The authors of the GEM report, as per CNBC, have urged countries to accelerate the shutdown of coal plants and for nations like China to adopt stricter controls on the development and usage of new plants.

Flora Champenois, an analyst at Global Energy Monitor, emphasised the importance of this, stating, "Otherwise we can forget about meeting our goals in the Paris Agreement and reaping the benefits that a swift transition to clean energy will bring."

As per IEA estimates, to limit temperature rises within the key threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius, all global coal generation needs to cease by 2040. This, according to GEM, would require an average of 126 GW in coal plant capacity to be shut down annually for the next 17 years — equivalent to about two coal plants per week.

<h2>Broken promises</h2>

Despite China's commitment to reach net-zero by 2060 and its pledge to control and phase down coal consumption, the country started construction on 70.2 GW of new coal-power capacity last year, almost 20 times as much as the rest of the world combined. China also only retired about 3.7 GW of its coal capacity in 2023.

However, GEM remains optimistic and said that with "immediate and determined action," China can still meet its climate targets, including a goal set by the National Energy Administration in 2022 to retire 30 GW of coal power by 2025.

While low retirement rates contributed to coal's significant growth in 2023, the report expects these rates to accelerate in the US and Europe, potentially offsetting some new capacity in China.

The statement restated Beijing's standard line on Taiwan, saying, "China firmly opposes separatist moves toward 'Taiwan independence' and interference by external forces, and never allows any room for 'Taiwan independence' forces in whatever form."

It went on to say, "As an unsettled question since the Chinese civil war, Taiwan will eventually return to the embrace of the motherland and the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will surely achieve reunification."

During the interview, the FM said, "We want to maintain the status quo and the status quo is that Taiwan is not run by the PRC and we don't want to see a day that authoritarian China or communist China is going to have its jurisdiction over Taiwan."

On the current situation in the Taiwan Strait, he said, "Chinese have been putting pressure on Taiwan. They conduct military exercises around Taiwan very often. And as we speak, right now, the Chinese are flying sorties and have their warships conducting exercises not far from Taiwan, and also they are engaging in economic pressure against Taiwan."&nbsp;

In the past few months, increased engagement has been seen between India and Taiwan, including, the signing of a mobility pact, a Taiwanese company involved in establishing semiconductors fab plant in Gujarat. Later this year, Taiwan will open an office, its de facto consulate in India's financial city, Mumbai.

In a bid to de-escalate tensions in the West Asian region, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi and urged Beijing to assert its influence to dissuade Iran from launching an offensive against Israel.

Wang further urged the United States to play “a constructive role” in the Middle East during the telephonic conversation, the US State Department released a statement saying.

After the phone call, China said that Wang also expressed China's "condemnation" of the strike on an Iranian consulate building in Syria's Damascus.

“China will continue to play a constructive role in the resolution of the Middle East issue… and contribute to cooling down the situation,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said as per The Times Of Israel report.

“The United States side in particular should play a constructive role.”

This comes after the United States issued concerns saying that an Iranian attack on Israel is imminent. US-based media outlets claimed that the strike could involve high-precision missile and drone attacks at military and government sites in Israel.&nbsp;

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant also said on Thursday that Israel would respond directly to any attack by Iran. "A direct Iranian attack will require an appropriate Israeli response against Iran," Gallant told US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, according to remarks issued by his office.&nbsp;

Tehran has already issued a warning as supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said this week that Israel "must be punished and it shall be" for attacking the Iranian embassy compound in Syria.&nbsp;

Earlier in February, Washington&nbsp;allowed Chinese airlines to increase their direct flights to the US to address pandemic-related disruptions.&nbsp;The letter argues that China's aviation market remains heavily restricted compared to pre-pandemic levels.&nbsp;

Chinese carriers were given approval by US officials to make 50 weekly round trips to and from the United States, up from 35, from March 31, 2020.

So making investments in India or entering into cooperation with Indian electronics or manufacturing becomes a viable option," said Taiwanese Minister Joseph Wu.&nbsp;

Speaking to our WION correspondent Sidhant Sibal from Taipei, the Taiwanese foreign minister also warned of disinformation campaigns ahead of the Indian election.&nbsp;

He said, "India is also going through an election and I'm sure the Chinese would like to create this open environment to shape the minds of the Indian people."&nbsp;

India and Taiwan have seen high-level developments, including the signing of a mobility pact. Under the mobility pact, Indian workers can travel to Taiwan which can boost the self-ruled island's economy. Taiwan is also working on opening up its office in Mumbai.&nbsp;
