‘Human’ deals with drug trials that are conducted on humans and their side effects which often go unnoticed. Shefali admits that when she had first read the story she was shocked. “ I mean I have read about drug trials and have seen a couple of things regarding that online but I did not know the magnitude and the depth of it completely. What happens when a molecular composition is made and till the time it comes to the market- I didn’t know so much in detail. Did not know what extent people can go to in terms of power play and money and greed. So that was a shocker.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Will ‘Human’ make the audience uncomfortable? “Yes, a lot of people will get uncomfortable with the show,” admits the actress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The web series has been directed by Vipul Shah and Mozez Singh who also serves as a writer along with Ishani. Considering there were two directors on board, was it difficult as an actor to work on this project?</p>

<p>“It was exciting to have both directors on board,” Shefali said and added that they were very different in their style of working because they are very different individuals but the two directors were in sync about the show and its script.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Any kind of show or project is a cumulative effort- no one can work individually. They were in sync with what they wanted, how they wanted the show to look like. As individuals they were very different,” said the actress.&nbsp;<br />

&nbsp;Shefali says that post the success of ‘Delhi Crimes’ many middle-aged actresses have aspired to do similar author-backed roles. In the International Emmy award-winning show, Shefali played ACP Vartika Chaturvedi who was investigating the infamous 16 December Delhi gang-rape case that took place in 2012. Shefali says she is fortunate to have got such a powerful role to play at her age.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I know after ‘Delhi Crimes’, people use Vartika Chaturvedi as an example. For an actor of my age - who wasn’t till recently given such opportunities- this was a major role and it has led to more people writing roles for middle-aged women on OTT.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shefali says the advent of OTT has opened doors for women of all ages. “Some of the top shows are women-centric- across the world, and it’s also changing in cinema,” points out the actress.&nbsp;<br />

“We are talking of full-fledged characters who do not have a shelf life or age limit, who can have detailed characters. OTT gives you time to explore and express so much that cannot be done in 2 hrs time on the big screen,” points out the actress who was last seen in Netflix special film ‘Ajeeb Dastans’.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actress, who has worked in all mediums and earned accolades in each of these spaces, says she is a greedy actor. “So many amazing stories I want to be a part of I am a greedy actor.” The actress who has made two short films in 2021 is also keen to direct a feature film in the future.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I want to direct, but I take time to prep. So when I make a film, it will take quite a bit out of me. Right now enjoying this phase as an actor- finally doing the things I always wanted to do. But I will direct for sure.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tweet, which seems to be a sharp attack on the Central government over the present law and order situation in Delhi, comes after bodies of an elderly couple and their caretaker was found with their throats slit at a house in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar on Sunday morning.</p>

<p>Soon after Kejriwal's tweet, Delhi Police responded on the microblogging site claiming that heinous crimes in the city were in fact down by 10 per cent in comparison to 2018.</p>

<p>"No such increase in crime in Delhi. Overall heinous crimes down by 10 per cent this year compared to 2018. Similarly, heinous crimes committed against senior citizens also down by 22 per cent due to preventive efforts of Delhi Police," the tweet read.</p>

<p>Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi also blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party over the rising crime rate in Delhi.</p>

<p>"Law and order situation has dropped to a very pathetic level in Delhi. Nine murders have taken place in the past 24 hours. Also, close to 200 gunshots have been reported in the last 30 days. The BJP and all its elected MPs in Delhi are responsible for this," Atishi told ANI.</p>

<p>"We have given 24 hours time to BJP to explain the responsibilities of the Home Ministry, LG and Delhi MPs. Criminals know that they can easily escape after committing a crime. Now people are afraid of their safety even inside their houses," she added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shefali Shah, who plays DCP Vertika Chaturvedi in the show, says that she took exactly 3 minutes to say 'yes' to Mehta. Shah's character is shown to be in charge of the investigative team that eventually cracked the case and arrested the rapists. Considering the show is based on a real-life incident, Shah says that the team was aware that it had to be approached with sensitivity and a certain amount of responsibility. "When I heard what Richie had in mind, I knew he would treat this with great sensitivity. The incident shook and scarred all of us- something that we will never get over. But Richie wanted to tell what happened after that incident took place, the investigation that followed," said Shah while speaking to WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Calling her director 'benevolent', Shah said that he was clear that he did not want an actress onboard. "Richie was clear that he did not want an actress but a collaborator. He told me that 'I have written from a man's perspective. I need a woman, a voice to bring in the sensitivity.'" The actress said she tried to bring in her own interpretation as to how a female officer would deal with the situation. "We all worked very hard on the script and Rishi is quite open to opinions and suggestion. He is not at all rigid and I respect him a lot as a director."</p>

<p>To prep for her role, she did meet the lady officer on whom her character is based. Calling her inspirational, Shah said that she was kind enough to answer all her queries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Did she ever get emotional or overwhelmed while filming the show? "I was overwhelmed throughout. I think playing Vertika has been the most emotionally consuming role for me. I get emotionally involved with all my characters but this one more so."</p>

<p>Shah also learned a lot from her character of Vertika. "She is emotional just like me but unlike me, she has to keep it under check. She cannot let her emotions cloud her investigations."&nbsp;</p>

Aware that the Police was severely criticised for not amping the security in the capital, Shah says, "Preventive security is not possible always. Delhi has a population of a small country. No one can ever fathom that such a thing can happen until it happens."</p>

<p>The show premiered at Sundance Film Festival where it received critical praises. "When we started filming, we did not know which OTT platform would pick it up. It was only after Sundance, that Netflix decided to release it. I think that way, I'd call the entire team very brave to have agreed to do such a project without knowing if it ever will get a release. I guess, we just wanted to tell an important story and rest worked out on its own."</p>

<p>The actress who rose to fame during her stint on Indian TV in the late 1990s and early 2000s, says that OTT platforms like Netflix have a huge reach which helps shows like 'Delhi Crime'. "There is scope for detailing when one is making a series for the web. Besides I can binge watch. I don't have to wait for another week to watch what happens next."</p>

<p>The actress also feels that the present times are far more open to women-centric content. "Be it films or web shows, I think stories with women-protagonists now are thought of more now that earlier."&nbsp;</p>
