Díaz-Canel succeeds the brothers Fidel and Raúl Castro, making him the first non-Castro leader of Cuba since the revolution.

On March 27, 2023, Cuban authorities announced that voters elected all 470 legislators for the Caribbean island nation’s National Assembly.

Election officials announced the initial turnout to be 75.92 percent, topping participation in municipal elections in November and a referendum on the Cuban family code, which legalised gay marriage, in September 2023. Officials said that just over 90 percent of votes cast had been deemed valid, with 6.2 percent left blank and 3.5 percent annulled.

Cuba’s government does not allow opposition. Most parliamentary candidates are members of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).&nbsp;

Opposition groups, mostly based outside of Cuba, had encouraged voters to stay home in protest, saying the election had no meaning in a one-party system with no opposition.

The United States embassy in Cuba denounced the vote as "undemocratic", in which people were supposed to tick the names of any number of candidates or select "vote for all" option.

"The Cuban people deserve real choices in real elections that feature candidates from more than a single political party and beyond the Communist Party," the embassy wrote on Twitter on March 27, 2023.

The second term of President Díaz-Canel is expected to pass laws governing controversial issues including the regulation of the press, and the right to protest in Cuba.

Cuba's first non-Castro leader re-elected as president after 'undemocratic' election

The Bolivian soldier who was believed to have killed the famed revolutionary guerrilla Ernesto “Che” Guevara died at the age of 80.

Mario Terán was part of a military group that captured the Argentinian-born revolutionary in 1967.

According to reports, Teran shot dead Argentina-born Guevara on October 9 in the eastern Santa Cruz province of Bolivia during the cold war.

After the retirement, Teran lived in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and had been hospitalised for the past three weeks. On Thursday, he succumbed to a long-term illness.

He is survived by his two children and his wife.

Speaking to AFP, Gary Prado, who is a former Bolivian soldier and also who helped capture Guevara 54 years ago, said, "He died. He was ill and nothing could be done."

Guevara was an Argentinian physician and a cult figure for many youths who are inclined towards the Left.

He was the leading figure in the Cuban revolution that helped Fidel Castro topple the dictator Fulgencio Batista.

After serving as a senior official in Cuba’s government for several years, he set off to try to lead other insurrections – with far less success – in Africa and then in South America.

His small band was finally tracked down by Bolivian soldiers in 1967 when he was trying to overthrow the government there.

Terán was then ordered to kill the already wounded Guevara, then 39.

Teran later told reporters, "It was the worst moment of my life."

"I saw Che was large, very large. His eyes shone intensely. I felt him coming over me and when he fixed his gaze on me, it made me dizzy. "

"‘Calm yourself,’ he told me, ‘and aim well! You are going to kill a man! ’ Then I took a step back toward the door, closed my eyes and fired. "

Guevara rose to become a key figure in the revolution and was&nbsp;appointed as president of the National Bank of Cuba and minister of the industry. He guided the Castro government towards closer links with the Soviet Union through his diplomacy, which proved to be a crucial relationship for Cuba throughout the Cold War. He, however, left Cuba in order to spread Marxist revolt elsewhere.

He arrived in the Congo in 1965 and attempted to mobilise armed rebels forces there against the Congolese central government. His efforts failed within seven months.&nbsp;

Che shifted his attention towards Bolivia after Cuba and started a&nbsp;revolutionary movement against the government there. However, less than a year later he was captured by US-backed Bolivian forces on October 8. He was executed the next day at the age of 39.

His death

According to several media reports, Che&#39;s death remains one of the most carefully carried out operations by the US-backed Bolivian forces. It is believed that&nbsp;F&eacute;lix Rodr&iacute;guez, a Cuban exile turned CIA Special Activities Division operative, advised Bolivian troops during the hunt for Guevara in Bolivia.

According to&nbsp;2007 documentary titled &quot;My Enemy&#39;s Enemy,&quot; it is alleged that&nbsp;Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie advised and possibly helped the CIA orchestrate Che&#39;s capture.&nbsp;

One day prior to his planned killing, an informant told the Bolivian Special Forces of the location of Che&#39;s guerrilla encampment in the Yuro ravine. On the morning of October 8, the personnel encircled the entire site with 1800 soldiers. Che was reportedly wounded and taken prisoner. He had then apparently shouted:&nbsp;&quot;Do not shoot! I am Che Guevara and I am worth more to you alive than dead.&quot;

On the evening of the same day, he was tied and taken to a mud schoolhouse in the nearby village of&nbsp;La Higuera. Che was then interrogated for the next half day.&nbsp;

Che was then shot through his right calf and questioned some more. It was only when he wouldn&#39;t answer, was he finally executed on the morning of October 9. Reportedly,&nbsp;Bolivian President Ren&eacute; Barrientos ordered that Guevara should&nbsp;be killed.&nbsp;

Until a long time after the killing, it was not revealed whether his remains had been buried or cremated.&nbsp;The hands were preserved in formaldehyde to be sent to Buenos Aires for fingerprint identification. They were later sent to Cuba.

In July 1997, a team of Cuban geologists and Argentine forensic anthropologists discovered the remnants of seven bodies in two mass graves, including one man with amputated hands.
