Kenya’s Charles Matata delivered a record-breaking performance to win the men’s elite title at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2026 on Sunday, clocking 58 minutes and 52 seconds to rewrite the course record. However, the Kenyan runner believes his achievement is only another step towards what he can accomplish in the future. Matata bettered the previous course record of 58:53, set by Ethiopia’s Amedework Walelegn in 2020, by one second. His performance also marked a personal best in the half marathon, capping an impressive outing on the streets of the national capital. Speaking after his victory, Matata revealed that he had arrived in Delhi well prepared, having maintained his fitness following his previous racing commitments in Riga. The Kenyan was familiar with the course, having finished second at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2023, and believed he could improve on his earlier performance. “I was not expecting to break the course record, but I was expecting to run 59:20. Because today’s weather was very good, and the course I knew because I was here in 2023, I had a very strong mind that maybe I would run my personal best,” Matata said.
‘No human is limited’: Matata eyes more sub-59-minute runs
For Matata, the course record is not a reason to slow down. The Kenyan believes consistent training, patience and the willingness to push his limits can help him achieve more in the coming races. Asked whether he expects to run more half marathons in the 58-minute range, Matata was emphatic about his ambitions. “I believe so because no human is limited, and I am ready,” he said. The runner credited his training routine and the competitive environment within his group for helping him develop the confidence to aim higher. He also pointed to the influence of his brother, Alex Matata, who won the men's elite title at the 2025 edition of the Delhi Half Marathon. “If someone like Kiplimo can run 56-something, why not me?” Matata said, referring to the performances at the top end of men's half-marathon running. Also Read: Kenya's Charles Matata sets course record as Wudinesh Alemu wins women's tile at Delhi Half Marathon; Ankita smashes personal best
How Matata approached his solo charge
One of the defining moments of Matata’s race came when he moved to the front after approximately eight kilometres and continued to lead for the remainder of the contest. If we have patience and they are not so strong, and we are strong, we decide to just move on,” he explained. For Matata, the objective is not limited to setting records. The emphasis is on maintaining the discipline required to compete for the top positions. “If we are focusing on being a winner, not only to break the course record, but being a winner, you have to focus, and you have to aim to become top three,” he said. He added that he and his brother follow a similar approach during training in Kenya, continuing to push themselves even when others in their group struggle to maintain the pace. “That is our slogan, because even my brother, he does the same as me,” Matata said.
A possible Matata double act in Delhi?
Alex Matata’s victory in 2025 and Charles Matata’s record-breaking triumph in 2026 have given the family consecutive men's elite titles at the Delhi Half Marathon. The prospect of both brothers competing in the same race in the future is one that Charles is keen to explore. Reflecting on the possibility, he suggested that he and his brother had already discussed the idea of returning together, hinting that a future appearance could be on the cards.

He also had a family legacy to uphold. His twin brother, Alex Matata, won the 2025 Delhi Half Marathon in 59:50. Favourable weather and an early-morning start helped the elite men maintain a blistering pace. Pacer Emmanuel Yegon led the field through the opening 5K in 13:56, putting the runners on course for a potential record. Drawing on his experience, Charles gradually separated himself from the chasing pack, which included Ethiopia’s two-time champion Birhanu Legese. I was hoping to run in the 59-minute range, but the excellent weather and my familiarity with the course from 2023 helped me deliver an even stronger performance and set a course record. I believe no human is limited, and I am ready to push myself further.” Reflecting on his return to competitive running after an injury, Samwel said, “My comeback was not easy, as I suffered an injury in February that forced me to cancel several races and a marathon. I am grateful to have returned strongly and finished on the podium,”
Wudinesh Alemu stuns favourites to win women’s title
Ethiopia’s Wudinesh Alemu Keneni produced an impressive performance to win the women’s title, despite having limited experience in half-marathon racing. Before arriving in Delhi, the teenager had competed in just one half marathon. Primarily a track athlete, she finished third at the Oysho Cardiff Half Marathon last year in 1:08:08. Kenya’s Irine Cheptai took the initiative early, leading her compatriots through the first 5K in 15:55. Alemu remained in the leading group before making her decisive move during the final quarter of the race. Cynthia Chepkwony, Selah Busienei and Cheptai stayed within striking distance, trailing the Ethiopian by approximately 50 metres as the race entered its closing stages. I ran a strong race from the start and maintained my pace throughout. This is only my second international half marathon, and I have improved my personal best by almost two minutes, which makes me very happy,” She also spoke about her ambitions and the experience she hopes to gain in the coming years. “I have been running for only two years, so I am still learning and developing as an athlete. I hope to continue improving, gain more experience and build a strong career in distance running,”
Shailesh Kushwaha dominates in men’s Indian elite race
Twenty-year-old Shailesh Kushwaha won the Indian Elite men’s title in 1:05:05 after a closely fought contest. He broke away from a five-man leading group shortly after halfway and maintained his advantage to finish six seconds ahead of Gaurav Mathur, who clocked 1:05:11. Hemant Singh completed the podium in third place with a time of 1:05:37. Kushwaha was determined to deliver a strong performance following disappointment at the 65th National Open Athletics Championships 2026. “I wasn’t happy with how I did at the 65th National Open Athletics Championships 2026, so I was eager to give this run my absolute best. It’s tough to find the confidence to break early and lead for most of the race, but today I was able to do it. I definitely felt the pressure because Gaurav was right behind me all the way to the end.”
Ankita Dhyani dominates women’s Indian elite race
Ankita Dhyani, a World University Games silver medallist in the steeplechase, delivered an outstanding performance to win the Indian Elite women’s title in 1:12:46. If Indian women focus more on the half marathon, we’ll soon see the national record broken. I’m very happy that all three of us on the podium are from Uttarakhand. The state supports us a lot, and we are happy with the achievement,”
