He witnessed the solar eclipse of Aug. 5 in 1766 while conducting astronomical observations and thus named the place Eclipse Island. "If we get 30 to 40 people show up here just for the eclipse, I will be ecstatic," Michael Ward, the manager of Burgeo townhall told Reuters. The 8-foot (2.4 metres) tall beacon, built in the 1950s-60s by community members will be restored by the people of Burgeo, home to about 1,100 residents. The solar eclipse, the first of its kind since 1979 in Canada, is creating a carnival atmosphere and many have been making travel plans for months. In Niagara, local government has declared a state of emergency with a record more than a million people expected to converge along the majestic falls and the popular tourist destination. People will come together to sing songs, rebuild the beacon, and engage in traditional smudging rituals and drumming to honor indigenous culture and heritage. "We want everybody (the local residents) to be involved... It's going to be quite a show," Ward added. On April 8, the complete solar eclipse is expected to traverse Mexico, the United States, and Canada in the sky over North America, according to NASA. Meanwhile, former monarch Queen Victoria's statue was smeared with red paint.&nbsp;

Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan condemned the attack and said this sort of "vandalism" did not have a place in Australian society.&nbsp;

“We will be working with the council to repair and reinstate the statue in St Kilda that has been vandalised overnight," said Allan.&nbsp;

Opposition leader&nbsp;John Pesutto also stood in Allan's corner and called the incident "unacceptable".&nbsp;

“There’s no place for acts of vandalism or any other violent acts against people or property in our community.&nbsp;We support the right of people to protest and demonstrate but it must always be done in a peaceful and respectful way."

Notably, this is not the first instance when the Captain Cook statue has been vandalised on the eve of Australia Day. In 2018, pink paint was dumped on the statue.&nbsp;

“We should have an Australia Day, but we can probably find a more appropriate day to celebrate it. Once you start realising Jan 26 and why it is chosen, Australia Day is meant to be a celebration of everything Australia and our history. [So] we could choose a better date," said Cummins.&nbsp;

Cricket Australia&nbsp;dropped the term “Australia Day” from marketing in 2021, when some Big Bash League teams wore Indigenous strips for games played on 26 January.

Former England captain Micheal Vaughan had set the tone of the tour quite early by cautioning his fellow Englishmen of an impending whitewash on Indian soil if they don&rsquo;t improve with the bat.&nbsp;

Bangladesh expedition was a perfect round-up for the English ahead of India but all they managed was a tense victory in the first Test and an equally tense and dramatic loss in the second and the final test. 1-1 read the scorecard.&nbsp;

The optimists can still derive contentment from a drawn overseas series amid tough sub-continent conditions and spin-friendly tracks, but if you are the skipper of a team which is touring India next, the smiles would drown no sooner than you read the names - Ravichanran Ashwin &amp; Ravindran Jadeja - on sports pages.&nbsp;

Much of the English hopes, Cook will have to carry on his own shoulders along with Joe Root &amp; Ben Stokes - England&rsquo;s new poster boy. &nbsp;
