Srinagar: In a significant move to protect Kashmir’s iconic Dal Lake from pollution, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has prohibited the operation of motorised shikaras and fuel-powered jet skis on the lake until further orders, directing authorities to explore solar-powered and electric alternatives. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Justice Rajesh Sekhri issued the directions on Thursday, asking the Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA), the Tourism Department and the police to ensure strict compliance. They are among Kashmir’s most recognisable symbols—one winding through the heart of Srinagar, the other spreading across the city’s landscape, reflecting mountains, houseboats and a tourism economy built around their waters. Untreated sewage, inadequate drainage and rising nutrient pollution are putting growing pressure on Kashmir’s Dal Lake and Jhelum, threatening their ecosystems, livelihoods and tourism-dependent economy.
