The Chinese president's remark comes as the Chinese coastguard reportedly fired water cannons at boats belonging to the Philippines, a move which was condemned by&nbsp;President Rodrigo Duterte.

Amid tensions with the Trump administration, China's foreign ministry said today that US arms sales to Taiwan violate the "One China" principle.

United States had earlier approved a potential $620 million upgrade package for missiles to Taiwan which included Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missiles.&nbsp;

On Thursday, Chinese defence minister Wei Fenghe had called up US defence secretary Mark Esper and asked US counterpart to "stop erroneous words and deeds and "avoid taking dangerous moves that may escalate the situation", China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

China had earlier reacted angrily to US announcement on sending health secretary Alex Azar to Taiwan, where he is due to meet President Tsai Ing-wen and other top officials.&nbsp;

China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin had said that it firmly "opposes" official exchanges between the US and Taiwan and urged the United States "to avoid seriously endangering Sino-US relations, as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

China claims Taiwan as a reneged province which has been ruled separately from the mainland since 1949. The Xi government has vowed to seize it by force if necessary. China has been regularly conducting military drills along the Taiwan Strait with reports of air space violation by Chinese fighters who have entered Taiwan's territory.

China threatened sanctions on US firms last year which were linked to a sale of warplanes to Taiwan calling the move "serious interference" in its internal affairs.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Saturday that unofficial communication channels with China remain in place, despite Beijing in June suspending contacts because the island&#39;s new leader would not endorse the concept of a &#39;One China&#39; principle. 
 
The Chinese government blamed the self-ruled island earlier this week for the breakdown of communications.&nbsp;China, which regards Taiwan as a renegade province, has been unsettled by Tsai, who took office in May, as she has been reluctant to disavow calls for formal independence. 
 
&quot;While the official mechanism of communication has not been restored, unofficial communication channels with the mainland remain available,&quot; she told reporters, without elaborating.&nbsp;&quot;We hope both sides maintain stability, so there won&rsquo;t be any misunderstanding or misjudgment on either side,&quot; she said. 
 
Tsai, who heads the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, reiterated she wanted to maintain the status quo in cross-strait relations, but said, &quot;there is no magic medicine&rdquo; to resolve the existing strains. 
 
China has insisted Tsai must recognise the &quot;1992 consensus&quot; reached between China&#39;s Communists and Taiwan&#39;s then-ruling Nationalists, the political basis for the one China principle,&nbsp;although each have their own interpretation of what that means. 
 
After the defeated Nationalist forces fled to Taiwan following a civil war with the Communists in 1949, China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
