The crown of the Queen has 2,800 diamonds. It also features a large stone, which was given to Queen Victoria by the Sultan of Turkey in 1856 as a gesture of gratitude for support of the British during the Crimean War. &nbsp;&nbsp;

‘Spencer’ review: Kristen Stewart is hauntingly beautiful as People’s Princess, Diana

A slice of cake from the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer sold for £1,850 ($2,558) at auction in Britain on Wednesday -- with a warning not to eat it.

The 40-year-old slab of marzipan and thick white icing decorated with the royal coat of arms fetched more than three times its asking price of £300 to £500.

"We were amazed at the numbers of people wanting to bid on this large and unique piece of royal cake icing," said auctioneer Chris Albury, a royal memorabilia specialist at Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Cirencester, western England.

"There were lots of enquiries from bidders, mostly in the UK, the USA and several countries in the Middle East," he added in an email.

The successful bidder was named in British media as Gerry Layton from Leeds in the north of England.&nbsp;

"I have always been a monarchist and I had been to see the wedding dress at Kensington Palace," said Layton.

"I thought I would like to add it to my estate, which will be going to charity after my death.

"I will have to think of a way to stop myself from trying to eat it though," he joked.

The cake was originally given to Moyra Smith, who worked for Queen Elizabeth II's mother at her Clarence House residence in central London.

Following Smith's death, her family sold it at the same auction house in 2008 for £1,000 to a private collector, who has now sold it at a profit.

"It appears to be in exactly the same good condition as when originally sold, but we advise against eating it," the auctioneers said.

- 'Handle with care' -

The cake remains as Smith kept it, wrapped in cling film in a cake tin that she labelled "Handle with care" and dated 29 July 1981, the day of the wedding.&nbsp;

The auctioneers said the slice came from a multi-tier cake served to staff at Clarence House, where Smith worked in the kitchen.

Apart from the main wedding cake, there were around 22 other cakes supplied by manufacturers for the royal occasion, the auctioneers said.

Wednesday's lot included order of service and ceremonial programmes for the wedding, a royal wedding breakfast menu and a table seating programme from Buckingham Palace.

Pieces of Charles and Diana's wedding cake still regularly go on sale and interest remains strong despite the break-up of their marriage and divorce in 1996.&nbsp;

Lee had invited O’Connor to audition based on a photograph. “I liked his ears a lot,” he said. But the tape O’Connor sent was worrisome.

“God’s Own Country” earned O’Connor a British Independent Film Award for best actor in 2017. Two years later, he won another for “Only You,” about a couple struggling with infertility.

Rather, “I was drawn to his sensitivity and the fact that he was complex but likable, and I just felt instantly intrigued,” Morgan said. “And the minute he started doing some readings for us, it was a no-brainer. He was a list of one.”

“What Peter does is he strips all that back,” he said. “It’s about humans who struggle and have very odd relationships with their parents and power and politics. That’s the juice.

“But I think you can have those beliefs and have great respect and affection and love even for these people. I think the queen is an extraordinary woman. Time after time, lots of men have failed, and this one woman in power has been consistent and remained dutiful and generally apolitical.

“In that sense, I have huge respect for her — and for Charles, to be honest. I mean, Charles is another level of someone who’s literally been waiting his entire life for this moment that still hasn’t come.”

"The idea, somehow, that I`m going to go on in exactly the same way, if I have to succeed, is complete nonsense because the two - the two situations - are completely different," he told the BBC. 
 
Asked whether his public campaigning will continue, he said: "No, it won`t. I`m not that stupid." 
 
Britain has a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch has a formal role in the formation of governments but an obligation to remain neutral and no practical political power. 
 
Charles has been outspoken on topics such as the environment and social issues. In September Charles said in an interview with GQ magazine in September that "My problem is I find there are too many things that need doing or battling on behalf of." 
 
But he told the BBC that he would operate within "constitutional parameters" as king. 
 
"I do realise that it is a separate exercise being sovereign. So, of course, I understand entirely how that should operate," he said. 
 
But he defended his activism as heir to the throne, which includes founding the Prince`s Trust charity in 1976 to support vulnerable young people. 
 
He said: "If it`s meddling to worry about the inner cities as I did 40 years ago, then if that`s meddling I`m proud of it." 
 
Charles was four when his grandfather George VI died and his mother ascended to the throne at the age of 25.&nbsp;
