Head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council Kuan Bi-ling, who oversees the Coast Guard, while giving details about the man said that he was "quite refined and well-presented".

Bi-ling also confirmed that the apprehended man was previously a Chinese Navy captain.

<h2>'Grey Zone' tactics&nbsp;</h2>

Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo suggested that the incident could be an example of China's "grey zone" tactics.

"Grey zone" tactics against Taiwan refer to a set of strategies and actions that fall short of overt military aggression but are aimed at undermining Taiwan's sovereignty and increasing pressure on the island.

“These grey zone tactics have always existed,” Koo said while adding, “We must always maintain our vigilance and cannot rule out the possibility of taking countermeasures.”

<h2>What do we know about the incident?</h2>

The incident took place on a two-hour Scoot Airline flight – the low-budget subsidiary of Singapore Airlines – travelling from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore. Zhang has been charged with three counts of theft on suspicion of ransacking the bags of three passengers.

The Chinese national allegedly stole from three separate passengers, according to the charging documents reported by Singapore’s Channel News Asia.&nbsp;

Zhang reportedly took about $123 from one passenger’s backpack and took $20,950 and a $38 (50 Singapore dollar note) from a black messenger bag belonging to another.

The 52-year-old allegedly also stole around $1,700 from an envelope he found inside a grey bag belonging to a third passenger.&nbsp;

Zhang was formally charged with theft counts in a Singapore district court on Monday (Dec 18) after being remanded for police investigations. If convicted, he could face up to three&nbsp;years in prison, a fine, or both.&nbsp;

An airline spokesperson told CNN that it “was aware of an incident” that occurred onboard a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore on December 16.&nbsp;

A Scoot Airline spokesperson told CNN that they cannot give any further details about the case and have also asked crew and passengers to remain vigilant on board.

A member of the local citizen-police liaison committee told This Week in Asia that police in northern Pakistan have taken a Chinese engineer into custody from a worksite camp at the Dasu hydropower project.&nbsp;

The police made the arrest “to avert a serious situation”, as per the member.&nbsp;A police station in the rural Kohistan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is where the Chinese national was reportedly being held, according to the source.

According to unconfirmed accounts, troops fired warning bullets into the air to quell the crowd. After nearly four hours when authorities had given community leaders assurances that the Chinese engineer would face legal repercussions, the demonstrators dispersed.

A Chinese engineer and former graduate student from the United States’ Chicago was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday (January 25) for gathering information on possible recruits for Beijing like engineers and scientists in the US, said the Department of Justice (DOJ). Additionally, Ji Chaoqun, the Chinese spy in question was also linked to Beijing’s efforts to steal aviation trade secrets from Washington.&nbsp;

According to reports, the 31-year-old came to the US on a student visa in 2013 to study electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology and later enlisted in the US Army Reserves after lying to his recruiters. Ji was arrested in 2018 and convicted last September for illegally acting as an agent for a foreign government which in this case was China’s Jiangsu Province Ministry of State Security and making a false statement to the US Army.&nbsp;

During these meetings, Ji spoke about how he obtained US citizenship and security clearance due to the Army Reserves programme said the Justice Department. Additionally, he revealed his plans to seek a job at the CIA, FBI or NASA and perform cybersecurity work which would give him access to databases, including those that contained scientific research. 
 
In a statement, the DOJ also said that Ji was working at the direction of Xu Yanjun, who is a deputy division director at the Jiangsu provincial branch of the MMS. Furthermore, the Chinese national’s case was also linked to plotting to steal trade secrets from Ohio-based General Electric Aviation and other companies including US military suppliers, as per AFP. &nbsp;

Chinese engineer sentenced to eight years in United States prison for spying

The US Justice Department said on Friday said that a Chinese national pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit economic espionage.

Xiang Haitao, 44, conspired to steal "trade secrets" from an international company based in the United States to benefit China, the Justice Department said.

"Xiang has now admitted that he stole a trade secret from Monsanto, transferred it to a memory card and attempted to take it to China,” the US Justice Department added.

The department alleged that Xiang used his "insider status" to steal "valuable trade secrets". The court documents showed Xian worked as an imaging scientist in the international company Monsanto from 2008 to 2017.

The Justice Department informed that the corporation where Xiang was working developed "digital, online farming software platform that was used by farmers to collect, store and visualise critical agricultural field data".

“The American worker suffers when adversaries&nbsp;like China&nbsp;steal technology to grow their economies,” Alan E. Kohler from the FBI said. The investigating agency asserted that "it’s not just military technology developed in secret labs that adversaries want,&nbsp;it was agricultural technology used by American farmers to improve crop yields."&nbsp;

In 2017, federal authorities had searched Xiang's baggage as he was leaving for China and later found he was carrying copies of the "nutrient optimiser". The Chinese national was arrested after he returned from his country.

Xiang reportedly pleaded guilty to committing economic espionage and is set to be sentenced on April 17. He may face a maximum of 15 years in jail and a potential fine of $5 million.

Chinese national in US steals agricultural tech, pleads guilty to economic espionage

A 24-year-old Chinese national has been extradited from Malaysia to the US to face charges for money laundering.

The justice department had alleged that he used a nationwide ring of individuals who smuggled at least 1,500 protected turtles out of the country valued at USD 2.5 million.

Kang Juntao of Hangzhou City in eastern China was charged in February 2019 with financing a number of individuals who smuggled at least 1,500 protected turtles out of the US valued at USD 2,250,000.

He was arrested on January 23 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on a request submitted by the US authorities for his provisional arrest with a view to extradition.

According to the indictment, from June 12, 2017, through December 3, 2018, Kang allegedly purchased turtles in the US and arranged for them to be smuggled to associates in Hong Kong. He sent money through US banks, including one in New Jersey, to pay for the turtles and their illegal shipments.

The turtles would then be sold on the Asian pet trade black market for thousands of dollars each, depending on their sex, colouring, and age.

The US, Malaysia, China and approximately 181 other countries are signatories to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

CITES is an international treaty that restricts trade in species that may be threatened with extinction.

Kang allegedly trafficked in five turtle species protected by the treaty.

The indictment further alleges that Kang sent money through PayPal to the US to purchase turtles from sellers advertising on social media or reptile trade websites.

Kang paid and instructed these intermediaries to repackage the turtles in boxes with false labels for clandestine shipment to Hong Kong.

In a development that will bound to raise eyebrows, Chinese nationals have been found to be&nbsp;involved in money laundering and hawala transactions in India.&nbsp;

India's tax department conducted searches in 21 locations in Delhi, Ghaziabad and&nbsp;Gurugram after getting "credible information" of the Chinese involvement in money laundering.

The Central Board of direct taxes or CBDT in a statement said, these individuals "were involved in money laundering and hawala transactions through series of shell entities, a search action was mounted at various premises of these Chinese entities, their close confederates and couple of bank employees."

According to the CBDT, the Chinese nationals created more than 40 bank accounts and credited more than Rs. 1000 crores.

The statement explained "A subsidiary of Chinese company and its related concerns have taken over Rs. 100 crores bogus advances from shell entities for opening businesses of retail showrooms in India."

Incriminating documents related to hawala transactions and money laundering with "active involvement of bank employees and Chartered accountants" have also surfaced.

While investigations are under progress, foreign hawala transactions have also emerged.&nbsp;

One name of Chinese national allegedly involved in the hawala transaction has emerged. While his actual name is Luo Sang, he took a fake identity Charlie Peng with Indian passport he was able to get from Manipur.&nbsp;

He was using 8-10 bank accounts and represented fake Chinese companies in Hawala operations worth Rs 300 crore.

The development comes even as India has tightened scrutiny over Chinese investments in the country, and banned 59 Chinese apps after the Galwan incident on June 15. India lost 20 Indian soldiers in the incident while China also suffered casualties but declined to come up with a number.

"He captured a few pictures with us and later we started talking. He was impressed and immediately asked us to convert him to Islam," the PTI minister remarked.

Following the meeting, Abdullah reportedly travelled to Pakistan to learn the teachings of Islam.

Two security guards have been arrested from interior Sindh province on the charge of stabbing a Chinese national and stealing Rs 3 million rupees other valuables from him in Karachi.

DIG South, Sharjeel Karim Kharal told the media that the guards were arrested on Friday from near the town of Jamshoro.

"They had attacked the Chinese national with knives in a neighbourhood of Defence Housing Society and robbed him of Rs 3 million and other valuables on Thursday," he said.

Kharal said the guards worked for a private security agency and were detained at the residence of the Chinese national, Shi Qingpu, who was residing in Karachi while being engaged in private business.

The two accused attacked Shi at his residence on Thursday night, stabbed him and made away with the cash and valuables, the DIG said.

"The two guards were arrested at Jamshoro toll plaza after fleeing from Karachi," he added.

The injured foreigner was admitted to a private hospital in Clifton. Senior police officials met him there and according to Kharal, Shi's condition is stated to be out of danger.
