India had gone to the International court of justice (ICJ) regarding the sentence announced by the Pakistan military court and got a stay. New Delhi has also confirmed Identity of 5 prisoners lodged in Pakistan jails to be Indians and called for there early release as well.

503 Indian fishermen are believed to be in Pakistan’s custody of which Pakistan has acknowledged the custody of 483 fishermen who are Indian or believed-to-be-Indian in their jails. Since 2014, the Indian Government has been able to secure the release of 1749 Indian prisoners, including 1725 fishermen along with 57 boats.

New Delhi has strongly raised its concern and protested the delay in the informing the death of one Indian fisherman Bhikha s/o Bhagwan in Karachi Jail to the Indian high commission in Islamabad. He dies in early March.&nbsp;

This is not the first case in which delay has been seen regarding informing the death of an Indian fisherman. In the past death of two Indian fishermen — Deva bhai and Nanu Bhai was informed after an inordinate delay.

India writes to Pakistan for consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 396 Indians are languishing in Pakistani jails despite having served their jail terms. It is not clear if these Indians are getting consular access or not.&nbsp;

Under the 2008 agreement between India and Pakistan, both exchange lists of prisoners and fisherman lodged in their jails on January 1 and July 1 every year.

WION reported last month how New Delhi has been engaging with Pakistan on the issue of Indian prisoners and asked Pakistan to repatriate bodies of two Indians from Jammu and Kashmir who were washed away to the other side of the border.

The development comes on the back of another positive development in India Pakistan ties which saw both clearing each other's pending diplomatic and official visas. Both also agreed on the visas of air advisers which had become a thorny issue, after intervention at the high commissioner level.&nbsp;

In December 2018, Pakistan released Indian Citizen Hamid Nehal Ansari after six years in jail. Hamid Nehal was arrested by Pakistani authorities in 2012 after he was found with a fake passport. He had gone to Pakistan via Afghanistan on a fake passport to meet a girl he befriended on Facebook.

It was followed by the release of two Pakistani nationals by India--Imran Warsi and Abdullah Shah. Imran Wari had come to India in 2004 on a valid visa but overstayed after marrying an Indian girl who he loved. He was caught after trying to make a fake passport in Bhopal and released in 2018, after 10 years in jail. Shah, an autistic from Swat District, crossed over to India to meet Shah Rukh Khan in 2017.

India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in October 2017 had suggested that the two sides work together to resolve humanitarian issues related to elderly, women and mentally unsound prisoners in each other’s custody calling for their early release and repatriation.&nbsp;

India followed it up and shared the details of the medical experts' team and the reconstituted Joint Judicial Committee with Islamabad with the request to organise a visit. India has gained consular access to 117 students, out of a total of 129 individuals, detained by the United States on charges of exploiting the US visa system by taking admission in a fake "university". The fake "university" was set up by the US Department of Homeland Security in Farmington Hills, Michigan to nab 8 people involved in a scam.

Indian embassy and consulate officials visited 36 different detention sites across the US to meet the students. Consular access to the remaining students is expected to be granted soon. The Indian mission has already set up a 24/7 helpline to help the detained Indian students.&nbsp;

India is in touch with US authorities both at the "federal and local level" and has called for a "humane and dignified treatment of the Indian students and custom-sensitive dietary and living arrangement for them during the period of their detention".

In a release issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, "Government of India continues to attach high priority to the well-being of the detained students and will remain constantly engaged with the US authorities and other stakeholders to address the issue".

The US State Department had said that all the detained students "knew that the University of Farmington had no instructors or classes" and were aware they were "committing a crime in an attempt to fraudulently remain in the United States".

The detained individuals have been placed in removal proceedings by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) which means they will be deported to India.

Detention of Indian students in US: India places consular request, says 'according highest priority'

Pakistan today once again <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-envoy-to-pakistan-not-allowed-to-meet-sikh-pilgrims-india-lodges-protests-130568">denied the Indian consular team</a> access to&nbsp;Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Punjab province.

On Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) had lodged a protest with the Pakistan authorities over blocking of consular access to Sikh pilgrims in the country.

"A standard practice has been that the Indian High Commission’s consular/protocol team is attached with visiting pilgrims, to perform consular and protocol duties, like helping out in medical or family emergencies. However, this year, the consular team has been denied access to Indian Sikh pilgrims," the MEA had said.&nbsp;

The issue continued to boil on Monday as India summoned Pakistan's Deputy High Commissioner to lodge&nbsp;a protest over attempts to raise the "Khalistan issue" during the visit of Sikh pilgrims in Pakistan.

"A strong protest was lodged at attempts being made during the ongoing visit of the Sikh pilgrims from India to Pakistan to raise the issue of "Khalistan" by making inflammatory statements and displaying posters at various places of pilgrims visit in Pakistan," the ministry said.&nbsp;

A group of 1,800 Sikh pilgrims are on a visit to Pakistan since April 12 under a bilateral agreement aimed at facilitating visits to religious shrines.&nbsp;

The MEA said the Indian High Commissioner, who was to greet Indian pilgrims on the occasion of Baisakhi, was compelled to return when he was en route to Gurdwara Panja Sahib.&nbsp;

"It was conveyed that such repeated attempts by authorities and entities in Pakistan to extend support to secessionist movements in India amount to interference in its internal affairs," the MEA added.

The MEA said such incidents during the visit of Indian pilgrims went against the spirit of the bilateral protocol of 1974 governing the exchange of visits of pilgrims between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Pakistan said the allegation were "baseless". Pakistan foreign office spokesman Mohammad Faisal also said that it was "deeply regrettable that facts in this matter had been completely distorted and misrepresented."

Faisal said the Secretary of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) had extended an invitation to the High Commissioner of India to attend the main function of Baisakhi at the Gurdwara Panja Sahib on April 14 and the foreign ministry granted the travel permission to him.

"However, in the run-up to the main function, the ETPB authorities noticed strong resentment among segments of Sikh Yatrees, gathered there from different parts of the world, protesting the release in India of some film on Baba Guru Nanak Devji," Faisal claimed.

"Considering an emotionally charged environment and the possibility of any untoward situation, the ETPB authorities contacted the Indian High Commission officials and suggested cancellation of the visit," Faisal said. &nbsp;

He said the Indian High Commission officials, after due deliberation, conveyed back to ETPB their agreement to call off the visit in view of such a situation.&nbsp;

"The cancellation took place with mutual understanding," Faisal said, claiming that the facts regarding visits of Consular/Protocol teams on April 12 and 14 have also been twisted.&nbsp;

Asif made his comments to Pakistan&#39;s Geo News.&nbsp;

When he was asked whether the high commission official accompanying Jadhav&#39;s wife and mother constituted consular access, he answered with a categorical &quot;Yes&quot;.&nbsp;

&quot;Had India been in place of us, it would not have given us this concession,&quot; he added.&nbsp;

PTI however reported Indian officials as downplaying the statement.&nbsp;

They said the high commission official was only accompanying Jadhav&#39;s family and that that could not be construed as consular access.&nbsp;

Jadhav is a former Indian naval officer who was arrested from Pakistan&#39;s restive Balochistan region on March 3 last year.&nbsp;

Pakistan accused him of being a spy for India&#39;s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and after a three and a half&nbsp;month trial, a Pakistani military court sentenced him to death on April 10 this year.&nbsp;

India has asked for consular access to Jadhav as many as 22 times and copies of the charge sheet&nbsp;and judgement against him.

Pakistan has so far turned down the requests.&nbsp;

Jadhav&#39;s sentencing was put on hold by the International Court of Justice after India took the case to it earlier this year.&nbsp;

Pakistan accused him of being a spy for India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and after a three and a half month trial, a Pakistani military court sentenced him to death on April 10 this year. India has asked for consular access to Jadhav as many as 22 times and copies of the charge sheet and judgement against him. Pakistan has so far turned down the requests. Jadhav's sentencing was put on hold by the International Court of Justice after India took the case to it earlier this year.
