This change was prompted by a clash in 2020 between troops from the two countries in Galwan Valley, an area in northern Ladakh, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed. “China poses a long-term strategic challenge for India, affecting both its border and its interests in the Indian Ocean,” Viraj Solanki, an expert from the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told The Diplomat in an interview. This had prompted India to adjust its defence partnerships, with an eye to countering China’s increasing clout in the Indo-Pacific region, he explained. China was trying to expand its influence and presence in the region through greater engagement with these countries, Solanki said. The move was meant to "enrich the visiting experience" and make the "trip worthwhile" for those "who have travelled a long way," operators wrote on their Weibo social media account.

Iran has condemned a decision by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors to pass a resolution criticising Tehran as ‘hasty and unwise’, Iranian State TV reported.

The UN nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation board of governors passed a resolution on Wednesday (June 5) calling on Iran to cooperate with it.

“The decision of the Western countries was quick and hasty, and it will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the course of diplomatic engagement and constructive cooperation between Iran and the opposing parties,” state TV cited Iran’s mission to the United Nations as saying.

The move comes amid an impasse over Iran’s escalating nuclear activities and as Western powers fear Tehran may be seeking to develop a nuclear weapon, a claim Iran has consistently denied.

The resolution passed with 20 votes in favour – including the United States, which initially was reluctant for fear of aggravating Middle East tensions – with 12 abstention and one country not participating, reported AFP news agency.

The censure motion aims to raise diplomatic pressure on Iran, with the option to potentially refer the issue to the UN Security Council.

Iran preemptively condemned the censure motion as lacking legal, technical, and political merit, threatening a strong response.

In the past, similar resolutions have provoked Tehran to retaliate by removing surveillance cameras and other equipment from its nuclear facilities and ratcheting up its uranium enrichment activities.

As per the IAEA, Iran is the only non-nuclear weapon state to enrich uranium to the high level of 60 percent – just short of weapons-grade – while it keeps accumulating large uranium stockpiles.

In a statement, Britain, France, and Germany (E3) emphasised the resolution's strong message backing the IAEA's efforts. They warned Iran that the international community will not tolerate actions that threaten the non-proliferation system and undermine safeguards designed to prevent nuclear proliferation.

“We hope Iran takes this chance to resolve these matters so that no further Board action is necessary.”

However, Iran has gradually broken away from its promises under the nuclear deal it struck with world powers in 2015.

Whipps said that the attack, where thousands of documents were stolen from island nation's government, took place soon after Palau signed a new 20-year economic and security deal with the United States.

“This is really the first major attack that we’ve seen on government records,” said Palau’s president during his visit to Japan. A report by the New York Times said that more than 20,000 documents were stolen from Palau’s government, back in March.&nbsp;

The archipelago made of 350 small islands in the Pacific Ocean is becoming increasingly significant for Washington as it has sought to counter Beijing’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the US reportedly finalised the long-delayed plan to give Palau hundreds of millions of dollars in aid over the next two decades.&nbsp;

The documents, stolen in March, appeared on the dark web a month later and, according to NYT, included a presentation about a US radar installation in Palau marked, “For Official Use Only.”&nbsp;

It also reportedly had crew lists of Japanese Navy ships which had visited the island nation. Some of the thousands of documents stolen also detailed the close relationship between Palau and Taiwan.&nbsp;

After the NYT report, Taiwan, on Monday (Jun 3) condemning the cyberattack said that it was ready to help Palau beef up its digital defences against “authoritarian infiltration.”

<h2>Palau’s president blames China</h2>

“China wants to weaken those relationships, show our vulnerability, and what a great way to do it by hacking our system,” said Whipps presumably referring to the island nation’s relations with Taiwan and the US.&nbsp;

According to Palau’s president, the analysis of the data showed the ransomware was likely developed in Russia. It was sent out of Malaysia and “it looks like it has ties back to China”.&nbsp;

He added, “The reason we say maybe there’s government involvement is that they weren’t interested in money. They really didn’t demand any money.”

However, the NYT reported a ransomware group known as DragonForce claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks and said it carried out the ‘hack purely for financial gain’.&nbsp;

In a separate interview, Palau’s president had said “It is unfortunate that China would do things like this,” and reaffirmed ties with Taiwan.&nbsp;

China has since rejected the allegations and called&nbsp;Whipps’ remarks “extremely irresponsible”.&nbsp;

“It is extremely irresponsible for Palau to jump to conclusions and make unfounded accusations and smears against China without valid evidence,” said the Chinese foreign ministry, as quoted by NYT.&nbsp;

However, on Tuesday Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, said she was not aware of the reports and that Beijing has “always opposed any form of cyberattack”.&nbsp;

According to the China National Space Administration (CNSA), the Chang'e-6 managed to endure high temperatures during its mission on the far side of the moon.

Unlike the previous Chang'e-5 mission, which collected samples from the moon's near side, Chang'e-6 operated under additional technical challenges — the probe had to operate without direct links to Earth.&nbsp;

Instead, it communicated through the Queqiao-2 satellite, launched in April to aid this mission.

Using a drill and a robotic arm, the Chang'e-6 probe collected soil from the moon's surface and just below it, as per reports from Xinhua, the state news agency.&nbsp;

The probe is now orbiting the moon and will soon connect with another spacecraft in orbit, said the CNSA. From there, the moon soil samples will be moved to a return module, and travel back to Earth.&nbsp;

As per reports, the landing is expected to happen in China's Inner Mongolia region around June 25.

Tiananmen Square anniversary: Tight security in China and Hong Kong; Taiwan says will never forget crackdown

China on Monday accused Britain's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) of recruiting a couple who worked for the central government to spy for the UK, adding to months of mutual espionage allegations between Beijing and Western powers.

The Ministry of State Security said in a post on its official WeChat that MI6 operatives convinced a man surnamed Wang, who worked in a "core confidential role" in the central state apparatus, to defect along with his wife, surnamed Zhou.

"Recently, after careful investigation, the national security organs uncovered a major espionage case in which the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) instigated a couple, Wang and Zhou, who were staff members of a central state agency of China, to defect," it said.

The ministry said British spies began cultivating Wang after he began a course of study in the UK in 2015, arranging dinners and tours for him in order to "understand his character weaknesses, interests and demands".

After learning that Wang "had a strong desire for money", they then approached him to provide well-paid consulting services that came to involve the internal workings of central state agencies, the ministry said.

MI6 personnel later revealed their identities to Wang and directed him to return to China to collect intelligence, convincing him to coerce Zhou into doing the same.

The ministry said it had gathered evidence and taken "decisive measures" against Wang, adding that the case was under further investigation.

The statement gave no details of Wang or Zhou's current occupations in China, the nature of the information they provided, or their whereabouts.

AFP has contacted Britain's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which handles MI6 press enquiries, for comment.

China and Western powers have long traded accusations of spying but only recently started to disclose details of alleged individual cases.

Last month, British police said Matthew Trickett, who had been charged with helping the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong to gather intelligence in the UK, had been found dead in unexplained circumstances.

And in April, German authorities arrested four people on suspicion of spying for China, in the same week that British police charged two men with passing sensitive information to Beijing between 2021 and last year.

The Ministry of State Security said in a post on its official WeChat that MI6 operatives convinced a man surnamed Wang, who worked in a "core confidential role" in the central state apparatus, to defect along with his wife, surnamed Zhou. "Recently, after careful investigation, the national security organs uncovered a major espionage case in which the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) instigated a couple, Wang and Zhou, who were staff members of a central state agency of China, to defect," it said. The ministry said British spies began cultivating Wang after he began a course of study in the UK in 2015, arranging dinners and tours for him in order to "understand his character weaknesses, interests and demands". After learning that Wang "had a strong desire for money", they then approached him to provide well-paid consulting services that came to involve the internal workings of central state agencies, the ministry said. MI6 personnel later revealed their identities to Wang and directed him to return to China to collect intelligence, convincing him to coerce Zhou into doing the same. The ministry said it had gathered evidence and taken "decisive measures" against Wang, adding that the case was under further investigation. The statement gave no details of Wang or Zhou's current occupations in China, the nature of the information they provided, or their whereabouts. AFP has contacted Britain's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which handles MI6 press enquiries, for comment. China and Western powers have long traded accusations of spying but only recently started to disclose details of alleged individual cases. Last month, British police said Matthew Trickett, who had been charged with helping the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong to gather intelligence in the UK, had been found dead in unexplained circumstances. And in April, German authorities arrested four people on suspicion of spying for China, in the same week that British police charged two men with passing sensitive information to Beijing between 2021 and last year.
