A person who commits an offence under the section (9) of National Security Act "is liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 14 years or a fine (or both".

Commander Dominic Murphy, the head of the Met’s counter-terrorism command, said: "While these offences are concerning, I want to reassure the public that we do not believe there to be any wider threat to them. This investigation remains ongoing, but now that charges have been brought, I urge people not to speculate or comment further in relation to this case."

On the flip side, India experienced a slight decline in exports to the US, which dipped by 1.32 per cent to $77.5 billion in FY24. <o:p></o:p>

However, imports from the US saw an uptick of 14.7per cent, amounting to $40.78 billion. <o:p></o:p>

Despite this increase in imports, India managed to maintain a trade surplus with the US, expanding from $16.86 billion to $36.74 billion.<o:p></o:p>

Ajay Srivastava, the Founder of GTRI, highlighted the evolving trade dynamics between India and its top trading partners. <o:p></o:p>

He noted that while India's exports to China remained relatively steady, imports surged by 44.7 per cent, resulting in a widening trade deficit. <o:p></o:p>

Conversely, trade with the US exhibited major growth, with exports surging by 47.9 per cent and imports by 14.7 per cent, contributing to an expanded trade surplus for India.<o:p></o:p>

The data from GTRI further revealed that India's trade relationships with its top 15 trading partners underwent major transformations from fiscal year 2019 to FY24, impacting both exports and imports across various sectors. <o:p></o:p>

Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has said that his country will be "very sensitive to any needs of our neighbours" amid the visits of a Chinese vessel. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, FM Zameer said, "We will make sure that the Indian Ocean is a peaceful place and a peaceful Indian Ocean is good for India as well as is good for Maldives." Notably, a&nbsp;Chinese research ship, Xiang Yang Hong 03, visited the country two times earlier this year.

FM Zameer held talks with EAM Jaishankar on Thursday (May 9) in Delhi, in what was the first high-level visit from the Muizzu government&nbsp;that took charge last year. Terming India as a "development partner in the Maldives", the FM confirmed that debt relief was part of the talks with the Indian side. He further confirmed that Indian tourists to Maldives had "tremendously decreased".

Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India-Maldives ties and how were your talks with EAM Jaishankar?

Moosa Zameer:&nbsp;India being geographically the closest country to Maldives with historical relations of people-to-people connection.&nbsp;India has also been a development partner in the Maldives.&nbsp;If you look at history, Maldives has rapidly grown from the least developed nation, and&nbsp;India played a catalytic role in this achievement. My meeting with the External Affairs Minister, we had a very good meeting,&nbsp;we were able to discuss and focus on our priorities&nbsp;and also look back at what has happened and what we could do better. We could work and what are the new challenges that we have.&nbsp;

Sidhant Sibal: When it comes to tourism, that has been the pillar of the relationship&nbsp;but we have seen the number of Indian tourists travelling to Maldives now getting reduced because of what we know happened in the past. What's your take when it comes to Indian tourists travelling to the Maldives?&nbsp;

Moosa Zameer:&nbsp;India obviously is one of the very key source markets for the Maldives.&nbsp;If you look at the statistics, earlier this year, we had in Maldives, incoming tourism had a growth of about 16%.&nbsp;But the Indian tourism market, the source market has actually tremendously decreased&nbsp;due to some issues that we have had.&nbsp;I don't think it's an issue with the govt because you could recall there&nbsp;was&nbsp;some remarks which were regretful towards the leadership of India&nbsp;and then I think, I have issued a statement and&nbsp;it was not the view of the government and it definitely is not the president or the people of Maldives, how we view Indian leadership or Indians as such.&nbsp;So we have issued statements and we believe the message was received well and obviously, it's the sort of social media which has actually led to it.&nbsp;Unfortunately, if you really look at it there isn't much we could do but definitely it's going to improve with my visit and also the future collaborations that we are going to have, which we have discussed earlier today. So Indian markets like my tourism minister has said, Indian source market is very important for us and then we will continue to work on that.

Sidhant Sibal: Were there any discussions on debt relief?

Moosa Zameer: Like I have said, if you look at the macroeconomic balances in the Maldives, when we came into the government, any country which we owe money, we needed to discuss that.&nbsp;That was part of the discussion.&nbsp;Yes. But again, you will see the previous government has actually taken debt from I think it was 60 billion Rufiyaa when they came in 2018 and then when they left it, it was about 220 billion Rufiyaa. So obviously a big part of the debt is to India. a big part of that and that is to India, we had to discuss that as well.&nbsp;

Sidhant Sibal: The government in Maldives is seen as pro-China not very pro-India, would you reaffirm your India-first policy?

Moosa Zameer:&nbsp;The current government is pro-Maldives government.&nbsp;So we have good relations with all development partners or bilateral allies.&nbsp;We have good relations with India as well as China.&nbsp;China has been a development partner with Maldives, in the past decade. There is a lot of involvement in China being a country, whose economy is growing rapidly, their investments and their collaborations with their partners, and the world has seen this happen. I think we are also part of those countries where China has been actively engaged in developing and then bringing in projects and bringing in finances which they were investing abroad. 
 
Sidhant Sibal: Chinese research cum spy vessels have visited Maldives.

Moosa Zameer: Well, actually, the vessel in question, in January 2024, we received a request for the diplomatic clearance of the vessel for peaceful purposes for port call. We issued as requested like we have been issued and many others, I think, early March, a US destroyer came to Maldives and after that, there was one from Turkey and so this is one of those processes. So again, I can understand what you mean. So,&nbsp;we will definitely be very sensitive to any needs of our neighbours. We will make sure that the Indian Ocean is a peaceful place and a peaceful Indian Ocean is good for India as well as is good for Maldives.&nbsp;And a prosperous Maldives is good for India and it is good for Maldives.

Sidhant Sibal: One thing that you have been talking about is the removal of Indian defence personnel stationed in Maldives. What is the status, because the deadline is 10th&nbsp;May.

Moosa Zameer: If you look at military and defence cooperation, India and Maldives have a history. And it's not just about Indian military personnel. India is I think the only country after the US that we have military exercises. We met earlier this year also, we have had these military exercises Dosti- Sri Lanka and Maldives and as an observer, I think Bangladesh also participated and we have more plans in the future.&nbsp;So we have the Indian military personnel who left and civilians have taken over, so it was a bit sensitive issue for the Maldives and Indian Government has actually taken care of that and we really appreciate that.&nbsp;I think when the two leaders, PM Modi and President Muizzu met in Dubai earlier it was agreed and so we have actually moved beyond that. So that part is over.&nbsp;But those military platforms are being manned by civilians, Indian civilians.&nbsp;Like I said, we are pro-Maldives and we have no intention of replacing the military of another country or anything because we are pro-Maldives.

The Covid pandemic, the US-China rivalry, the India-China border clash, the wars in Ukraine and West Asia, Italy’s withdrawal from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and China's economic and political woes have all combined to turn the geopolitics upside down. As the US presidential elections slowly advance to a climax in November and the likelihood of Trump 2.0 gains salience, China seemed set to woo friends in Europe seeking to neutralise its growing criticism. This trip is also a precursor to the two upcoming developments: the Russian President’s visit to China later in May, and the US President’s participation in the G7 summit in Italy in mid-June. Talks in Paris Gabriel Attal, 35, the youngest French Prime Minister in history, receiving Xi at Orly Airport in Paris presented a gripping opening scene of the Euro-tour: a fresh-faced host eager to please, and a seasoned international figure, aged 70, keen to impress the world. Another memory that may linger on was of the Chinese President lecturing top European leaders – French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (VDL) about the value of ‘strategic communication’ and more. Discussions in Paris covered a host of political and economic questions, but what drew the maximum attention was the EU’s unhappiness over China's trade and economic policies. EU-China daily trade volume is around EUR 2.3 billion, but the economic relationship is stressed “through state-induced over capacity, unequal market access and over dependencies,” as VDL put it. Hence, a strong plea was made for a more balanced trade amidst reports of investigations by the European side of certain Chinese industrial sectors such as electric vehicle exports, and Chinese investigations of mostly French-made brandy imports. Experts concluded that China seemed unwilling to offer substantive concessions. This compelled VDL to state at a subsequent press conference that “Europe will not waiver from making tough decisions to protect its markets.” This assertive reaction revealed the signs of subtle coordination between the EU and the US regarding their common dissatisfaction with Beijing on access issues. EU’s depiction since 2019 of China as a “systemic rival” remains valid. Executing its own pushback, the Chinese side conveyed that the perception of China's over-capacity was baseless when judged by the yardsticks of comparative advantage and global demand. On trade issues, the intra-Europe rift is quite well-known: while France favours a tough approach, Germany – ever sensitive to the needs of its big car manufacturers – prefers caution. This was in sharp contrast to what Antony Blinken, US secretary of state, bluntly conveyed to China recently: that it must stop the supply of dual-use technology products to Russia that threatens European security, or the US would take suitable counter-measures. The Chinese president urged France to assert its independence, as China does, and help it prevent a new cold war. Paris agrees, but its inability to revive the Franco-German combine as the engine for a strong Europe and Macron’s domestic troubles remain serious constraints for European independence. Moreover, the two-year-old war has made Europe even more dependent on the US. A greater convergence was noted about the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Xi Jinping termed the war “a tragedy” and “a test of human conscience.” Macron asserted that France and China shared “the same goals,” namely to achieve an immediate ceasefire to release hostages, protect the population, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, encourage a regional de-escalation, and re-open a political perspective. However, the disconnect between such lofty pronouncements and the unfolding ugly reality of continued violence in Gaza is striking. Serbia and Hungary Xi Jinping’s discussions in more friendly countries – Serbia and Hungary – achieved greater success. As a huge crowd assembled before the presidential palace in Belgrade greeted the visiting dignitary chanting, “China, China,” Aleksandar Vučić, President of Serbia, asserted, “We are writing history today.” He underlined the significance of the 29 agreements signed for promoting economic and other cooperation. Xi recalled that Serbia became China's first strategic partner in central and eastern Europe. It agreed to build “a community of shared future” with China. The two leaders were resolved to “jointly confront hegemony and the politics of power.” On key political issues, the two nations stood together. Serbia supports China's position on Taiwan and China supports Serbia’s efforts to preserve the territorial integrity regarding Kosovo. Spending two nights in Hungary, the last stop of his tour, the Chinese President witnessed the signing of 16 bilateral agreements. Hungary was the first EU member-state to join BRI. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Xi Jinping focused on deepening economic cooperation, including cooperation “in the full spectrum” of the nuclear industry. They articulated a similar position on Ukraine. Budapest favours China taking a leading role as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine and has expressed its support for China's proposed peace plan. In a public letter to Orbán, Xi stressed the importance of China-EU relations, asserting that their cooperation was greater than the competition and there was more agreement than disagreement. Assessment While the Chinese visit will be dissected thoroughly in foreign ministries and think tanks around the world, it is possible to draw a few tentative conclusions as the visit ends. One, China's status as the world’s second-largest economy and the No. 2 power stands affirmed. The EU, despite its divisions and weaknesses, remains drawn to the lure of the Chinese market and investments. Hence the endeavours to keep the two sides broadly on the same page are set to continue. Two, China and Europe belong to two opposite ends of the geopolitical spectrum: the former, with Russia, forms the East, and the latter, with the US and others, forms the West. The East-West mix of cooperation, competition and confrontation will go on unabated. It may assume a sharper edge following the forthcoming Russia-China and G7 summits. Three, China will continue to accentuate the US-Europe divergences and intra-EU differences to improve its position in the fluctuating balance of power. Four, the two camps, though powerful, show their utter powerlessness in ending the raging wars and re-establishing peace. This demonstrates the failure of international diplomacy and leadership. Finally, three takeaways for India may be identified. First, after the elections, New Delhi should inject more creativity and energy into building up its strategic partnership with all G7 nations, while managing the differences with some of them such as the US, Canada and the EU. Second, it must continue consolidating solid cooperation and trust with Russia. Third, it may examine its options for introducing some resilience in India-China relations because a reset of some kind can expand India's manoeuvrability in dealing with the great powers. Ghani said Malaysia would offer orangutans as gifts to trading partners, particularly major importers such as the EU, India and China, as part of a diplomatic strategy.

“This will prove to the global community that Malaysia is committed to biodiversity conservation,” said the minister, in a statement, on X.&nbsp;

He added, “Malaysia cannot take a defensive approach to the issue of palm oil. Instead we need to show the countries of the world that Malaysia is a sustainable palm oil producer and is committed to protecting forests and environmental sustainability.”
