Experts expressed optimism towards China's capital market as the country opens the market to global investors more and more in recent years.

China has been accelerating in opening up its financial market to overseas investment, with B-share, systems of Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFII) and Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (RQFII), Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect, and Shanghai-London Stock Connect came into being.

The State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) Tuesday announced it would abolish the investment quota restrictions for QFII and RQFII to boost financial reforms and opening-up.

Ted Niggli, head of the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Index Business in Asia Pacific, has been in China for seven years. MSCI set up its office in China as early as 2004.

He said there are three reasons for China to become an attractive investment destination for global investors.

"The investors being interested, the regulatory framework enhancing at a fast pace and the companies themselves changing, these are three important catalysts for us to believe that over time, China will be a strong destination of investments from investors around the world," said Niggli.

With MSCI, FTSE Russell, Standard and Poor's and Dow Jones entering the Chinese market and increasing the weight of the yuan-denominated A-shares in their indexes, the Chinese capital market is connecting closely with the global market.

Qian Jun, dean of Fanhai International School of Finance with Fudan University, said overseas investors will boost the healthy development of the stock market.

"Overseas institutional investors, particularly long-term institutional investors, follow the so-called rational value investment most. Their acts will promote the stock market to develop more healthily," said Qian.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission published 12 important goals of deepening the reform of the capital market on Tuesday, showing that China is speeding up in reforming its capital market in the future.

Zhang Wangjun, deputy director of the Marketing Department of the Commission, said they will take concrete actions to push forward the reform.

"We will pay attention to the general goal of forging a normative, transparent, open, vigorous and resilient capital market and take concrete actions to implement financial supply-side structural reform to better serve the overall situation of high-quality development of the economy," said Zhang.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) withdrew over Rs 5,300 crore from the Indian capital markets in January, indicating their 'wait and watch' approach ahead of the general elections.

Prior to this, they had infused a net sum of over Rs 17,000 crore in the capital markets — equity and debt — during November and December 2018. In October, they had pulled out a massive Rs 38,900 crore.

According to data available with the depositories, FPIs pulled out a net amount of Rs 5,264 crore from equities and Rs 97 crore from the debt markets last month, taking the total outflow to Rs 5,361 crore.

"Investors are taking a cautious approach given their focus on global headwinds and upcoming general election," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd.

It has not been a good start of the year with regards to FPI flows and clearly, they are continuing with their cautious or 'wait and watch' stance towards India, which they have been maintaining for a long time, said Himanshu Srivastava, Senior Analyst Manager Research at Morningstar Investment Adviser India.

He further said the focus would continue to be on economic growth and the general elections.

Other factors such as movement in crude prices and currency, which would have a bearing on the country's macro-environment, and worries over global trade war will continue to guide the direction of FPI flows, Srivastava added.

Echoing the views, Alok Agarwala, Senior VP and Head Investment Analytics at Bajaj Capital, said FPI flows would continue to be volatile in the coming months.

"The outflows could continue further with escalating trade disputes. The domestic macroeconomic concerns viz, weakness in currency, movement of crude oil prices, trade deficit would also weigh on inflows," he said.

"As a base case scenario, we could expect overall net flows to turn marginally positive in case external conditions improve in the next few months as one of the factors, that is oil prices, corrected sharply in last few months," he added.

Market experts believe that FPIs are continuing with their 'wait and watch' approach towards India.

Going ahead, the focus would be on the budget, progress on the economic growth front and general elections, they added.

Other factors such as movement in crude prices and currency as well as <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/no-breakthrough-in-us-china-trade-talks-trump-adviser-191392">US-China trade relations</a> will also play a role in FPI flows, they added.

Harsh Jain, COO at Groww, an online MF investment platform, said 2019 is likely to see a lot of volatility because of the rate hikes and dollar instability, but the Indian markets may be able to weather the storm.

"India offers better investment opportunities due to consistent growth, supportive global factors and attract valuations. We should expect positive inflow in coming months," he added.&nbsp;

According to data available with the depositories, FPIs infused a net amount of Rs 1,332 crore in equities and Rs 2,552 crore in the debt markets, taking the total to Rs 3,884 crore during December 3-21.

Marketmen attributed the inflow to persistent fall in crude oil prices, which dropped to over 15-month lows, and strengthening rupee against the dollar.

However, till December 7, FPIs were net sellers in the equity market, pulling out funds to the tune of Rs 383 crore. However, they had put in Rs 2,744 crore in the debt markets during the period under review.

"The sell-off was triggered on December 6, when FPIs sold net assets worth Rs 361 crore in a single day. This could be largely attributed to the weakness in the global markets due to the arrest of a high-profile Chinese executive which led to a sharp fall in the stock markets globally," said Himanshu Srivastava, Senior Analyst Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Adviser India.

"Investors fear that the relationship between the world's two biggest economies — US and China — could deteriorate following the arrest and hurt economic growth. Consequently, they chose to adopt a cautious stance and shun risky assets, such as their investments in emerging markets like India, which are more susceptible to weak global cues," he added.

The sell-off by FPIs was triggered after Chinese telecom giant Huawei's CFO <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/huawei-cfo-meng-wanzhou-freed-on-bail-leaves-courthouse-183504">Meng Wanzhou</a>, who is also the company founder's daughter, was arrested in Canada for extradition to the US for suspected Iran sanctions violations.

The rupee recovered from a near 18-month low by rising 12 paise to 68.30 against the dollar in opening trade today at the forex market on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters and banks.

The minutes from the US Federal Reserve's meeting yesterday appeared to have reassured investors that the central bank will not be too aggressive with raising interest rates, forex dealers said.

Besides selling of the American currency by exporters and banks, weakness in the dollar against some other currencies overseas propped the rupee, they said.

Further, a higher opening in the domestic equity market too influenced the rupee uptrend, they added.

Yesterday, the rupee had lost 38 paise to hit a near 18-month low of 68.42 against the US dollar following relentless capital outflows amid concerns over macro conditions and surging crude oil prices.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 119.56 points, or 0.34 percent, to 34,464.47 in early trade today.
