<p>The study was conducted at Bareilly-based Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) and led by Bhoj Raj Singh, head of the epidemiology department at the IVRI. Three PhD students helped him with the research that went on from June 2022 till November 2022.</p>

<p>The peer-reviewed research was done on cow and buffalo urine samples. It found that fresh cow and bull urine contains at least 14 types of harmful bacteria, including the Escherichia coli bacterium. It is known to cause stomach infections in humans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study was conducted not only on cows and buffaloes, but samples were also taken from humans. It found that a “sizeable proportion of urine samples from apparently healthy individuals carry potentially pathogenic bacteria”.</p>

<p>Bhoj Raj advised people not to consume cow urine by assuming that it is beneficial for the human body and said that “the common belief that cow urine is antibacterial can’t be generalised”.</p>

<p>He mentioned that they are studying whether distilled cow urine is free from such bacteria, as claimed by some people. “Some people put forth the contention that distilled urine doesn’t have infectious bacteria. We are carrying further research on it."</p>

<p>Reacting to the study, a former director of IVRI, RS Chauhan said that distilled urine is known to fight infections, improve immunity and even defend the body against cancer and Covid. Chauhan says that the recommendation is to consume distilled cow urine&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study also concluded that in comparison, buffalo urine is much superior and has far better antibacterial activity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bhoj Raj told The Times of India that a statistical analysis of 73 urine samples of cows, buffaloes, and humans found that "antibacterial activity in buffalo urine was far more superior than cows".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The urine of buffalo was significantly more effective on bacteria like S Epidermidis and E Rhapontici,” Bhoj Raj Singh said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, cow urine is widely sold across the country and promises to cure several ailments. However, it does not carry the trademark of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government of India recently invited proposals for research to determine the benefits of cow dung and urine under its program called, SUTRA PIC, Scientific Utilisation through Research Augmentation-Prime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government through its research wants to materialise on the idea of developing prime-products from "indigenous cows-based utility items" like mosquito repellent, floor cleaner, personal care products like toothpaste, hair-oil, shampoos, conditioners, etc.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a release by the government, initial studies showed the effective development of an antidandruff poly-herbal hair conditioner based on cow urine.</p>

<p>The research has been planned with the support of Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR)- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR); Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush); Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).</p>

<p>Project proposals are invited from scientists, academicians from research institutions, academics, grassroots organisations, etc to carry out the research and development (R&amp;D) work, the release said.</p>

<p>However, the idea has not gone down well among the scientific community of the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 290 scientists and academicians have written to the government and expressed their displeasure with the scheme.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An online appeal addressed to the department of science and technology (DST), said, "We, the concerned scientists and science communicators of this country, are extremely perturbed by the recent call for research proposals under the SUTRA-PIC India Program of SEED, DST. This call lists five thematic areas and each of them has its own set of problems."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists went on to say that the present "call for proposals" (CFP) is drafted unscientifically from start to finish.</p>

<p>The appeal suggests that the "document is full of statements prefaced by 'it is believed’' Science cannot presume the validity of beliefs, however, commonly held. Validity has to be put to test, which is absent in the CFP."</p>

<p>"Scientific research on cow products cannot presume the efficacies presumed in the CFP. To begin a project with such presumptions is prima facie unscientific. We regret to note that such a flawed document issued by the DST along with several other bodies of the Government of India will severely undermine the credibility of the Indian scientific establishment," read the online appeal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists also pointed out the difficulties the scientific community has been facing by institutes in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Several important research projects are getting derailed due to lack of adequate funds from the government. Several young researchers, including research scholars, INSPIRE fellows, UGC-FRP fellows, etc. are getting their monthly fellowships inordinately delayed. In such a dismal funding situation, DST actively canvassing proposals under such a dubious scheme is even more infuriating."<br />

<p>The Indian government, which also holds the cow as an integral part of Hindu tradition, has set up a committee to scientifically prove the advantages of cow urine, according to CNN.</p>

<p>Dr Kavya Dashora, a committee coordinator, told CNN that it is known that their urine has &quot;many antiviral properties&quot;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;We just need to scientifically validate it,&quot; she said.</p>

<p>The research team will operate from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and be funded by the government&#39;s ministry of science and technology.</p>

<p>The committee will be formed by the end of February.</p>

<p>The Indian government has been keen to back missions about development of cows. Soon after coming to power, the government launched a Rs 500-crore mission ($75 million) to encourage locally-bred cows over cross-breed variants to hike the output of milk produced.</p>
