The persistence of the disease in Congo is due to the consumption of dead monkeys and rodents, Dr Alongo said. "The residents enter the forest, pick up the corpses of monkeys, bats and rodents which are the reservoirs of monkeypox," the official added, urging those with monkeypox symptoms to visit a health centre to isolate themselves. Fully agree with this! #monkeypox is not mild, we don’t understand why there’s such a large outbreak. It’s also too early to do exclude a different biological trait in this strain: not a lot of sequences, not enough knowledge what the observed mutations mean. https://t.co/1N83t2DhYb — Isabella Eckerle (@EckerleIsabella) May 28, 2022 × The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention announced that in 2022 it has confirmed 21 out of 66 suspected cases of the disease, which is usually endemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa. A spike in monkeypox cases reported in Europe and the U.S. has generated concerns among those countries, many of whom have not recorded a single case of the disease in years. Over 250 cases of the disease have been reported in more than 20 countries not usually known to have outbreaks, the World Health Organization said. Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic. "The biggest challenge that you have with a disease such as monkeypox is that it is uncommon and the perceived risk by the population about how dangerous this condition is has been very low ... that is why ... we have conducted awareness training and advocacy training to increase the level of awareness of health care workers," Adetifa said. Thousands flee Goma after Congo warns of possible new volcano eruption

The United Nations on Wednesday said that the agency was temporarily relocating at least half of its aid workers from the city of Goma in Congo after a volcanic eruption.

The lava from the volcanic eruption reached the edge of Goma and triggered hundreds of earthquakes. Owing to the eruption, over 20,000 people have been left homeless. 40 people are still missing after the eruption as rivers of lava were unleashed.

The eruption has killed 31 people and destroyed over 3,000 homes according to the United Nations. Mount Nyiragongo’s lava stopped just 300 metres short of Goma airport, which is at the centre of aid operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The UN is set to relocate 250 non-essential staff members, along with 1,500 dependents who have been moved to the city of Bukavu, which lies 50 kilometres south of the Goma, according to Diego Zorrilla, the UN’s deputy humanitarian coordinator in Congo.

We don’t have any data to show there’s a major risk for the city," Zorrilla told Reuters. "But we are also in a situation where volcanologists are not calling the event off, so 72 hours after the main event we took a decision to, given the uncertainty, take out people who don’t have a good reason to be here”, Zorrilla added. The UN has thousands of peacekeepers near Goma, who will not be relocated. Owing to the eruption, airports in Goma and Bukavu have been shut down. The ash cloud could contribute to respiratory diseases, according to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Volcanic eruption in Congo leaves over 20,000 people homeless

Repeated tremors shook the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, unnerving families still reeling from a volcano eruption at the weekend that destroyed nearby villages, displaced thousands and killed at least 32 people.

Mount Nyiragongo, one of the world's most active and dangerous volcanoes, erupted on Saturday evening, sending a smouldering wall of lava half a mile wide downhill towards the city of two million people.

The lava flow stopped a few hundred metres short of the city limits, but wrecked 17 villages on the way, cut the principal electricity supply and blocked a major road, disrupting aid deliveries.

The death toll rose to 32 on Monday, including seven killed by lava, three by smoke, two asphyxiated by volcanic gas and four who died while trying to escape Munzenze prison in Goma, said Joseph Makundi, the head of civil defence in North Kivu province.

A string of small earthquakes has since struck the city, the surrounding region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and across the border into Rwanda.
