South Africa’s Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday released its quarter-four crime statistics for 2020-2021.

In its report, the minister revealed that even though overall crime declined by 8.5 per cent, the rate of murder and attempted murder rose by 8.4 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively.&nbsp;

Cele said 4,976 people were killed in the first three months of 2021, which is 387 more people killed, as compared to the same months in the previous financial year. This includes 24 police officers who were killed.&nbsp;

Minister said Eastern Cape and the Kwa-Zulu Natal provinces were of concern. Both the provinces recorded double-digit increases, standing at 21.5 per cent and 16.9 per cent respectively.&nbsp;

"Unfortunately, 1,327 people died in the places of residence of either the victim or the perpetrator, including the homes of family friends and neighbors. In some instances these people could have had some kind of domestic relationship," the minister said.&nbsp;

Cele added while there has been a decline in sexual offenses cases, 9,518 people were raped between January and March, a decrease of 387 cases as compared to the same period last year.&nbsp;

"The sexual violence melted against women in this country is simply shameful. Seemingly men and children are not spared," Cele said.&nbsp;

The crime rate in Delhi dropped by 42 per cent since March 15 when restrictions were in place to prevent COVID-19 spread as compared to the same period last year, police said on Friday.

According to data shared by police, a total of 1,990 cases have been registered from March 15 to 31 as against 3,416 cases during the same period last year.

There has been a 50 per cent decline in cases related to outraging modesty of women while 42 per cent decline in kidnapping cases as compared to last year during the same period, 64 per cent decline in abduction cases, 77 per cent decline in extortion, 51 per cent decline in robbery, 60 per cent decline in fatal accidents, according to data.

Out of the total 1,990 cases, 53 cases of robbery, 181 cases of snatching, 27 cases under sections of grievous hurt, 55 cases of burglary, 1,243 cases of motor vehicle theft, 66 case of house theft, 72 cases under sections of outraging modesty of women, 150 cases of kidnapping, while 112 cases of accidents with no casualties were reported.

On March 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a complete lockdown across the country for 21 days to control the spread of COVID-19.

42% drop in crime rate since March 15, nearly 2,000 cases registered: Police

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police will now investigate the rape case against self-styled godman Daati Maharaj.

Daati Maharaj has been accused of raping a disciple inside Shani Dham two years ago.

The woman registered the case in Fatehpur Beri police station on Sunday. It was later transferred to District Investigation Unit (DIU).

Daati Maharaj has been booked under Indian Penal Code, sections - 376, 377, 354 and 34.

The woman has alleged that she didn't file a complaint earlier as she felt intimidated by the self-styled godman. She also said she raped repeatedly even in Gurukul Ashwasan, Bal Gram, Sojat, Pali (Rajasthan).

On Monday, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal sought a police protection for the women.

Maliwal wrote a letter to the SHO of Fatehpur Beri police station, requesting him to look into the matter and provide immediate protection to the victim.

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of repeating lies for political purposes, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday challenged him to take part in an open debate with him on the issues of crime, and the law and order situation in Karnataka compared to the BJP-ruled states.

Responding to Modi’s allegations that the law and order in the state under Congress rule had collapsed, Siddaramaiah tweeted: “Crime is not increasing in Karnataka abnormally. PM repeats the lie of increasing crime rate for political purposes.

“I challenge him for an open debate on a single platform on crime and law and order situation in Karnataka viz-a-viz BJP-ruled states.”
