The air quality in Delhi slipped into the 'very poor’ category after recording 302 on the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 4 pm on December 8. The city recorded an improved AQI in the ‘moderate’ category at the beginning of December. The air quality in the region is expected to improve after the rainfall.

According to the latest forecast, IMD predicted very light rainfall or drizzle in isolated places in Delhi. The rain was expected in areas including the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Vasant Kunj, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Kalkaji, Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad, Chhattarpur, IGNOU, Aya Nagar, and Deramandi.&nbsp;

The Met department has predicted a significant dip in the temperatures in Delhi from December 10, with the mercury touching as low as 3 degrees Celcius.

Cold wave conditions are likely to develop in the northern belt, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, and remain till December 14. IMD has also predicted snowfall in the northern hills as a result of the western disturbance.&nbsp;

“The cold wave will first hit Rajasthan, followed by Punjab and Haryana,” Naresh Kumar told ANI.

A dense fog warning has also been issued across northern India on December 9 and 10, which may cause reduced visibility and disrupt transportation.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a harsh winter for India. As La Niña conditions are expected to arrive by October-November, northwest and central India is likely to witness severe cold waves during the season.

La Niña is the cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific that brings more rainfall to the Indian subcontinent.

While the southwest monsoon rains ended on Monday (Sep 30) with a surplus of eight&nbsp;per cent during the months from June to September, a delayed withdrawal is expected to be over by mid-October, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

“Rainfall activity is increasing in the week commencing from 17 October. If that goes right, we can expect that northeastern monsoon will set in over the southeastern peninsula by 17 October,” Mohapatra said during a press conference regarding monsoon and October weather outlook.&nbsp;

Although there is a delay in monsoon withdrawal, the official date remains unchanged for the country. “We are expecting that there will be withdrawal in the next one-week from northeastern India and then central India gradually. From the entire country, we will keep monitoring and be updating you on a weekly and daily basis,” said the IMD chief.

Usually, monsoon withdrawal begins on September 17 and exits by October 15. However, this year’s withdrawal is delayed due to a low-pressure system prevalent in northwest India.

This year’s rainfall was recorded above normal due to six depressions and 14 low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal. The country’s weather was also affected by the cyclonic storm ‘Asna’ in the Arabian Sea, which was only the third cyclonic storm to form over the Arabian Sea in August since 1891.

<h2>Forecast for coming months</h2>

"There is a 71% chance that La Niña conditions will develop during October-November," said Mohapatra. This will likely result in colder than usual winter temperatures in northern India, including Delhi-NCR.

“La Nina condition is still weak and how much it will strengthen in January or February, that we have to monitor,” the IMD chief&nbsp;added. However, the severity of cold wave conditions will be revealed in November’s forecast.

While the Indian weather agency&nbsp;has predicted above-normal temperatures, the country is likely to witness more than usual rainfall in October.

Areas in South Kashmir like Qazi Gund recorded the lowest temperature at minus 5.0 degree Celsius While Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.4 degree Celsius.&nbsp;

Temperatures across Kashmir region plummet further

As many as 1,500 stranded tourists were rescued by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-ensure-protection-of-human-rights-of-adversaries-also-general-rawat-270673">Indian Army</a> after heavy snowfall blocked the Jawaharlal Nehru road in Sikkim.

The Army carried out the rescue operation on December 27 despite poor visibility and inclement weather.

The stranded tourists were provided relief including, food, shelter, warm clothing and medicines, to ensure their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/unabated-cold-wave-grips-northern-india-270473">safety from weather</a> and high altitude.

"These tourists, travelling in nearly 300 taxis, were returning from Nathu La Pass - Tsomgo Lake on Friday evening and got stranded midway at various points along Jawaharlal Nehru road as the motorable stretch was blocked by snow," read an official statement by Indian Army.

The stranded tourists including women, children and elderly persons were accommodated at Army Camp at 17th Mile.

The Army provided JCB and Dozers to clear the snow and restore road connectivity at the earliest.

The evacuation process is still on and will continue till all stranded tourists are safely evacuated to the state capital Gangtok.

Indian Army rescues 1500 stranded tourists in Sikkim

Several states in the northern part of the country are reeling under a severe cold wave.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold day to severe cold day conditions are very likely in many pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Bone-chilling cold winds have affected isolated places in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.

"Dense to very dense fog is very likely in many pockets over East Uttar Pradesh; in some pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi," the IMD stated in its All India Weather Warning Bulletin.

According to the weather forecast agency, fog is also likely in isolated pockets of West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, and Tripura in the morning hours.

Thunderstorm accompanied with hail and lightning is very likely at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and also in few parts of Jharkhand and Coastal and south interior Karnataka.

Most of the northern parts of India have been engulfed by fog. According to IMD, visibility recorded at 5:30 am today was 200 meters and less in several parts.

For instance, in Churu, Lucknow, Baharaich and Dibrugarh the visibility was 25 meters each while in Patiala, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Gwalior and Guwahati it was only 50 meters each.

In Ambala, Bareilly, Bikaner, Sultanpur and Purnea the visibility was only 200 meters each.&nbsp;

According to the weather forecast agency, fog is also likely in isolated pockets of West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, and Tripura in the morning hours. Thunderstorm accompanied with hail and lightning is very likely at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and also in few parts of Jharkhand and Coastal and south interior Karnataka.
