"This premeditated instigation of a trade conflict is naked economic terrorism, economic chauvinism, and economic bullying," Zhang said, stressing that China opposes the systematic use of sanctions, tariffs and protectionism.

"There is no winner in a trade war," he warned.

China has hit back with its own tariff increase on $60 billion in US products that will take effect Saturday, while state media has suggested that Beijing could stop exports of rare earths to the United States, depriving Washington of a key resource used to make hi-tech products.

Meanwhile, state media and officials have stepped up the rhetoric as the Communist Party digs in for what could be a long fight with the United States.

An anchor for the English-language state broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN) even held a rare debate on Thursday with a presenter from Fox Business Network to discuss the trade war after jousting on social media.

The debate between CGTN's Liu Xin and Fox Business's Trish Regan was civil, with the American journalist saying "I appreciate you being here" and the Chinese anchor inviting her to come to China, adding "I'll take you around".

But China's propaganda apparatus has hardened the tone.

The party's mouthpiece, The People's Daily, warned in an editorial on Wednesday that rare earths could be used as a counter-measure, adding that the US shouldn't "say we didn't warn you."

China produces more than 95 per cent of the world's rare earths, and the United States relies on the Asian superpower for upwards of 80 percent of its imports.

"It is unacceptable for any country to use rare earth products exported by China to curb and suppress China's development," commerce ministry spokesman Gao Feng said Thursday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asked about the rare earths threat during an interview, said that Americans have already "lost and suffered for decades under the current rules" and that Trump's "singular focus is to push back" on China.

He renewed his attack on Huawei, saying there was a "deep connectivity" between the company and the Chinese state.

"If it's the case that the Chinese Communist Party wanted to get information from technology that was in the possession of Huawei, it is almost certainly the case that Huawei would provide that to them," he told the Fox Business Network.

Huawei has rejected the accusations and on Tuesday filed a motion for summary judgment in a US court, hoping it would swiftly win a lawsuit against US legislation that bars federal agencies from using the company's equipment.

"You have seen that for some time, the US government has tried very hard to fabricate various topics, misleading the public in the US or in other countries of the international community, in order to suppress Huawei," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters.

Russia, China get closer

While Washington and Beijing spar, Xi is preparing to meet with President Vladimir Putin from June 5 to June 7 as the neighbouring giants forge closer ties.

"This trade conflict will also have a serious negative impact on the development and revival of the global economy," Zhang said.

China and Russia have broad consensus and common interests on the trade war issue, and the two countries will "certainly" strengthen their economic cooperation, Zhang said.

"We will certainly respond to various external challenges, do what we have to do, develop our economies, and constantly improve the living standards of our two peoples," he said.

US&nbsp;President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will likely make a deal with China on trade, adding that a lot of progress had been made to resolve the two countries' differences but warning that he still may impose more tariffs on Chinese goods.

"China very much wants to make a deal," Trump told reporters in Washington just hours after his top economic adviser expressed caution about talk of a possible US-China trade agreement.

"We've had a very good discussions with China, we're getting much closer to doing something," Trump said before departing the White House for a campaign event.

"I spoke with President Xi (Jinping) yesterday. They very much want to make a deal," Trump said.

"I think we'll make a deal with China, and I think it will be a very fair deal for everybody, but it will be a good deal for the United States."

Trump said he will discuss trade with Xi when the two meet for dinner on the sidelines of the G20 leaders' summit at the end of November in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

His administration has demanded that Beijing make sweeping changes to its policies on intellectual property protections, technology transfers, industrial subsidies and domestic market access, along with steps to reduce a US $375 billion US&nbsp;goods trade deficit with China.

Trump said a deal with China would also be good for Beijing.

"If we can open up China and make it fair, for the first time ever -- this should have done years ago by other presidents but it wasn't -- I am very much willing to do it. But China very much wants to make a deal," he said.

Trump's comments came a day after a phone call with Xi that he described as "very good.".

The president's remarks helped US&nbsp;stocks to trim their losses on a day that started with market optimism over a Bloomberg report quoting unnamed sources as saying that Trump had ordered his cabinet to draw up terms for a China trade deal.

The Rim of the Pacific exercise, known as RIMPAC and previously attended by China, is billed as the world's largest international maritime exercise and held every two years in Hawaii in June and July.

RIMPAC had enabled the armed forces of the world's two largest economies to directly engage with each other and had been viewed by both countries as a way to ease tensions and reduce the risk of miscalculation should they meet under less friendly circumstances. A three-member women&#39;s parliamentary delegation from Taiwan visited India earlier this week amid growing engagement between the two countries.

&quot;Such informal groups have visited India in the past as well for business, religious and tourist purposes. I understand that they do so to China as well,&quot; Swarup said.

&#39;Playing with fire&#39;

The Chinese media was more belligerent in its tone, saying India was &quot;playing with fire&quot; by playing Beijing over the Taiwan issue.

China&#39;s state media Global Times said India was standing out as a &quot;provocateur&quot; at a time when even Trump has soft-pedalled on the issue.

The editorial further stated: &quot;High-level visits between India and Taiwan are not very frequent, so why did India invite the Taiwan delegation to visit at this time?&quot;&nbsp;

It also accused New Delhi of deliberately trying to rile Beijing by raking up issues that are sensitive to the Chinese mainland.&nbsp;

The Taiwanese delegation&#39;s visit last week was the first one since pro-independence President Tsai Ing-wen swept to power last year.

Brothers in arms?

India and Taiwan have enjoyed a steady relationship over the years much to Beijing&#39;s chagrin.

Though diplomatic relations have mainly stayed off radar,&nbsp;Taiwan currently has Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre located in New Delhi. India&#39;s office in Taiwan is called India-Taipei Association.

Taiwan has been a hot potato for Beijing as it considers the country to be a part of the mainland.

Beijing&#39;s &#39;One China principle&#39; views Taiwan to be an inalienable part of a single China.

But its &#39;One-China policy&#39; is slightly different as Beijing states that countries having diplomatic relations with them must not engage with Republic of China, also known as Taiwan.

Recently, the United States bore the brunt of China&#39;s ire when Donald Trump became the US president to phone&nbsp;his Taiwanese counterpart since 1979.

In the 1970s, the US had decided to adhere to the &#39;One-China policy&#39; by closing its embassy in Taiwan.

Diplomatic relations between the two sides were skewered when Trump called up Tsai to congratulate his election win.

But days after hectic diplomatic jostling, Trump affirmed that the US would abide by the &#39;One-China policy&#39;.
