Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to get majority votes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched an attack saying people have rejected his leadership, which is why the BJP failed to secure a majority on its own.

“Modi has broken many parties and now the people have shattered his morale. Modi should resign on moral grounds along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” she said.

While addressing the media on Tuesday (June 4), Banerjee said, “Aap ka magic gya (your magic is gone). You have lost credibility. We want you to resign.”

“I will surely help the INDIA alliance, had discussions with some people. I will try that Modi is out and INDIA is at the Centre. INDIA has got enough votes and it has the capacity,” the West Bengal CM said.

Hitting back, Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell chief, said, “Mamata Banerjee had lost her election in Nandigram to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. Yet, she continued as the Chief Minister of Bengal. She should be the last person to pontificate on ‘credibility’."

Talking about the state, the TMC leader said, “West Bengal was the most tormented state. Atrocities were the worst on West Bengal. On the one hand, there was the CBI, ED, and IT. And a section of the media also worked against us.”

"I want the Centre to clear the dues of every state and restart the central schemes they halted. They should stop using central agencies and manipulating the judiciary. If they don't, there will be a huge movement."

"Protests have already prevented them from entering Haryana, and similarly, they may not be allowed to enter the Parliament," Banerjee added.

According to&nbsp;political experts, the TMC government’s schemes such as the Lakshmir Bhandar to provide financial assistance to women, not only earned the party rich dividends in the assembly but also in the Lok Sabha elections. The assistance was increased from ₹500 to ₹1,000 per month just ahead of the polls.

“The TMC’s main hold is the women for whom the government has floated a series of schemes including financial aid. These schemes include women and girls of all ages starting from a schoolgirl to a senior citizen. There are special schemes for widows,” said a TMC woman minister.

India's main opposition party Congress has called for all senior leaders of the INDIA alliance to remain in Delhi until the night of June 4 or the morning of June 5, reports said quoting sources from within the party adding that the instructions included that should the seat count fall short of expectations, "other options including demonstration/press conference/meeting with the President will be discussed where questions can be raised on the role of the Election Commission."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed support for this call, ANI news agency's Congress sources revealed. According to said sources cited by the agency, a meeting will be held post-election results to assess the situation.

The voting for the 18th Lok Sabha elections concluded on June 1 with vote counting scheduled for Tuesday (June 4).

In a related development, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge&nbsp;wrote an open letter to the country's bureaucracy on Monday, the eve of counting of votes,&nbsp;and urged officers to adhere to the Constitution and serve the nation "without fear, favour and ill-will against anybody".

He also commended the Election Commission, police, Central Armed Forces, District Collectors and volunteers for their roles in the election process.

"Do not get intimidated by anyone. Do not bow down to any unconstitutional means. Do not be afraid of anyone and discharge your duties, based on merit, on this counting day," he wrote.

"We owe it to future generations, a vibrant Democracy and a long-lasting Constitution, as penned by the makers of modern India," he said.

Kharge also urged all bureaucrats to uphold the Constitution and perform their duties impartially.

"Fear no one. Do not succumb to any unconstitutional methods," Kharge wrote.&nbsp;

<h2>'Independence of institutions'</h2>

Kharge also stressed on the importance of maintaining the independence of institutions, referencing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s vision of civil servants as the "steel frame of India."

"In this spirit, we expect every bureaucrat and official to discharge his duties without any pressure, threat, or coercion of any kind from the ruling party or opposition," Kharge stated.&nbsp;

This call to action follows accusations by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who alleged that Home Minister Amit Shah had been intimidating district magistrates and collectors.

"This is blatant and brazen intimidation, showing how desperate the BJP is," Ramesh wrote on social media. "Let it be very clear: the will of the people shall prevail, and on June 4th, Mr. Modi, Mr. Shah, and the BJP will exit, and the INDIA Janbandhan will be victorious. Officers should not get under any pressure and must uphold the Constitution. They are under watch," Ramesh wrote earlier.&nbsp;

INDIA bloc leaders to stay in Delhi for ‘other options’ if seat count falls short of expectations: Report

Raghuram Rajan, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, said that his family does not want him to enter politics.

In a recent interview with The Print, Rajan said, “I have said repeatedly and people still don’t believe me. I am an academic, my business is not kissing babies. I have a family and a wife, who doesn’t want me to enter politics for a good reason. So, rather than enter politics, what I would like to do is help guide where I can.”

On speculation of whether he would join the Congress, he said, “And that’s what I try and do. So, where I feel government policies are going off track - I talk about it.”

When asked about his closeness with Rahul Gandhi and whether he advises the former Congress chief, Rajan said that Rahul is often depicted as someone who doesn’t have the capability to think and lead.&nbsp;

“I think that’s such a wrong portrayal in the sense that you know he’s smart, intelligent, and also brave. I think what people discount - which they should not - is this is a family which has seen the grandmother assassinated, the father blown up,” he said.

“To engage in politics, to be in the midst of crowds - if I had that experience I’d be hiding in a bed all the time. So I think there are a lot of attributes that are commendable,” he remarked.&nbsp;

He further added, “If you look at his record of what he’s been saying on events. I think he’s been right during Covid...(when he said) we need to do more preparation, we need to act early. It was the Congress calling off rallies which eventually led to stopping politicking during the second wave.”

Rahul Gandhi does not have all the answers, Raghuram Rajan said but “he is a very reasonable leader contrary to what has been portrayed. He has strong convictions, you have to debate those convictions if you disagree with them but he’s perfectly willing to engage in that debate.”

The former governor has been critical of some of the Modi government’s policies like PLI scheme and massive investment in the chip industry.

Former RBI chief Raghuram Rajan to join Congress? Reacts ‘My wife doesn’t want me to’

Congress party's youth wing organised an essay writing competition near the accident spot in Pune where an intoxicated 17-year-old brat killed two persons while driving an unregistered Porsche.&nbsp;

More than 100 people reportedly participated in the essay writing competition that had topics such as 'If my father was a builder', 'Ill effects of alcohol', 'Is this administration sleeping?' among others.

The three best essayists got ₹11,000 ($132), ₹7,000 ($84) and ₹5,000 ($60) as cash prize.

The essay competition was a symbolic protest against the initial decision of the Juvenile Justice Board to grant bail to the minor less than 15 hours after the accident on May 19 and asking him to write an essay on road accidents.&nbsp;

The Juvenile Justice Board had asked the teenager, whose father -- an affluent city builder -- moved cities and went incommunicado as the police looked for his whereabouts, to write a 300-word essay on road accidents.&nbsp;

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the INDI Alliance of getting support from Pakistan and jihadis, stating that prayers were being held in Pakistan for the Samajwadi Party and Congress, who were appealing for "vote jihad" in the country.

He further said that the INDIA bloc was abusing him for "opposing reservation on the basis of religion".

"In Pakistan, 'duas' (prayers) are being made for the INDI alliance of Samajwadi Party and Congress. Jihadis from across borders are supporting SP and Congress; these parties are appealing for 'vote jihad' here," PM Modi said on Sunday (May 26) while addressing a rally in Bansgaon.

The Indian prime minister then highlighted the opposition's stance on Article 370 and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and said, "The INDI alliance says they will reinstate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and repeal the CAA, which grants citizenship to refugees. This is exactly what anti-India forces want; why does the INDI bloc want the same?"

He alleged that the grand old party obstructed the progress of India's defence sector and said that the Congress created roadblocks for countries who wished to purchase the BrahMos missiles.

"It won't be long before BrahMos missiles are manufactured in UP. The BrahMos missile is in demand worldwide, but Congress created roadblocks for countries wanting to purchase it. The INDI bloc doesn't want India to become self-reliant in defence or to export weapons; they prefer foreign arms deals that bring them commissions. Under the rule of the previous governments, the farmers here suffered a lot, most of the sugar mills were closed, and farmers had stopped cultivating sugarcane. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the INDI Alliance of getting support from Pakistan and jihadis, stating that prayers were being held in Pakistan for the Samajwadi Party and Congress, who were appealing for "vote jihad" in the country.

This is exactly what anti-India forces want; why does the INDI bloc want the same?" Also read: Mallikarjun Kharge draws parallels between PM Modi and poison; ‘still insist on licking it’ He alleged that the grand old party obstructed the progress of India's defence sector and said that the Congress created roadblocks for countries who wished to purchase the BrahMos missiles. Our government is also filling these potholes of SP," he said. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh by securing 62 out of 80 seats. PM Modi accuses INDIA bloc of getting support from Pakistan and jihadis

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack against the Congress on Friday (May 24) stating that the grand old party allowed the "massacre of Sikhs" and protected the rioters.

While addressing a rally in Punjab's Jalandhar, PM Modi also hit out at the grand old party over its stance on the Citizenship Amendment Act stating that the opposition does not want to give citizenship to the ones who endured the horrors of partition.&nbsp;

"The Hindu-Sikh brothers who were left on the other side during the partition, they are our own. BJP-NDA government brought CAA to give them citizenship. But Congress had a problem with it. They are saying that they will withdraw the CAA if they come to power," he said.

Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday (May 22) asked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda and Indian National Congress (INC) chief Mallikarjun Kharge to issue formal notes to star campaigners to correct their discourse, exercise care and maintain decorum.&nbsp;

The Election Commission asked the parties to desist from campaigning along the lines of caste, community, language and religion during the Lok Sabha election.&nbsp;

The unprecedented orders to BJP and INC came in the wake of the deteriorating quality of campaigning led by some of their star campaigners.&nbsp;

"The second part constitutes a precious heritage of Indian elections and our electoral democracy, which should not be weakened by anyone, including your party," it added.&nbsp;

The poll watchdog rejected Nadda's defence and asked him and his party's star campaigners to desist from campaigning on religious and communal lines almost a month after it issued notice to the BJP president on an opposition charge that PM Modi gave a divisive speech in Rajasthan's Banswara.

It asked him to respond to the complaints filed by the BJP against him and the main opposition party's senior leader Rahul Gandhi regarding their remarks. It asked the opposition to ensure statements are not being made that may give false impressions such as regarding the Constitution of India.&nbsp;

Mani Shankar Aiyar sparks controversy with 'Pak can drop atom bomb on India' statement

India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (May 9) asserted that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power, then it will scrap the Muslim reservation and will increase the reservation of SC, ST, and OBC communities.

SC, ST and OBC stands for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, respectively.

"Congress wants to fight elections by speaking lies. They say that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi comes, he will finish the reservation. Prime Minister Modi has been leading this country unanimously for the last 10 years, but he did not end the reservation. However, the Congress party has robbed the reservations of SC, ST and OBC by giving 4 per cent reservation to Muslims," Shah said at a rally in the southern city of Hyderabad.

"In 2019, the public of Telangana gave us four seats. This time, we will win more than 10 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana. This double-digit score in Telangana will make PM Modi cross 400 seats... Make BJP victorious on more than 10 seats. We will end the Muslim reservation and increase the reservation of SC, ST, and OBC," he added.

India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday (May 9) asserted that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power, then it will scrap the Muslim reservation and will increase the reservation of SC, ST, and OBC communities.

He then took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and said, "In our manifesto, we have given Modi's guarantees and he does what he says.
