An AI-generated video of Apple CEO Tim Cook fraudulently streamed on the company's official YouTube channel on Monday, August 9. The video impersonated Cook and falsely promoted a cryptocurrency giveaway which gained millions of views ahead of the launch of iPhone 16.

The fake livestream promised the viewers to send them double the amount they would send to a "contribution address" by Dogecoin (DOGE), a popular cryptocurrency, luring many to the scam.

People on social media are speculating the possibility that Apple's official YouTube channel may have been hacked. Apple announced on Monday the much anticipated ‘It's Glowtime’ event at its headquarters in Cupertino to unveil the newest series of iPhone, along with upgrades in the Apple Watch and AirPods.

The scammers used social media tools including trending keywords related to Apple and a recent song by British pop singer Charli XCX to push their stream to the top of the search results and seem authentic.

Netizens took to X, sharing the fake AI-generated video which was livestreamed on YouTube. Apple has not given any official statement regarding the incident.

'Tim Cooked Us': Netizens react to fake AI-generated live stream of Apple CEO

A Colorado-based pastor, who reportedly ran a cryptocurrency marketplace with his wife, and defrauded investors of more than $3.2 million, said that "the Lord" helped him in the alleged scam.&nbsp;

Eli Regalado preaches for the online-only Victorious Grace Church. He along with his wife, Kaitlyn Regalado, were slapped with civil fraud charges filed by Colorado's securities commissioner.&nbsp;

The official alleged that the couple scammed the Christian community by telling them that God would make them wealthy if they invested in INDXcoin, which is a cryptocurrency designed by him. They ran the Kingdom Wealth Exchange cryptocurrency marketplace.&nbsp;

The complaint filed on January 16 noted that INDXcoin raised about $3.2 million from more than 300 people who invested in the "illiquid" and "essentially worthless" currency.&nbsp;

As reported in the US-based media, the investigators revealed that Regalados spent at least $1.3 million of those funds on a lavish lifestyle.&nbsp;

They went on vacations and bought expensive jewellery, luxury handbags, cosmetic dentistry, clothing, and items for home renovations. They also might have purchased a Range Rover car using some of the funds.&nbsp;

They had shut down the exchange on November 1.&nbsp;

Regalado released a video statement to his followers last week, saying that the charges that he and his wife pocketed the money "are true".&nbsp;

"Out of that $1.3 (million), half a million dollars went to the IRS, and a few hundred thousand dollars went to a home remodel that the Lord told us to do," he said in the video as quoted by media reports.&nbsp;

He noted in the videos that God appeared to him in a dream and gave him advice on how to run the cryptocurrency exchange.&nbsp;

He added, "What we're praying for, and what we're believing for still is that God is going to do a miracle. God is going to work a miracle in the financial sector. He's going to bring a miracle into INDXcoin."&nbsp;

"Everyone that has come in for money is going to be able to receive money back," said Regalado.&nbsp;

Named “pig butchering”, scammers, under this, pose as long-lost school friends or potential lovers and con their victims by building up trust, manipulating them into depositing their crypto assets into fake trading platforms controlled by the perpetrators.

These bogus platforms are designed to look authentic and make the victims believe that their investments are making fantastic returns, until the scammer swindles all their money and disappears.

The practice has so far been reported in countries like Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, and most recently in US, where officials at both the federal and local levels have made little headway in recovering stolen funds or catching the perpetrators.

According to an FBI report, the name refers to how scammers “feed their victims with promises of romance and riches before cutting them off and taking all their money.”

An August report by Coinbase, a cryptocurrency trading company, stated that scammers slowly work to convince their targets to move their cryptocurrency away from legitimate exchanges and onto fraudulent websites by asking for a large sum of money up front.

In order to convince them to invest even larger sums of money, these tricksters even give their targets a small amount of money, Coinbase finds.

The scammers also devise various ways to appeal to their target’s emotions, such as asking questions like, “Don’t you want to have enough money for your kids?” Jan Santiago, deputy director of Global Anti-Scam Org, told CNBC Make It.

But when their targets attempt to withdraw their funds, they are told to pay a fee before claiming their money. But more often, the scammers disappear with the stolen funds, which are nearly impossible to get returned.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center report states that $429 million was lost to these types of scams in 2021.

But experts believe that one can save themselves from being tricked into investing in fake trading platforms.

“For starters, don’t take investment advice from people you meet on Tinder,” Joshua Crumbaugh, CEO of Phishfirewall and former ethical hacker, told CNBC.

&nbsp;“If the fund/currency/etc. came to you through any form of social media or unsolicited communication, be highly skeptical,” he adds.

He also states that investors should be cautious of higher-than-average returns on investment, “especially if they are able to show you quick returns and you find yourself wanting to invest more money immediately after the initial investment.”

Tens of thousands of people are being targeted by cryptocurrency scammers that have a new target, which is dating apps.

Cons dubbed "romance scams" are skyrocketing during the Covid pandemic when lockdowns sent people flocking to the internet seeking a salve for isolation. So have crypto prices. That has made crypto a useful entry point for criminals looking to part victims from their savings.

The US Federal Trade Commission, tracking scams reported to its Consumer Sentinel Network, said 2021 saw a record $547 million stolen in romance scams. This marked a nearly 80 percent increase compared to the year before.

In comparison, about $121 million was lost through bank transfers or payments and another $93 million through wire transfers in 2021, FTC data shows.

The FTC saw an increase in the frequency of romance-scam reporting across all age groups in 2021, but the most significant increase was among 18-29 year olds, said Fletcher.

Experts believe this particular type of scam originated in China before spreading to the US and Europe. Its Chinese name translates roughly as "pig butchering," &nbsp;a reference to the way that victims are "fattened up" with flattery and romance before being scammed.

Jan Santiago, the deputy director of the Global Anti-Scam Organisation, a non-profit that represents victims of online cryptocurrency scams, said that unlike typical romance scams - which generally target older, less tech-savvy adults - these scammers appear to be going after younger and more educated women on dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge.

"It's mostly millennials who are getting scammed," he said.

Jane Lee, a researcher at the online fraud-prevention firm Sift, began looking into crypto dating scams last year. She signed up for several popular dating apps and quickly matched with men who tried to offer her investing advice.

"People are lonely from the pandemic, and crypto is super hot right now," she said. "The combination of the two has really made this a successful scam."

While awareness is growing -- through support groups, online forums and even a recent documentary on Netflix "The Tinder Swindler" -- many still fall prey to elaborate cons spun to get into a victim's heart.

Scammers, many based in West Africa, will adopt fake identities, often saying they work abroad and travel a lot or are in the military -- providing ready-made excuses for why they can't meet in person.

A period of intense contact is followed by requests to wire money for plane tickets, visa fees, medical expenses or other emergencies -- always with the promise of paying the amount back when they are finally united.

As the Russian-Ukraine war&nbsp;rages on, several donation pages have emerged in the dark web asking for funds in cryptocurrencies for the Ukrainian cause.

Check Point Research, the threat intelligence arm of the cybersecurity solutions provider, has reported that while some are running genuine donation&nbsp;services, many fake ads have flooded the dark web.

The darknet is a part of the internet that is invisible to search engines and can only be accessed through anonymous browsers.

Several prominent organisations like BBC and Twitter have been using the dark web to bring regular updates to Russia as their services have been restricted in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, in the midst of all these, several scammers have been running fake donation camps to collect money with&nbsp;‘Help Ukraine’ advertisements.

“CPR has always taken a close look at the Darknet. Last year, we found advertisements for fake coronavirus services. Now, we’re seeing donation scams appear on the Darknet, as the Russia-Ukraine conflict intensifies," says Oded Vanunu, head of product vulnerabilities research at Check Point Software.

One such ad featured a mother and her children, who were in bad shape and needed money to escape the war-torn country. However, the image was unrelated and was taken out of context from a German newspaper, Vanunu said.

It said that sites such as Defend Ukraine, and an accompanying Twitter account has been found to be reliable.

The website contains a list of organisations and NGOs in Ukraine in need of assistance and solicits donations in both bitcoin and ethereum. It has received over $9m in funding since being registered in February 2022.

Randell said about 2.3 million Britons currently hold cryptocurrency and he said 14 per cent of them also use credit to purchase them - "thereby increasing the exposure to loss". "If you buy them, you should be prepared to lose all your money," he said.

Fake promised giveaways by celebrities such as Telsa CEO Elon Musk are being used by scammers to cash in on interest in cryptocurrencies, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Monday in noting a jump in complaints about cryptocurrency fraud since October.

In one type of scam, people are told that if they give a certain amount of cryptocurrency to a "celebrity" they will get more back.

"People have reported sending more than $2 million in cryptocurrency to Elon Musk impersonators over just the past six months," the FTC said.

Musk had been a supporter of cryptocurrencies but recently knocked dogecoin by calling it "a hustle" on national television. He has also recently said that bitcoin would not be accepted to buy a Tesla because of the environmental costs associated with mining it.

Scammers also impersonate government authorities or a potential romantic partner, the FTC said.

Overall, nearly 7,000 people reported losses of more than $80 million since October, with a median loss of $1,900, the agency said. That's twelve times more reports of scams than the same period a year earlier, the agency said.

People in their 20s and 30s were the biggest victims, reporting losing much more money on investment and cryptocurrency fraud than any other type of scam. Older people, over 50, were less likely to report falling for the scams but when they did the losses were bigger, with a median loss of $3,250.
