<p>Ironically, most of the journalists who have been issued notice are those viewed as impartial voices and have in the past campaigned for the now incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa when he was being victimised under false assets beyond means charge by the Imran Khan government.</p>

<p>Article 19 of the Pakistani Constitution talks about the freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of the press. Every citizen of Pakistan has the right to hold opinions, the right to express them, and the right to speech.</p>

<p>Earlier, the caretaker government had formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) headed by the additional director-general of the Federal Investigation Agency’s Cyber Crime Wing and including&nbsp;representatives from the Intelligence Bureau, Inter-Services Intelligence, the deputy inspector-general of Islamabad police, a representative of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, and any other co-opted member.</p>

<p>JIT's terms of reference are to "determine the facts behind a malicious social media campaign attempting to tarnish the image of the honorable judges of the Supreme Court."</p>

Pakistan’s Federal Investigator summons journalists for sharing opinion on Chief Justice

<p>Even as Pakistan is mired in an economic crisis&nbsp;and struggles to stay afloat, its President Dr Arif Alvi has sought a massive increase in his monthly salary. In fact, not one, the president has sought two raises, first with effect from 1st July 2021 and the second with effect from 1st July 2023.</p>

<p>As of today, the president is entitled to have a monthly salary of $2800 (Pakistan Rupees 846,550). Dr Alvi wants it raised to $3360 (Rs 1,024,325) and $4034 (Rs 1,229,190) per month with effect from July 2021 and July 2023 respectively.</p>

<p>The President’s Secretariat earlier this month wrote a letter to the Secretary Cabinet through his Military Secretariat, demanding that desired amendments must be implemented. He sought an amendment in the Fourth Schedule of the President’s Salary Allowances and Privileges (Amendment) Act, 2018.</p>

<p>Upon receiving the request, the Secretary Cabinet forwarded the matter to the law ministry of Pakistan, which on August 18 advised the former to register the case and process a salary hike.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The finance ministry also examined the matter and, on August 22, endorsed the suggested salary raise for the president. This adjustment involves amending the Fourth Schedule of the President (Salary, Allowances &amp; Privileges) Act, 1975.</p>

<p>The next step involves presenting this matter to the cabinet for approval. Along with the proposed increases, the president is anticipated to receive substantial arrears due to two-step raises being applicable from July 2021 and July 2023 respectively.<br />

<p>"The Supreme Court of Pakistan is an independent institution as visualized by the founding fathers that in the State of Pakistan ‘independence of the judiciary shall be fully secured’. With such an objective in view, Article 191 was incorporated and the Supreme Court was kept out of the law-making authority of the Parliament."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the supporters believe that the passing of the bill was in line with what most bar associations had been demanding to free up the judicial process.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, that the bill has been returned, the parliamentarians will have to discuss it yet again in a joint session. If they send it back to the president for his assent, he will have 10 days to sign it. Failing to do so in the stipulated period will mean that the bill has passed.&nbsp;</p>

The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed has nominated Justice Ayesha A Malik for elevation to the Supreme Court in a historic step, reported Pakistani media. Justice Ayesha Malik will be the first woman judge in the history of Pakistan to be elevated to the Supreme Court. On September 9, a judicial commission hearing has been called to discuss her elevation to the Supreme Court. On August 17, Justice Mushir Alam will retire, and she is anticipated to succeed him. Since March 27, 2012, she has served as a judge on the Lahore High Court. She received her BCom from the Government College of Commerce and Economics in Karachi and studied law at the Pakistan College of Law in Lahore, according to her biography on the Lahore High Court's website. She earned her LLM from Harvard Law School, where she was a London H Gammon Fellow from 1999 to 1999. The mother of three children used to represent NGOs involved in poverty reduction, microfinance, and skills training on a pro bono basis. After 74 years, Pakistan is set to appoint its first female Supreme Court judge

<p>Justice Asif Saeed Khosa Friday took oath as the 26th Chief Justice of Pakistan in a simple ceremony held in Islamabad at the President's House which was also attended by foreign dignitaries, including from India.</p>

<p>President Arif Alvi administered oath to the new Chief Justice who took office after the retirement of Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Imran Khan, judges of higher courts, ministers, diplomats, civil and military officials, lawyers and foreign guests including from India were present at the oath-taking ceremony, the Dawn reported.</p>

<p>Former judge of the Supreme Court of India and President Governing Committee of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute Justice Madan Bhimarao Lokur and Sandra E Oxner, former judge and founding president Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, Canada took part in the ceremony, the report said.</p>

<p>They arrived through the Wagah border in Lahore on Thursday to attend the ceremony, it said.</p>

<p>Five senior judges of Turkey, South Africa and Nigeria also attended the oath taking ceremony.</p>

<p>Born in 1954 in Dera Ghazi Khan area of the Punjab province of Pakistan, Justice Khosa studied at the University of the Punjab and Cambridge University.</p>

<p>He started his practice as a lawyer in 1977 and was elevated as a high court judge in 1998. He was made judge of the Supreme Court in 2010.</p>

<p>Justice Khosa has decided around 50,000 cases in his long career. He was also part of the benches which disqualified former premiers Yusuf Raza Gilani and Nawaz Sharif.</p>

<p>He was also part of the three-member bench which acquitted Christian woman Asia Bibi in blasphemy case. The judgment triggered countrywide protest and violence by extremists.</p>

<p>Justice Khosa is very well read, having a vast study in different disciplines and often quotes foreign writers in his judgments.</p>

<p>Addressing the retiring ceremony of his predecessor Justice Nisar on Thursday, Justice Khosa said that he would like to decide the more than 1.9 million cases currently piled up in different courts by reforming the judicial system.</p>

<p>He also said that he would try to eliminate the practice of frivolous cases.</p>

<p>Supreme Court lawyer Ali Zafar said Justice Khosa was expected to focus on judicial issues unlike his predecessor who often interfered in issues of governance.</p>

<p>"The practice of suo motu will be rarely used by Justice Khosa as he believes that it should be only used when all other options have been exhausted to address an issues," Zafar said.&nbsp;</p>
