The research, led by Dr. Alexander Farnsworth, a Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol, points to a supercontinent that would one day wipe out life from the planet.

According to the study, in the coming years all the continents on Earth, which they say are slowly drifting, will come together to form a single massive landmass, called Pangea Ultima. This will lead to climate change on a huge scale.&nbsp;

Published in Nature Geoscience, it further says that it would become too hot and dry for most life forms on Earth, making it difficult for them to survive.

The extreme heat will be the result of three main factors, as per Dr Farnsworth.

“The newly-emerged supercontinent would effectively create a triple whammy, comprising the continentality effect, hotter sun and more CO₂ in the atmosphere, of increasing heat for much of the planet,” he says.

The continentality effect is when more land area goes away from the cooling effects of the ocean. A hotter sun will happen at some point in the future, becoming brighter and shooting out more energy that will cause Earth to heat up.

The increased carbon dioxide will be the result of widespread volcanic activity due to tectonic movements. “Widespread temperatures of between 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, and even greater daily extremes, compounded by high levels of humidity would ultimately seal our fate,” Dr Farnsworth added.

“Humans — along with many other species — would expire due to their inability to shed this heat through sweat, cooling their bodies.”

It would also become extremely hard for mammals to find food due to the extreme heat and dryness in a majority of areas on the land. Once Pangea Ultima forms, only about eight per cent to 16 per cent of the land be habitable for mammals, as per the study.

The supercontinent is still millions of years away. However, a climate crisis is already looming large over humanity. Scientists say we should remain mindful of the problem at hand.

“It is vitally important not to lose sight of our current Climate Crisis, which is a result of human emissions of greenhouse gases,” co-author Dr Eunice Lo, Research Fellow in Climate Change and Health at the University of Bristol, said.

He added that an "uninhabitable planet" is still 250 million years away, but extreme heat is already wreaking havoc and is detrimental to human health. "This is why it is crucial to reach net-zero emissions as soon as possible.”

Southern Methodist University's (SMU) seasoned palaeontologist Louis L. Jacobs found these dinosaur footprints spread across continents which hinted that perhaps a big family of the predators lived in the Americas and Africa.&nbsp;

“We determined that in terms of age, these footprints were similar. In their geological and plate tectonic contexts, they were also similar. In terms of their shapes, they are almost identical," Jacobs said.

The footprints of the dinosaur found by the palaeontologist belonged to three-toed theropod dinosaurs as well as the ancestors of modern birds.

The scientists said that some tracks may have been formed from large, long-necked herbivores 'sauropods' and herbivorous dinosaurs 'ornithischians'.&nbsp;

“One of the youngest and narrowest geological connections between Africa and South America was the elbow of northeastern Brazil, nestled against the present-day coast of Cameroon along the Gulf of Guinea,” explained Jacobs.

"The two continents were continuous along that narrow stretch so that animals on either side of that connection could potentially move across it," he added.

During that time, this narrow land bridge played an important role in helping animals migrate between the two continents before they slowly drifted apart.

As the continents drifted apart, magma from the mantle came to the centre stage and the South Atlantic Ocean was created.

“The tracks tell us that these dinosaurs were moving through an environment that was changing drastically,” said Diana P. Vineyard, who is a research associate at SMU and a co-contributor to the study.

“These regions, now so far apart, were once part of the same landscape, filled with rivers, lakes, and thriving ecosystems," he added.

Professor Brune and Dr Anne Glerum then ran simulations and noted that the speed of the mantle "waves" moving under the continents was extremely close to the speed of major erosion events that happened in the landscape in Southern Africa following the breakup of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. They added that the Great Escarpments originate at the edges of ancient rift valleys. This led them to conclude that a rifting event also sets in motion a "deep mantle wave". This wave travels along the continent's base at about 15–20 kilometres per million years.

"Much like how a hot-air balloon sheds weight to rise higher, this loss of continental material causes the continents to rise—a process called isostasy," said Professor Brune.

The new study looked into the formation of Iceland, which is situated between the Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.

Till now, it was known that Iceland was formed nearly 60 million years ago when the mid-Atlantic ridge – which is the boundary between Eurasian and the North American tectonic plates - started to fall apart and led to the creation of a hot mantle plume that turned into a volcanic island.

In the new study, the team found evidence which challenged this theory.

The researchers analysed the tectonic plates' movement in Africa and suggested that Iceland and the Greenland Iceland Faroes Ridge (GIFR) have pieces of lost and submerged fragments which belong to both the North American and European continents.

This newly-recognised feature is known as a "Rifted Oceanic Magmatic Plateau" (ROMP) for short.

"I like to think of this concept as the Earth Science equivalent of finding the Lost City of Atlantis; fragments of lost continent submerged beneath the sea and kilometres of thin lava flows," said Dr Phethean.
