<p>The Thai PM also said that there will be no compromise regarding cannabis' recreational use, as the drug use has been "widespread lately."</p>

<p>Some tourist operators have welcomed the move towards a change in law, and say that loose industry regulations have caused problems like marijuana overdose.</p>

<h2><strong>Decriminalised narcotic</strong></h2>

<p>Thailand is the first Asian nation to decriminalise cannabis. In many Asian countries, the use and possession of cannabis carries heavy penalties and jail time.</p>

<p>Last year, in June, the nation delisted parts of the marijuana plant as a narcotic. The move was undertaken by the former coalition government.</p>

<p>This, as per the Guardian, led to a boom of cannabis cafés and weed dispensaries in popular tourist destinations like Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Bangkok.</p>

<p>However, the new Prime Minister Thavisin doesn't agree with the move.</p>

<p>"I don't support the recreational use of cannabis... only its use for medicinal purposes," Thavisin told local media last week.</p>

<p>"If this problem spreads in society, it may cause wider narcotic drug problems," he said in an interview with Thai outlet The Standard.</p>

<p>However, he vowed that for the benefit of the people, he would find a middle ground.</p>

<p>Currently, in Thailand, people older than 20 years of age are legally allowed to use cannabis within their residences. Additionally, food containing cannabis extracts can be consumed within licensed restaurant premises. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women are not allowed to consume cannabis or its products.</p>

Thailand PM vows to change law that allows recreational use of cannabis

<p>Global financial payment-major Mastercard said that companies must stop individuals in the United States from buying legal marijuana using&nbsp;their debit cards.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Marijuana remains legal for medical use in 38 of the 50 states in the US. It is also legal for adults over 21 years old to buy for recreational use in 23 states, including Washington DC and the entire US West Coast. But federally, the largely recreational drug remains illegal.&nbsp;<br />

Mastercard said that it implemented the move after some shops were found to be accepting debit payments while a federal ban remained in place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As we were made aware of this matter, we quickly investigated it. In accordance with our policies, we instructed the financial institutions that offer payment services to cannabis merchants and connect them to Mastercard to terminate the activity," Mastercard said in a statement on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Industry insiders have decried the move as a blow to the industry.</p>

<p>Sunburn Cannabis CEO Brady Cobb said in a statement that "this move is another blow to the state-legal cannabis industry and patients/consumers who want to access this budding category."</p>

<p>Pot firm Verano's President, Darren Weiss, said, "We will continue to advocate for cannabis reform in Washington through further dialogue with elected officials and stakeholders to advance conversations supporting the growth of safe, legal cannabis across the US."</p>

<p>Customers are forced to pay for marijuana in cash in 38 states where marijuana remains legal.</p>

<p>“The cannabis plant is very complex and contains a large number of cannabinoids and other compounds,” she said. “The two most prominent cannabinoids are CBD, which is cannabidiol, and THC, which is the one that makes you high when you smoke a joint."</p>

<p>CBD may also be useful for the treatment of cancer-related symptoms not examined in the study, she said, such as insomnia. Despite the lack of evidence of benefit, 36 per cent of the study participants decided to buy a medicinal cannabis product after the trial.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hardy said it may be that CBD contributes to a greater feeling of general wellbeing, even if it did not improve specific symptoms.</p>
