Days before the commencement of the Parliament’s winter session, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will organise a massive rally Sunday demanding a bill for construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The VHP has been saying that it was confident that the bill will be tabled in the upcoming winter session of Parliament for paving the way for construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

“The ‘dharam sansad’ – a congregation of Hindu priests – at the Ramlila ground today will be addressed by RSS’ executive head Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi. It will be a massive gathering which will change the hearts of all those who are not in favour of bringing the bill for construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya,” VHP’s spokesperson Vinod Bansal said here.

If in any case, the bill does not come in this winter session, then future course of action will be decided at the next ‘dharam sansad’, which will be held in Allahabad on the sidelines of ‘mahakumbh’ on January 31 and February 1, next year, its general secretary Surendra Jain said.

Besides Joshi, VHP’s president Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje and its international working president Alok Kumar will also address the rally, Bansal said, adding that various saints will also address the gathering.

The organisation has been carrying out the door-to-door campaign in the national capital and its adjoining areas for making this rally a grand success.

Over 18 dead in Varanasi after under-construction flyover collapses, several feared trapped

Embattled real estate firm Amrapali group has approached the Supreme Court seeking its permission to rope in other builders to complete its various housing projects and hand over possession of flats to the hassled homebuyers.

The company, which is facing insolvency proceedings initiated by the creditor bank for not repaying the loan, said in an affidavit in the top court that it was not in a position to complete the projects and hand over possession of flats to over 42,000 home-buyers in a time-bound manner and the properties were needed to be developed with the help of co-developers.

It claimed that many firms have expressed interest in taking over and completing these housing projects.

“Apart from the massive inventory which has been sold and is at various stages of development, the ongoing projects of Amrapali group have vacant land available (earmarked for future development) which can be developed with the assistance of co-developers and, subsequently, sold to prospective buyers.

"This would provide for the necessary liquidity and cash flows for payment to the creditors and also investments in projects that unfortunately have negative cash flows,” the company said in its affidavit.

It urged the court to allow co-developers "to come in to construct, develop and deliver homes in certain under-construction projects of the group.”

"The plan will not only provide for speedy construction of houses but would also facilitate and ensure payments to all the creditors, including those who have already approached the NCLT for insolvency proceedings," it said.

A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy had on January 31 asked the firm to submit a comprehensive plan with a time line on how it would complete its pending projects.

It had also asked the authorities of Noida and Greater Noida, Committee of Creditors, the Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) and other parties to file their responses to the proposal submitted by the company.

The bench had said this was a "serious issue" and a "complicated case" wherein it has to go into the details of the money paid by home buyers and the loans and mortgage made to secure that loan.

Amrapali's counsel had said one Galaxy Developers has come forward to develop the flats in a timely manner.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had earlier admitted insolvency proceedings against Amrapali Group and appointed an interim resolution professional to manage the affairs of the company on September 4 last year.

The top court is hearing a batch of pleas filed by flat buyers who have sought quashing of the September 4 last year's NCLT order and said the moratorium imposed under the provisions of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, is violative of Article 14 (equality before law) of the Constitution.

Switzerland opens the world's longest and deepest rail tunnel through the heart of the Alps on Wednesday in an engineering marvel that stands as a symbol of European unity at a time of increasing fragmentation.

The 57.1-km (35.5 mile)-long Gotthard Base Tunnel, 17 years under construction and designed to last a century, is part of a 23 billion Swiss franc infrastructure project to speed passengers and cargo by rail under the mountain chain that divides Europe's north and south.

Typically Swiss, the project that federal transport office director Peter Fueglistaler called "a masterpiece of timing, cost and policy" came in on schedule and on budget.

High-speed trains will whisk passengers in 17 minutes through a passage that took days until the first Alpine rail tunnel opened in 1882. Around 260 freight trains and 65 passenger trains will traverse the two-tube tunnel daily once final testing ends later this year.

The Swiss, as a rule rail fanatics, are throwing a party to mark the event that will draw the leaders of all its neighboring countries in a show of European solidarity.

"It is just part of the Swiss identity," Fueglistaler said of the Swiss fondness for major engineering feats. "For us, conquering the Alps is like the Dutch exploring the oceans."

The tunnel along Europe's main rail line that connects the ports of Rotterdam in the north to Genoa in the south snakes through the mountains as much as 2.3 km below daylight and through rock as hot as 46 degrees Celsius (114.8°F).

The rail route goes over the pass now in a series of loops and tunnels. The new flat route means even heavy trains will need only one locomotive rather than two or three.

Engineers had to dig and blast through 73 kinds of rock as hard as granite and as soft as sugar. Nine workers died.

Swiss voters -- despite opposition at times from the government and parliament -- supported the gargantuan rail project in a series of binding referendums in the 1990s.

Fittingly, the first ones to travel the tunnel at the official opening will be 500 lucky winners plus guests from the 130,000 who entered a ticket lottery for the inaugural trip.

The overall project includes the Loetschberg rail tunnel that has already opened, the Cereti tunnel still being built and renovations to make rail tunnels at least 4 meters high at the corners to be able to handle big freight containers. Work is due to finish in 2020.

The mammoth rail venture is being financed by value-added and fuel taxes, road charges on heavy vehicles and state loans that are due to be repaid within a decade.

Major contractors included Alpiq, Balfour Beatty, Thales and Heitkamp.
