India's top gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been forced out of the coming Commonwealth Games owing to the career-threatening knee injury she picked up last year, her coach Bisweshwar Nandi said on Tuesday.

"She is not yet ready for a tournament like the Commonwealth Games. So, the target is to make her fully ready for the Asian Games (August 18-September 2)," Nandi told PTI.

Karmakar, the first Indian female to compete in the Olympics where she finished a historic fourth in the women's vault at the 2016 Rio Games, opted out of the CWG trials taking place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here.

The Gold Coast Games take place from April 4-15.

"She is fit but needs more time to be competition-ready. I would not call it a setback and she has taken it very sportingly," added the coach.

The 24-year-old had undergone an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery in April last year and is continuing to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process. She has, however, started training, according to Nandi.

The nature of the injury, which she picked up during a training camp, has not allowed her to compete since the Rio Olympics.

Dipa had scripted history at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in gymnastics in the mega-event.

Karmakar had also secured a bronze in the 2015 Asian Championships.

Hockey skipper Manpreet Singh feels the season-opening Four Nations Invitational Tour in New Zealand will set the pace for a hectic season and give impetus to India's goal of clinching the coveted gold at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The Indian Men's Hockey team left for New Zealand this morning to play two separate five-day series against Belgium, New Zealand and Japan starting on January 17 at Tauranga and Hamilton.

With a young team that features four debutants, Manpreet stressed the importance of this tournament.

"It is always good to start the season with some good matches against top teams. We have Belgium in our pool in the World Cup this year and as many matches, we play against them, the better for us," he said on the eve of their departure.

"With teams like New Zealand and Japan in the fray, this tour will certainly help us in our preparations for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games," expressed the 25-year-old midfielder.

Looking back at the Odisha Hockey World League Final, Manpreet said doing well against teams like Australia, Belgium and Germany has instilled a new confidence in the team.

"It was very important to do well against these tops teams in a big event. Earlier, somewhere at the back of our minds, we lacked the confidence that we can do well against higher ranked teams but now we don't doubt our abilities against top teams and play with the belief that we can win against them," he said.

"We were the youngest team in the tournament and how we played instils new confidence in the minds of the youngsters."

With major events lined-up this year starting with the Commonwealth Games, Champions Trophy, Asian Games, Asian Champions Trophy and the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup, the team will be put through testing times.
Manpreet is certain of the team's realistic goals.

"After the HWL Final, we recognized some of the areas that we were lacking in. We knew we can do better in defence, man-to-man marking in the circle and we did work on that in this camp," he said.

"There is no doubt we are approaching this year with clear goals of winning in the CWG and defending our Gold Medal at the Asian Games. And it is important we convert our weaknesses into our strength before entering these major events."

The team will begin their campaign in New Zealand on January 17 against Japan at 10.15 IST.

Birmingham to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

Failure is hard to digest. This is exactly what once happened to the newly crowned weightlifting world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu.

Mirabai, who brought laurels to the country by clinching a Gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships last month, actually thought of quitting the sport after receiving flak for her failure to win a medal at the Rio Olympics.

"I was really low after the Olympics. It took me a lot of time to get over the disappointment. I even thought of giving up the sport and stop training. The comments in social media, the criticism against my coach really hurt me," said Chanu, as reported by PTI.

To overcome the failure at the Olympics, Chanu left no stone unturned and worked on her technique and even went for regular sessions to her psychologist.

"My psychologist also played a big role. I used to go to my psychologist twice in a month but after the Olympics, I started taking sessions every week and it really helped me," she added as per PTI.

In Rio 2016, Chanu had put up a disappointing performance as she could not get an overall total in women's 48 kg, after failing to lift the weight in any of her three attempts in clean and jerk section.

But now, after taking India to new heights, Chanu eyes the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games scheduled to take place next year.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will no longer take place in Durban, South Africa, the BBC and other British media reported Monday.

South Africa sports minister Fikile Mbalula indicated that the government might withdraw its financial support because of the cost of staging the multi-sport event.

Durban was named as the 2022 Games host in September 2015 but Mbalula told a news conference in Cape Town in February that the South African government and the organising Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) had still to reach an agreement over costs.

"It does not look like we will find each other," said Mbalula. "We have given it our best shot, but we cannot live beyond our means."

The CGF executive board was holding a scheduled meeting in London on Monday with the future of the 2022 Games on the agenda.

A CGF spokesman contacted by AFP would not confirm the reports about Durban losing the Games but said he expected to issue a statement later Monday.

The mayor of Liverpool has said the northwest English city is prepared to host the 2022 Games if they are no longer in Durban.

Durban no longer to host 2022 Commonwealth Games: Reports

At least 119 cases of dengue have been reported in India's national capital New Delhi this season, with 91 of these being recorded last month alone, according to a municipal report.

A total of 62 cases were reported till July 23 with May recording six cases and June witnessing 15, it said.

As per the report, the number of vector-borne disease cases recorded last month till July 30 stands at 91.

Twenty-nine fresh cases have been reported since the last count and the total number of cases so far in the city is at least 119, a senior civic official said.

Last year, the city saw a staggering 15,867 dengue cases, the worst in 20 years with the disease claiming 60 lives, as per municipal reports.

This year, dengue cases have been reported rather early.

Last year, only six cases were reported in June, while July registered 36.

Sadar Paharganj and Karol Bagh zones under North Delhi Municipal Corporation reported a case each, while Najafgarh Zone of South Delhi Municipal Corporation has recorded six cases.

West, Central and South Zones of South Corporation recorded two, four and three cases respectively, said a senior official of SDMC, which compiles dengue report on behalf of all the civic bodies in the city.

SDMC has reported 15 cases overall while East Delhi Municipal Corporation has recorded three. Of the total number of cases, 29 were reported from areas outside the jurisdiction of the three municipal corporations.

While 16 cases were reported from Uttar Pradesh, six of those diagnosed with the disease came from Haryana, and 48 of them came from other states.

The number of houses where breeding of mosquitoes were found are 16,348 (NDMC), 34,672 (SDMC) and 5,739 (EDMC). The number of prosecution launched in these areas were 721, 1829 and 189 respectively, the report said.

As part of its preventive measure against the disease, NDMC had last month launched a drive and sought to popularise the use of a specially made cooler and the plant Agave Americana.

Also, the health ministry in June had decided that dengue patients hailing from towns in the national capital region seeking treatment in Delhi hospitals will be registered separately this year so that they are not clubbed with local patients.

In 1996, a severe outbreak of dengue had occurred in Delhi wherein about 10,252 cases and 423 deaths were reported.

In 2010, besides over 6,200 cases, only eight deaths were officially reported. The Commonwealth Games were held that year and massive construction works in the city was a major reason behind the spread of the disease.
