<p>The intense Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption on January 15, 2022, broke all records for direct injection of water vapour by a volcano or otherwise in the "satellite era". It also sent enormous volumes of ash into the stratosphere. According to a study that was published in Geophysical Letters, the powerful explosion sprayed water vapour up to heights of 53 km.&nbsp;“Tonga eruption may be the first volcanic eruption observed to impact climate not through surface cooling caused by volcanic sulfate aerosols, but rather through surface warming caused by excess water vapour,” the study noted.</p>

<p><strong>How big was the explosion?</strong></p>

<p>As per Live Science, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted&nbsp;with the equivalent force of 100 Hiroshima bombs, making it the most powerful explosion to have occurred on Earth in more than 30 years.</p>

<p><strong>What harm can come from water in the atmosphere?</strong></p>

<p>Large volumes of SO2 are typically released into the atmosphere during volcanic eruptions, which cools the globe. Surprisingly, Tonga did not emit a lot of HCl or SO2.</p>

<p>"This eruption could impact climate not through surface cooling due to sulfate aerosols, but rather through surface warming due to the radiative forcing from the excess stratospheric H2O," said the study.</p>

The warming effect of the water will likely outlast any cooling effects the gases produce since it is anticipated to persist longer than other volcanic gases like sulphur dioxide, which typically fall out of the atmosphere within two to three years.</p>

<p>According to geologists, this indicates that the Tonga explosion will probably be the first known eruption to have a warming influence on the world rather than a cooling effect.</p>

<p>The 2,800-page report -- by far the most comprehensive assessment of how to halt global heating ever produced -- documents to "a litany of broken&nbsp;climate&nbsp;promises", said UN chief Antonio Guterres in a blistering judgement of governments and industry. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Some government and business leaders are saying one thing -- but doing another. Simply put, they are lying. And the results will be catastrophic," Guterres said in a video message released at the same time as the UN report.</p>

<p>In recent months, the IPCC has published the first two instalments in a trilogy of mammoth scientific assessments covering how greenhouse gas emissions are heating the planet and what that means for life on Earth.</p>

<p>This third report outlines what we can do about it.</p>

<p>"We are at a crossroads," said IPCC chief Hoesung Lee. "The decisions we make now can secure a liveable future. We have the tools and know-how required to limit warming."&nbsp;</p>

<p>There are solutions, the report says, but they touch on virtually all aspects of modern life and require significant investment and need "immediate action".</p>

<p>The very first item on the global to-do list is to stop greenhouse gas emissions from rising any further.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That must be done before 2025 to have a hope of keeping within even the less ambitious warming targets of the Paris deal of two degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scenarios of catastrophic 2.5C of warming also have emissions peaking within three years.</p>

<p>Beyond that, the report said carbon emissions need to drop 43 percent by 2030 and 84 percent by mid-century to meet the more ambitious Paris goal of 1.5C. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5C," said Jim Skea, a professor at Imperial College London and co-chair of the working group behind the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, it will be impossible."</p>

<p>And cutting emissions is no longer enough, the IPCC said. Technologies to suck CO2 out of the atmosphere -- not yet operating to scale -- will need to be ramped up enormously.</p>

<p>The Calderone glacier, which lies in the Gran Sasso d'Italia, an expanse in the Apennine Mountains, first split two decades ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, due to climate change, global temperatures are rising at a faster rate than ever before, which is increasing the glacier's risk of melting away into the geological record books, a mere relic of the past.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a 2010 study published in the Journal of Glaciology, since its split twenty years ago, the glacier has been in a headlong retreat: its volume decreased by around 90 per cent between 1916 and 1990.</p>

<p>"This was the southernmost glacier in Europe and that's why it was an icon and a symbol, but now it is shrinking more and more," says glaciologist Massimo Frezzotti while talking to AFP.</p>

<p>According to Frezzotti, president of the Italian Glaciological Committee, the glacier could disappear completely within 10-20 years.</p>

<p>A period during which glaciers lose more mass than they gain known as the ablation season had effectively "disappeared" because the temperatures were too high.</p>

<p>"The duration of the ablation seasons became longer, the rainfall remained constant but there is a reduction in the snowfall and of course the mass balance of the glacier has shrunk more and more," he said.</p>

<p>The Calderone glacier in Italy has been the subject of research by Massimo Pecci, another member of the group for the past 25 years.</p>

<p>He says that "Since 2000 we have been witnessing a gradual reduction of the thickness, of the area and a further fragmentation into smaller glacierets,".</p>
