<p>"These charges stem from Mr&nbsp;Gray knowingly allowing his son Colt to possess a weapon," Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Colin Gray, 54, allegedly gave his 14-year-old son a firearm "with the knowledge he was a threat to himself and others" and has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 54-year-old would also face up to 30 years in prison for each count of second-degree felony murder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If convicted, he&nbsp;can&nbsp;get up to 10 years in prison for each count of involuntary manslaughter. He could also get&nbsp;10 years&nbsp;in prison for each count of cruelty to children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Initially, Judge Currie said that the maximum penalty in the case of Colt was the death sentence or life in prison.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lyela Sayarath told CNN that she sat next to him on Wednesday morning in algebra class. "He never really talked, he wasn't (in school) most times, he would just skip class. Even when he would have talked, it was one-word answers," she told the channel.</p>

<p>This morning also, Lyela said, Gray was quiet as usual and had left the class minutes before shots rang. Lyela thought that he was skipping class because he left without a bathroom pass from their teacher. She said that she "wasn't surprised" when Gray was identified as the shooter.</p>

<p>Gray exited the class at 9:45 am and around half an hour later, active shooter alerts sounded in the school. A loudspeaker announcement told teachers to check their emails. That is when Gray reappeared at the door of the classroom, Lyela said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since no one thought that he might be the one carrying out the attack, a student went to open the door. However, he quickly noticed the gun in his hand and moved back. She says that Gray probably understood that they wouldn't open the door for him, so he went to the next class where the door was open and started firing.</p>

<p>He fired "a number of bullets one after another". "When we heard it, most people just dropped to the floor and like kind of crawled in an area like piled on top of each other," she said.</p>
