Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has decided to change his official date of birth to the date he was actually born in order to closely align with the Chinese zodiac calendar.

Notably, he had been using the wrong date for decades.

The sudden announcement from the prime minister, who is described as extremely superstitious, came after his elder brother passed away on May 5, according to local media reports.

Hun Sen suspects that his brother's death might have been caused&nbsp;due to incorrect date of birth which also conflicts with the Chinese zodiac calendar.

His brother died of a heart attack 10 days after returning from Singapore where he received medical treatment.

Hun Sen said he had two dates of birth, one on April 4, 1951, and the other on Aug. 5, 1952, the latter of which he says is correct.

He claims that an administrative error was to blame for him using an incorrect date of birth.

The Chinese zodiac “should not be ignored,” said Hun Sen on Tuesday.

"I have discussed with Justice Minister Koeut Rith already and I will return to use my actual birth date," he said, according to Malaysia-based Star newspaper.

The prime minister said once the process of changing his date of birth is complete, he would make an announcement in public and notify to the friendly countries&nbsp;via a diplomatic note.

It is pretty common for Cambodians who are older than 50 to have two birthdays, as many lost their official records during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979.

Many also altered their records to dodge military conscription throughout the 1980s, as the conflict continued to rage between the government and ousted Khmer Rouge rebels.

China on Thursday released a zodiac calendar involving a 12-year cycle of animals.

In his paper published in the Kashgar University’s Academic Journal, a professor called Li Shinhui, former director of Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences' linguistic research institute, said that it actually originated in ancient Babylon.

Its astronomical knowledge was spread to India which modified the zodiac system before being disseminated to China during about the 3rd century BC along the Ancient Silk Road.

A Korean user pointed out on social media that “The 24 solar terms are China’s, but it is also South Korea’s.”&nbsp;

“Our country is also an agricultural society. This system was introduced into our country during the Joseon era (1392—1910). It is included in the civil servant qualification test here. It is just a cultural heritage of East Asian countries including China, Japan and South Korea.”

In response, a Chinese netizen said, “This system was made based on China’s weather changes. Weather change is related to the region’s geographical environment. China is a large country, while Korea is so small. Can the two countries’ climate features be the same?”

It comes after Chinese and South Korean netizens clashed over the origin of Kimchi, a staple Korean cuisine made of cabbage.

Beijing recently won a certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for Pao Cai, a pickled vegetable dish from Sichuan.

The achievement was reported by the state-run Global Times as “an international standard for the Kimchi industry led by China.”

South Korean media was fast to dispute such a claim and accuse the bigger neighbour of trying to make Kimchi a type of China-made Pao Cai.
